Aston Villa vs. Manchester United

Getting caught by a counter attack was frustrating, our midfielders were just strolling back and the goal should have been prevented despite Smalling collapsing in a heap after diving in. You can see Villa countering more and more now they have something to hold on to.

Scholes made two very bad errors which could have led to goals, and for that it has to go down as a poor half.

Other than that he's been the hub of the team, everything goes through him, he is always available, he always wants the ball, he gets it and uses it to create space. Yes often he's played it simple - that's what good CMs do for the most part. Other times he's played good long balls out to the wings. He hasn't set the game alight but you can't just blame him for our performance, half our players have been shite.

I wouldn't play Scholes in a 2 because we're vulnerable on the counter, and in a 2 with Carrick we lack pace and dynamism. But he's still run the game.

That's the problem really. When Scholes plays he becomes a liability defensively and our whole style is altered for everything to go through him and it leads to a very slow and static kind of football especially when you pair him with Carrick (a pretty static player anyway). I'm sure there will be games it will work well but more often than not of late it's become a real issue.

Basically Scholes and Carrick don't have enough legs in midfield for me. You can call it controlling if you like but I didn't see any penetrattion in our play because our two CM's can barely move.

A basic explanation of how we're playing.

Toothless.

Good I couldn't possibly have dealt with another 45 minutes of Young checking back.

Hopefully we get Ando/Cleverley on soon if the pattern of our play doesn't change.

Absolutely wank performance from Young. Hasn't had a good one in forever it seems like. Probably need to go back to last season in the 8-2 against the gooners?

When was last time Scholes-Carrick worked well for us in midfield ?

Well we've dominated the ball and had it in plenty of dangerous areas with bodies in the box, can't help if the two players chiefly responsible for putting in the final ball have offered no real attacking threat.

Hernandez on, with scholes/carrick sitting deep and neither young/valencia getting into the box it left rooney/RVP double marked. One thing with sticking welbeck out there is that he drifted centrally and opened lanes for the other two.

heres hoping we havent dug ourselves too deep a hole.

I hope this is yet another comeback win. Its getting bloody tiring watching us have to crawl back from deficits all the time. We aren't winning the league if this continues.

Well I pretty much agree with that.

I'd never start Scholes or Giggs in a 2 myself, but I'm never disappointed to see them in a 3.

We still need Scholes off to get some dynamism in the middle. Now we just have 3 isolated players instead of 2. Or Carrick off, Im more a fan of Carrick than Scholes and we definitely will have less defensive cover if Carrick goes off instead of Scholes. But Villa are dire offensively anyway and we NEED something to change in the midfield. Ando or Cleverley on please.

He hasn't had a sniff. Only getting it when he comes deep.

But even when he has his control has been off. Not being critical per se, just unusual seeing him look anything less than 100%.
