Berbatov | Fulham player

Fergie has explained the reasons (if they needed explaining) behind keeping him and giving him the extra year and you've still got people saying it makes no sense to keep him.

I agree that we need 4 top class strikers. The thing I don't agree with is that Berbatov fits the bill. He makes reference to Sheringham/Solskjaer as in 1999; but both of these players were top class coming off the bench, which is a quality that is essential for a striker in Berbatov's position.

It is all well and good saying we have the best 4th choice striker in world football, but if he is totally ineffective in this role then we may as well have a promising/eager youngster with potential.

Told you so (you being a number of people but mostly Fagg).

I never ruled him out staying or going since the last window shut. I was unsure on how they would approach the extra year, but I stated plenty of times I would be completely shocked if they allowed him to leave for free. So you told me nothing to be fair.

Others have suggested the contract will be signed for the extra year and then we sell him right away. And if he is to leave that would be by far the best idea, unless he was to go in January via a silly offer from the Russian side.

I would still rule nothing out at all. If he stays next year which again I have said was a possibility I did also point out he may find he has even less opportunities than he has had this season.

If you are happy seeing a player like Berbatov used in CL group stage and Carling Cup for another year. Fair play.

But again I have stated that for the next 10 weeks he has an amazing chance to put himself back in favour with the games coming up.

So it really is a case of wait and see what happens.

But Randall said that Berbatov had a poor attitude, that Fergie is really an idiot sometimes!

Never once have I suggested Fergie is an idiot. I do believe that Berbatov at times has a bad demeanour when on the pitch. Obviously I have no clue what he is like behind the scenes.

But one thing is for sure Fergie would never speak badly about one of his players to the press. Thank Christ for that, as it would be extremely poor form if he did.

I think when Fergie says he'll get his game time as the season wears on he means starts.

I don't believe there is such a thing as 3rd or 4th choice, it's just squad rotation in my opinion.

I reckon if Fergie receives a 20m from Anzhi in January, he will drive Berbatov personally to the airport. And that sum of money can be re-invested in that transfer window if Fergie has a couple of targets in mind

I don't think Berbatov's demeanor changes behind the scenes to what we see on the field. Even the recent interview he comes off as someone who just doesn't care. I doubt when he is training he suddenly changes to a guy that is all laughs and giving 150%. As supporters we take what we see on the field as something really bad / horrible / disgusting / shameful. The manager and his teammates though my guess would be see it as that is just the way he carries himself and know the outward appearance doesn't really represent his desire/ability.

As for Fergie not speaking poorly about his players - well yeah but, that doesn't mean he has to talk them up either. Which he has often done in Berbatov's case.

What you've done there is made a bet I can't be bothered to trawl through all the bile you've spouted in this thread in order to prove this exact statement incorrect, well played sir.

Spot on. Fergie never speaks poorly of his players, but he'll never give a player undue praise over and over again for no reason, however I'm not sure some people will be willing to accept it here. I feel for such deluded idiots.

I am not ruling anything out, so you don’t need to feel for me. Football never ceases to surprise me

Delusion is those who felt he would become a great Manchester Utd player. I feel for them. Because that looks a long way off

And repeating myself yet again. He has a fantastic oppertunity over the next couple of months to force Fergie to play him. If he manages to find his form from last season he will deserve his chance.

Yeah but it's more important to have a striker who can regularly play 90 minutes for us in case others get injured. Remember last year? Where was Owen then?

No way will Berbatov start less than 10 games this season.

When is he ever fit though? Berbatov plays more games than him.

Excluding Carling Cup and FA Cup which are reserve competitions for a large part, Berbatov won't start more than 10 games. I don't think he has started a league game until now, has he?

Honestly I have asked the question on each scenario; stay, go in Jan or go in the Summer. I have never stated any to be fact since the window shut

Did I think he would leave last summer? Yes I did.

He has, at Stoke. His one and only start in the league. He might get five or six more, and probably one more in Champions League and that's it if you ask me. He will start most of League Cup and FA Cup games but he's not worth keeping for that fact alone.

Looking at today's game thought he should be in the starting considering the amount of creativity he brings to the game which we lack form midfield.

Instead of who? our MOM Carrick? or the guy who created our only goal (Giggs)? or the guy who scored the goal, the only guy we have who scores those kind of goals consistently?

Aside from getting the errant pass for the goal, Giggs was quite poor today and it's sad you use that one play as justification as to why he at least at this time deserves to start of Berbatov. Not that it's like Berba is going to replace one of the CM directly anyway. If he were to come into the team, he either replaces Chicha or Rooney drops into CM.

During the game I was thinking during today's game that goodness Chicha offers so little at times with his constant running offside and lack of control at times and inability to beat people 1 on 1 but, boy does he justify his place in that he pops up with those goals.

We know Chicha is a livewire when he comes off the bench and might not be too bad if Berba does start a few games to give us a little more creativity from our CF.

I've never cared much for Berbatov but I no longer can be bothered with the whole saga as such, he'll stay as back up for one more season I guess, no biggie.

Well that's my point, Berba isn't a midfielder, and nor is Rooney so we should stop trying to ruin the lad by playing him there. Rooney's form at the start of the season was brilliant, but moving him around the pitch hasn't helped him at all.

Should Berba start over Hernandez? Well the only thing I can say about that is, Hernandez won us yet another 3 points away from home yesterday.

The 2 bolded sections just emphasize my point really, it's tough to find a place for him. For me our biggest problem right now is the attacking form of Rooney and Nani, that's why we're not creating so much. If Berba is to get into the team anywhere then it should probably be for one of these 2, but would that make us any better right now? tough to know. What I'm certain of is that we'll be miles better off with an on form Rooney and Nani in the team.

Berbatov should really cease being a topic of debate really. He is back up and quality back up and that's how it will remain.

Those wanting to see him be first choice again ain't gonna see it happen. Not when he is now officially Rooney cover, after Welbeck proved he can impersonate Chicharito real well and lead the line.

Have a lot of time for him but yeah, agree with this.

I just stated in the Rooney thread that I'd like to see Berbatov start in the hole with Rooney up top.

We seemed to have ironed out the defensive problems lately but as a result we are looking toothless going forward.

Time for a tweak I say. I think Berbatov is more effective when he is involved and gets the ball.

Rooney showed that he has great positional discipline playing up top when he was heading in goals for fun 2 seasons ago.

Just a thought.

We tried that pretty often too that same season.

Starts a big game today, it seems SAF still has faith in last year's golden boot winner.

Yeah, he's a big fan of Tevez. :D

My first thought - surprisingly - was to be pleased for him, rather than pleased we'd equalised. That came pretty soon after mind, but he needed that.

Quality performance so far, plus he timed the run perfectly for that Carrick pass and the incompetent linesman flagged incorrectly.

Thought we were in for a true Berbatouch(c) treat there near the end, he just lost the sight of the ball though. Excellent game from him so far, perfect header!
