Bailly and Lindelof

One is pure madman whilst other one has zero anticipation when it comes to heading and was the sole culprit for their goal.

Bailly shit the bed today. Massive shame. He was excellent in what was an easy game for him but what a ridiculous red card to get (and there was no disputing it). That was his chance to stamp down his place and he let the team down needlessly and gave OGS reason to question his worth. Absolute fool. He could have made a case to start every game for the rest of the season, now he’s back to square one.

The fact that Bournemouth have little aerial presence and the defence still looked exposed is shocking.

Neither are good enough for us.
Smalling is our no1. He's no vanDyke but he'll do. If we could get Maguire beside him and keep Jones as a back up I for one would be happy.

Every ball lobbed into our box makes me hold my breath. We need a matured, strong CB.

You seriously can't play Bailly in CL knockout matches. The guy might knockout his own team.

None of them can head the ball properly or brave enough to dominate in the air.

At least you can bet Jones would put his head everywhere on the pitch.

Also Bailly kept passing to Lindelof instead of making a pass for himself often which slowed things down a bit.

Yeah I feel the same. I really like Bailly and I think there's a top CB in there, but low on confidence + predisposition to rash challenges is making for a bad combination.

It is just amazing how top club can have 5 central defenders and neither of them is complete. What a crazy bunch.

Give Baily more time and I'm still hopeful he will come good. I remember he started very well at the club and I was impressed with him. Jose manage to turn even Pogba, Martial and Sanchez to shit.

For Lindelof, apart from his passing, I really can't see anything special with him as a CB. Having said that, for now my first choice is still Smalling and Lindelof. However, I hope Jones and Baily can find their form soon and form a strong partnership as both of them have higher ceiling.

Bailly needs to watch hours and hours of Rio playing for us and realise that you barely need to tackle at centre back let alone sliding tackles on the half way line. You can block all you like but tackling is seldom needed.

I am not against rash challenge if he is taking one for the team when there is clear and present danger. But this was sheer brainfart, and not the first time. He needs more than just time. A shrink may be.

After X amount of years and Y amount of players you can still make a case that Valencia, Smalling, Jones and Young is our best back 4.

Bailly isn't fit to lace Rio's boots let alone gain his understanding of the game.

And if he did lace his boots he'd probably try to do it with his teeth and a jackhammer.

Disagree with you there. The shocking thing is that it’s not as far off as it should be but our best back 4 is clearly:

Young - Smalling - Lindelof - Shaw

Bailly is good when playing a high line against a counter attacking team. Only problem is that Lindelof is best and most effective playing as the right sided CB. Smalling nor Bailly is good enough, which leaves Jones. Rojo is extremely rash and unreliable to partner with Lindelof on the left. Nobody in their right mind can rely on Jones staying fit or play without making a calamitous action that wipes out every teammate

Agreed. Lindelof's lack of aerial ability is a concern but much less of one when he's paired with Smalling, who has the best defensive credentials at the club. On paper Lindelof-Bailly seems exciting but neither of them seem to be able to turn in a complete 90 minutes without someone holding their hand. You can tell why Jose wanted to add a proper commanding centre back, it's a worry how little leadership and composure we have back there.

all 5 defenders are average, and each of them would be much better under a wc CB. Remember when rio played with evans, or Vidic with jones, or Rio with smalling. The defence was still very good.

in Baillys defence how satisfying is it to completely clean out an opponent

he's great natural strength and pace..... all he needs to do is focus on staying on his feet

Lindelof is a good defender but as Ole said in his post-match he's more of a cultured European defender or...in other words....he's not built for a cold Tuesday night in Stoke when the balls are coming in high

still plenty of time to develop though

true and you only need to look at the impact VVD made on that Liverpool defence

Lindelof will turn out to be a very good, if not a great CB. Bailly is just another Jones/Rojo, mostly injured, crazy and not that great in the first place.

Assuming no injuries, Smalling and Lindelof must clearly be our main partnership in defense. Until we sign a defender or two. I wouldn't be unhappy if I won't ever see the other three playing for United in the future.

This is why I'm so glad Woodward didn't give Jose anymore money to spend, the guy has left us with more problems than solutions. Why did he buy two CBs that have the same weaknesses?

He can come good. Like many defenders before him,he has one rash challenge in him per game

He could easily have been sent off for that high foot earlier on if the ref had seen it. He likes to put it about.

That said, he's the defender with the most potential for me. If he can stop with the stupid.

Well then we have to ask questions of the scouts and recruitment team. Jose is the one who tried to sign a dominant CB this summer just gone. When he spoke about Diop he praised the West Ham scouts for finding someone who won everything in he air. When he spoke about signings he said he wasn't a scout but understood the Portuguese market and so was aware of Lindelof and Dalot.

The recruitment was bad before Jose arrived. There is a problem there.

One is passive, the other is too aggressive and rash, and both are poor on the air. I think I'd take Smalling and Jones over them anyday.

I am seeing an improvement in Lindelof. He has reasonable footballing skills, is quick and can pass.
But, he is still far from being a good defender. Either his concentration or reading of the game is lacking and he gets caught out of position.

As for Bailly, he really needs quite a bit of coaching from a proper defensive coach in order to prevent his risky challenges.

By now I would have expected both to be quite a lot better than they currently are.

Lindelöf has got better but it worried me a bit yesterday the way he hacked the ball away barely under any pressure and pretty much took Shaw out in the process. I'd expect that level of defender for the five a side team I play for not in a side at the highest level.

Lindelof has grown on me, at the start thought he had no chance but love the way he brings the ball out from defence and his reading of the game is improving hugely, just not a massive presence at set pieces.

Bailly is just so rash, should have given a pen away, red card, flies into tackles without thinking, seriously needs to cut that out of his game as he has all the attributes but he has that mistake in him, bit like Jones and Smalling, they can be class for 85 minutes but you always feel there is a mistake waiting to happen!

He panicked far too much for what should have been a very easy game - we weren't troubled in the air, and we defended well otherwise. His passing was so pedestrian.

Someone just needs to tell Bailly that the Mou has really left the building...

That phrase makes me think of Pique's struggles here before becoming a world beater almost immediately upon returning to Barcelona.

You just can't play these 2 together. If they played against the u14s you would still worry about them in the air from set pieces.

Jones should be the first one out the door, his injury record is atrocious. It makes no sense he is still at this club.
I think if Bailly had a seasoned CB to pair with, he would calm down and his play would vastly improve.

We need a leader at the back and neither Bailly nor Lindelof is that.

Lindelof should be kept around. Bailly needs to go, with Rojo and Jones.

Bring in 1xCB and bring back Axel.
