Banks vs. Schmeichel

Yashin is generally regarded as the best ever - as that poll shows. Don't forget about Jennings, many rated him higher than Banks.

I never saw Banks play but I can't believe that 2 of the Arsenal fans have the audacity to mention Seaman in this thread.

Haha Seaman maybe one of the top keepers but his last Euro tournament still comes to mind when it was pretty much his blame that we ended up losing to France...

What are you on about? Seaman's last Euro was 2000 when we didn't play France. If you mean 2004 v France then David Beckham missed a penalty, Steven Gerrard played a suicidal backpass in the last minute and David James brought Henry down for their pen.

I apologize greatly for my error!!! I mixed things up in my head, I was talking about Seaman when we played Brazil in the WC and was off position during Rondaldinho's freekick and yes with the French game I was talking about James... Very sorry for my mix up! So I change my statement to sub out the French statement and add in the Brazilian one (and national games there after)... Very tired :boring: I need to reread my posts...

Seaman was a fine keeper. I'm an England supporter so anti-Arsenal bias (which I do hold) doesn't apply. But he simply isn't in the same league as Schmeichel for me, as has probably been gathered!

Spoony, if asked who I thought the best keeper of the 80's was, I'd probably have named Southall is this makes you feel better :)

Southall may have been good in the 1980s but he was pathetically bad in the 1990's, all he ever did was moan and shake his head. Far too fat and moustachioed to be a goalie in the 90s.

Old enough to have seen football over the decades and therefore qualified to make a valid judgement. Jennings was quality and with Banks, Shilton, Clemence, Stepney and Bonetti all around at that time the late 60's early
70's was a golden age for keepers.

I'd definitely put Cech up there mind.

Very well said.
