News media are reporting it as a contract until the end of the season with an extra one year option.

Oddly enough this appointment seems a sensible one atm. Should imagine there aren't too many other managers wandering around loose who would be prepared to work under Abram, plus Chelsea have a £50 million asset sitting there which is of limited use and little re-sale value because no-one can get it's engine going. Rafa might be just the mechanic they need to start that engine up again and get it firing on all cylinders.
 
I have no idea why I am waiting for his press conference live on the internet. Too much time I have.

Barrett may know a thing or two about the inner workings of LFC but Chelsea official statement read "Rafael Benitez has been appointed interim first-team manager until the end of the season."

You wonder what Abramovic must be thinking now. We know his goal was to win the Champions League, but it's clear he's not happy with just that. It seems he never wanted to just win it. He wanted a dominant Chelsea side who could win it and claim to be the very best in the world; a side that was feared by others.

In the end, they limped to a Champions League win and it will go down as one of the biggest flukes of all time. It seems clear that he never wanted to simply win the Champions League. There was a lot more to it than that.
 
I give it two weeks until all the Chelsea fans adore him.

To be fair he was winning the Spanish League before the fans heard Chelsea existed.
 
He's just indicated he was sacked prematurely at Inter as he'd just won the CWC. :lol:

I was actually very surprised as well. I wouldn't think any top manager will accept Roman's "stop leak" offer.
 
It shows how desperate the Fat One was to get a job at a half decent club.2 years of updating a blog telling all the fawning dippers what he had for breakfast made him only to willing grab the Chelsea offer with both chubby hands.After Inter threw him out he must have thought the offers would come flooding in but apart from Slimfast this is it.12 months warming the manager's seat for someone else.

At the rate that club is sinking cash into a burning tar pit to achieve what they can and spin a dollar it is no wonder. Looking at our early CL exit and drop in revenue would be enough to give them a huge kick in the nuts financially.

Chelsea are really well placed for a shot at the league title this season. That's down really to the amount of expensive, quality players they have in their squad. & if their supporters are totally honest with themselves, they'll see that RDM wasn't up to the job of manager at a club who's owner has such high standards & expectations. Which in fairness, he's entitled to do so considering the amount of money he's ploughed into the club. Chelsea supporters need to be very careful however if they intend to focus all their time & energy on venting their respective spleens on a new manager simply on the basis that they don't like him. What's it going to achieve ? Nothing positive that's for sure. Abramovich isn't going to take any notice. He'll continue to do what he wants to do, regardless of any noise coming from the stands. Whereas any chance of winning the title this season could evaporate quicker than an ice cube in a sauna if the fans don't get behind their team as opposed to voicing their displeasure at a man who has replaced another manager who was clearly not fit for purpose - This could well be a great example of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Rafa Benitez failing because the supporters want him to fail.

Sir Alex Ferguson: Rafael Benitez lucky over Chelsea job timing

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has replaced Roberto Di Matteo at Chelsea at a fortunate time

Benitez won the World Club Cup with Inter soon after taking over from Jose Mourinho and could to do so again when Chelsea play in the event next month.

"Rafael Benitez is very lucky," Ferguson said.

"On his CV in two weeks he could have two world championships and nothing to do with the construction of the teams."

Di Matteo was sacked after only eight months in charge at Chelsea, having won the Champions League and FA Cup.

"Everyone feels for Roberto Di Matteo and quite rightly," Ferguson said. "It's quite amazing that you win the FA Cup and the Champions League [and lose your job]."

Benitez, 52, who was involved in several disputes with Ferguson during his spell at Anfield from 2004-2010, won the Italian Super Cup and Club World Cup during a six-month reign at Inter but was sacked in December 2010 and has not been in a managerial post since.

The Spaniard's new team are still involved in five competitions and are currently third in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Manchester City.

They travel to Japan for a World Club Cup semi-final on 13 December with the final three days later.
