Balkan Discussion

Balkan is great, our neighbours can't hide their racist background even during the biggest sporting event in the world, far away in Russia. Few things that happened already:

- Croatian manager talking in post match interview about their fallen soldiers from homeland war/attributing them their victory
- in the same interview talking how Croatia is their only country, despite no one even asking him about that, and in general talking about some random thing after a victory during sporting event. What's funny about all this is that he is born in Bosnia.
- Serbian fans wearing shirts with pictures of war generals/convicted war criminals
- Serbian manager comparing VAR technology with court in Hague
- Swiss' players that are born here and their goal celebrations that have nothing to do with Switzerland and are basically celebrating Kosovo

Probably some other things that I missed.

Bosnian fans wouldn't be any better either if we were in Russia I am sure. Altough, what is worrying is that players/managers are using racist rethoric too, so you can't expect fans to behave any better.

Last year I read a whole host of books about the Yugoslav wars and all the conflicts of the 90s, plus some more general history books on the region and the Balkan Wars of previous centuries. Also watched a fair few documentaries. I must admit, it's hard for an outsider like me I think to properly comprehend it all, interesting to read about the background to it all, but also very sad to see the tragedies that occurred when the trouble erupted as Yugoslavia broke up and the people were manipulated by some of the politicians and leaders of the time. To say the least.
When Yugoslavia was breaking up in the 90s and it was all covered in the UK media, I thought I had a pretty good basic idea of what was going on but with practically every book I read on the subject I realised that my understanding of it all was far from complete and probably still is.
When I say I found it all a very interesting subject, I don't mean in any way to trivialise all the wars and tragedies that occurred, I am referring more to the history of the region which shaped the various parts of what became Yugoslavia. Even now reading about it, it's hard to actually believe that some of the particularly horrific events of that period did actually happen.

11th of July, every year, is Srebrenica memorial day, today marks 25 year from the Genocide. Another 9 new found (part of) bodies will be burried today. Biggest genocide of our generation, all while rest of the Europe were watching. :(

In other news, Bosnian Serbs in the middle of Bosnia and Herzegovina have schools named by war criminals, Student dorms named Radovan Karadzic, a horrible man responsible and convicted for genocide, crimes against humanity, etc., and Serbian people are completely fine with that, even Serbian president is standard guest at these ceremonies etc., all while EU high representive serving in Bosnia are watching them continue to do that.

Interesting developments between Kosovo and Serbia today. While the real reason for this deal was for Trump to get in TV and proclaim a diplomatic victory, I think it is a pretty decent deal for both sides, that opens the road for a final solution.

Also, Kosovo becomes the first country with a Muslim majority that opens its embassy in Jerusalem. And Trump seems to think that Kosovo is in the middle-East.

Not the phrase I would use.

Good news, though.

What do you mean?

News are kinda ok. Politically, not much will happen, economically Serbia wins (though Kosovo wins too if they manage to actually build an economy in the first place), and both countries stop spending resources on bullshit (Kosovo on getting accepted in UNESCO etc which they don't have the votes in the first place, Serbia from convincing third-world countries to withdraw Kosovo's recognition that has no effect at all).

The Israel deal is kinda weird though. Serbia actually voted against Israel several times (including on that UN resolution after US moved the embassy), and now are becoming the first European country to open the embassy in Jerusalem. Israel is also finally recognizing Kosovo (quite weirdly, this took longer than anyone expected knowing the good Israeli-Albanian relation and of course Israel-US relations), with Kosovo in turn becoming the first country with a Muslim majority to open the embassy in Jerusalem.

And for whatever reasons, there were a couple of points against Hezbollah (who have no presence in either country) and for 5G (essentially, don't use Huawei's 5G). Priorities, I guess.

I think you can use google translate to read the article, but Vucic's picture with Trump is amazing, like a school boy in front of a teacher

He also bragged how he got special pen from Trump that only he uses for signing and of course social media mocked him immediately:

https://www.telegram.hr/zivot/a-jad...-koji-doslovno-svima-gura-penkale-u-ruke/amp/

He deserves every bit of mocking because he is such a liar, and how he controls 90% of Serbian media to write positive about him, and actually to lie for him all the time. He is worse than Erdogan regarding media democracy.

Curious about how the rest of balkan countries see the recent dispute between Greece and Turkey. Do they media even cover it?

Of course they do, we are not in Australia, even if they don't, we have world news. But it's not any more important for us than news in some other European countries anyway, IMO.

Comedy continues.

Tweets are in English so it's easier for others who don't understand it.
This is hilarious. Seems that Vucic was going to sign anything except recognizing Kosovo.

To be fair, to me it looked a brave step from him. The article in 5G (essentially banning Huawei’s 5G) is quite interesting, the Chinese won’t be happy at all with Vucic (whom not long ago called China’s president brother and tried to speak some Chinese).

Cover like in other countries, but it ain’t a big deal for any other country in Balkan. If the worst happen, the other countries will watch.

They cover it, some of the worries here in Serbia is that this will ignite new disputes about land or resources in our region as well. Very common that a political situation in one area can spark similar problems in another.

So, some news from Balkan(Bosnia mainly):

https://balkaninsight.com/2021/07/23/bosnias-high-representative-imposes-genocide-denial-ban/

This was pretty huge few weeks ago, and Serbs were pretty upset by it, and it was a really good move by Inzko, altough late for about 10 years I'd say.

In other news, Serbian politicans continue to upset the people talking about new wars. Vucic is calm and talks friendly a lot, even shared many vaccines with us Bosnians, but yet his friends around him are continuing racist narrative, and he refuses to calm them down, which probably means he is telling them what to talk, so it doesn't come directly from his mouth. Leader of course is Milorad Dodik, Bosnian Serb member of our presidency, who even denied to meet with new european high representative. He is already on American blacklist and continues to spout shit publicly about American and EU ambassadors and representatives, I wonder how long they will continue to hold it.

Croatia is also continuing their racist policy towards Bosnia, but yet the EU has stopped everything they have asked on the last EU Balkan meeting.

US and EU showed lot of support for Bosnia lately, even Biden is good hope for Bosnia, considering he knows the situation very well, only problem is Russia that is left supporting Serbian racism towards us.

Regarding Bosnians politicians, I'd say mine(muslims) are probably the biggest culprits for all this, they are the least racist but also the most incompetent and maybe the most corrupted.

And also this:
https://balkaninsight.com/2021/08/09/football-fans-disrupt-match-in-serbia-with-srebrenica-chants/

That's second incident in just few days, completely random and for no reason, I have no idea what kind of idiot goes to a random game and glorifies a genocide that happened 15 years ago.

Anyway, bit under the weather today, and bored in the house, so wanted to write few updates.

Bosnia is in danger of breaking up, warns top international official
Exclusive: high representative says threat by Serb separatists to create their own army risks return of conflict

The international community’s chief representative in Bosnia has warned that the country is in imminent danger of breaking apart, and there is a “very real” prospect of a return to conflict.
In a report to the UN seen by the Guardian, Christian Schmidt, the high representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, said that if Serb separatists carry out their threat to recreate their own army, splitting the national armed forces in two, more international peacekeepers would have to be sent back in to stop the slide towards a new war.

Fecks sake :( it's really going to happen again isn't it?
With Vucic becoming the King of Serbia, it looks increasingly likely to have new conflicts in Bosna (if Srbska Republica tries to go independence) or Kosovo (if Serbia invades the North of Kosovo).

Don't think Serbia will be invading anything soon. Most people still remember what happened last time.

Right when I was set to visit Bosnia next year.

But honestly, how can anyone think of instigating violence given what has happened in the past.

You only need to see comments by anyone with a Serbian flag in their name on twitter to see why. A lot of them flat out deny there was any wrong doing still (Not all Serbians of course).

I understand twitter, but you'd think the nations at least wanna move up the ladder of life and economy than fight again.

I doubt we are anyhwere near close to a war because no one wants it.

Serb member of presidency Dodik is literally the only person provoking for a war because his seat is shaken. He is a nutjob who has around 40 companies in the country, so I doubt the war is in his interest either. But with help of Vucic - Serbian president who is portraying himself as calm influence in the region despite people around him(his right hand) provoking things all the time, you never know.

Europe and USA are helpful in their support of peace, but also their solution to many problems here are contradictory and very stupid, they just make the situation and differences between the people even worse, which in the end makes you question their intentions. Their last suggestion to voting process was ridiculous, it's like saying you want to stop racism but are for adding "white" or "black" before person's name in their passport.

Instead of banning corrupt and nationalist politicians and thier parties they are supporting them by inviting them every week to discuss problems with them every week, when everyone knows the biggest problem are those politicans themselves who are fixing laws so they can stay there forever.

Scary scenes today. Glorifying convicted war criminals, inviting them as VIP's to their ceremonies, genocide denial & glorification and taunting chanting in support of the vile monsters behind all the atrocities. Just disgusting. Just hope that it doesn't progress into war (or genocide mk2), but feels like it's on the edge. Wonder when I'll actually go back and if I'll have the chance to see my grandparents again at this point :(

Where do your grandparents live?
It seems like there were several occurences like this predominantly held in towns with a Muslim majority like Novi Pazar.

That country will never have peace. And kill me if I understand why.. I mean, I know why because it was just boiling and never rest in peace. But it is a mark of humanity and what little means to most people there.

God bless (from Croatia, I know we have our burden there and am sorry). But please not another war.

You’ve unintentionally answered your own question there. It comes down to religion…a twisted, deranged, psychopathic view of religion of course.

From what I can make out, most of the songs sung were regarding Kosovo.

I simply cannot understand how these people operate.

A few days ago, friend's wife had her phone stolen and went to the police. She got told that they can track it down unless the thief threw the battery away but if they can track it down and it is in Kosovo, there is nothing they can do.

Both her and her husband were shocked to hear that the Serbian police has no control over Kosovo. In 2022.

It's a feckin expression. ffs

I know, sorry, there was no need for me to be a dick about it. It is absolutely all things you mention but I find it hard to unpick those from religion in some way regarding Serbian nationalism in Bosnia.

Do you have any links? I find it hard to believe something like this could happen in Novi Pazar with no civil war starting.

Nah, all fine. I also wanted to say it was just an expression... But, in a way, you are right nationalism and blind, stupid religion go hand to hand.

The thing is there are people in Balkan who don't want to see Bosnia suffer again. That is my massage from a neighbouring country.

Just read it on twitter.
Then, I did a search and could not find anything, really!

Sorry, it might have been fake news then!
