Aston Villa vs Manchester United [13/Nov/2010]

We have a great record at Villa Park, it'd be typical if we fecked it up there now that their team is struggling a bit. It's imperative that we win this to stay hot on Chelsea's heels.

if we can't beat a team with a midfield of Clarke, Bannan and Albrighton - we cant be expected to take the league

They are all really talented players - but come on ... they have what ? 30 league matches between them ?

Park should be reested for Obertan and i would like to see 451

Losing the experience of Petrov and Reo-Coker aside there are still other midfielders they could call upon but this shows how much Steven Ireland has around 150 appearances (6 Villa Starts), Moustapha Salifou around 60 appearances (4 Villa starts) and Fabian Delph has 54 appearances (8 Villa starts) are valued by Houlier. Though I think Delph may also be injured.

Bannon 5 Villa games, Albrighton 10 Villa games, Clarke 5 Villa games

Though Bannon has another 30 games in Championship (between two clubs), so that's at least 50 appearances with 70% of them belonging to Bannon. The other two don't really have much exposure to other games but youth international football.

Well Chelsea didn't beat it.

Well Chelsea didn't beat it.

Midfield then was Young-Ireland-Reo Coker-Petrov-Downing, very rich in experience with coming on Sidwell off the bench though Clark did come on for Dunne and played centre back for 77 minutes.

Reo-Coker, Petrov and Sidwell are out injured. I just wonder if Houlier will risk Ireland for this game, in theory they could play Delfouneso upfront with Agbonlahor, and go four in midfield.

Aston Villa are likely to have eight first-team squad members unavailable for tomorrow's Barclays Premier League clash with Manchester United.

Carlos Cuellar has definitely been ruled out with a calf injury suffered ahead of the midweek win over Blackpool while fellow defender Habib Beye is also struggling after twisting his ankle in the warm-up against the Tangerines.

Stiliyan Petrov, Nigel Reo-Coker, John Carew, Emile Heskey, Steve Sidwell and Fabian Delph are out, while striker Gabriel Agbonlahor could come into the starting line-up after making his comeback from groin surgery as a substitute against Blackpool.

Team (from): Friedel, Luke Young, Collins, Dunne, Warnock, Albrighton, Clark, Bannan, Downing, Ashley Young, Delfouneso, Guzan, Ireland, Agbonlahor, Lichaj, Lowry, Hogg, Johnson, Beye.

When did Fabian Delph become a first teamer?

All joking aside it does look like the squad is hit, if Clark does start and Beye isn't fit it leaves only the likes of Eric Lichaj, Shane Lowry to come into defence for a straight swap.

What happened to Isaiah Osbourne that he's missing from the squad?

whats wrong with ireland ?

 how long have you got?

You'd think Stephen Ireland would get the nod over Barry Bannon for a big game like this, but Houlier dropped him for his poor attitude:

Aston Villa: Gerard Houllier insists Stephen Ireland has improved after stinging criticism - Aston Villa FC news - Aston Villa - Sport - Birmingham Mail

Ireland must be prepared to play wherever he is needed with Houllier adding: “Some players say ‘I can’t play that’, but you can’t take a player like that now.

“But then they will play right-back for the national team even if they are a left-winger. You need a player who is ready to sacrifice for the team. That means sometimes you prefer them in a different role.

“Sometimes you have to work an extra yard with extra effort. You win things only with people who are at a level where they put the effort in for the team.”

You can see why he's having problems trying to make Ireland understand him.

He has handed in a transfer request! Hasnt become public knowledge yet, but expected to leave alongside Carew in Jan.

Ahem...

Has there been a presser for today's game from our side? Can't find any news updates on possibilities of Giggsy returning or confirmation that Evra would be out (even if that may be a fib in the way SAF works).

I think Evra will be out with his ankle injury, saying otherwise is wishful thinking.

Apparently Fergie has re-banned the press, for making huge headlines out of something he said ahead of the derby (Poster thing, I think). Should be updates abou the team any time now on the website, though...

no words on Giggs and Evra?

and also when Rooney will return?

I was holding out vain hope of Rafael being fit seeing as it was only a dead leg, I had no hope of Evra playing at all.

evra trained , fat bastard back at carrington on monday
nothing on giggs .. apparently was due back in training last monday, so should be available

the city game was always going to be too soon

From official site:

Optimistic for Pat
One of United's main casualties from the midweek derby is in contention to face Aston Villa this weekend.

Patrice Evra limped off the pitch at Eastlands due to an ankle injury but he has since trained with the squad and the Reds are hopeful the left-back will start the Saturday lunch-time match at Villa Park.

However, Rafael is still suffering from the dead leg he sustained against Manchester City and will be assessed before Sir Alex Ferguson announces his side to take on Gerard Houllier's men.

Wayne Rooney will again be absent as he travels back from a training week in the US but he'll return to work at Carrington on Monday.

So villa are without their first choice midfield Petrov/Reo Coker/Sidwell, plus Heskey, Carew, Cuellar, with doubts over a couple of others, they about as fecked as we are by the sounds of it, although looks as though they'll have their first choice forwards all fit typically.

Really dont know what to make of our pre match presser, we must be the only club in the world who leaves us more unsure about the team than before the bloody thing.

It will be a very tough match. Their young players are very good. Bannan and Delfouneso in particular. Although I am unsure whether Agbonlahor or Delfouneso will start.

I doubt Park is going to start this game because he has already played 3 in 8 days and he is already out of gas, so he can't play 4 in 11 days.

If Giggs is fit, then for sure he is going to start or else Obertan will start. Plus Obertan needs to play more if he is going to get better, so I would play him more in these kinda important and tough games.
