Berbatov | Fulham player

One that very few would have predicted this time 3 years ago.

When he signed did you see him as a back up or a vital member of the the 1st team?

What does that have to do with anything? We assess the situation as of now, not the thoughts of the fans three years ago.

agreed, but thats not what I want or am looking for. I think the last 6 months is more than enough evidance that Berbatov has not worked out the way many thought he would

And the 6 months before that was all the evidence you need to see why he was signed in the first place. Mad, eh?

And the situation now is:

we played our best football last season after Hernandez displaced him from the starting line-up. This has continued into this season where Berbatov seems to have now fallen behind both Hernandez and Welbeck.

But I don't think anyone will grumble about having a £30 million pound footballer as talented as Berba on the bench or as an option, it's outrageous really.

Yes and no, those 6 months were blown out of all proportion but all in our we'd have been absolutely delighted if he'd shown that form during his entire time here. But 6 great months in 3 seasons isn't what most of hoped when we broke our transfer record for him.

But as I said, it's outrageous having an option like him in the squad, almost looking like a 3rd choice. Everyone has to be happy with that.

Hernandez did well but, our better football came with Rooney finally being Rooney. People say Chicha brought the best out in Rooney but, as we can see at the start of this season, it's just plain Rooney being a happy/mentally/physically sound Rooney.

Also, we had Valencia come and play very well, Giggs moved off the wing and finally gave us a CM that was a little more deft in the middle.

When Rooney is on form, he can play some devastating football with Berba - the Blackburrn game, Rooney didn't score but, he played some brilliant football and the result was 5 for Berba. I'd love to see Berba get a shot playing along side Rooney and the rest of the team when they are playing at this pace. I don't think he'd slow it down one bit because he's as good with the one touch passing in around the box as anyone we have.

Berba has been here for 3 seasons pal.

Or was Rooney not "Rooney" for anything other than those months he played with Hernandez

I appreciate your efforts. I still think it is a very surprising situation.

You keep moving the goalposts...or are just adamant in your attempts for everyone to see Berbatov in a negative light. No, he hasn't worked out as we hoped. I don't know why you'd need anyone to confirm that.

Imagine hating one of our own players so passionately. I don't get it.

true

great option to have as long as he isn't the one doing the grumbling

Spot on. There's a myth doing the rounds that Rooney only came good when he was paired with Hernandez. Rooney himself just confirmed that he turned the corner long before then. He said the game against WBA was when he started to get back to his best.

Credit where it's due, Hernandez got some crucial goals and earned his run in the team on merit but it's nonsense to credit him with being responsible for Rooney getting back to his best. Welbeck's a very different player to Hernandez and Rooney's arguably looked even better still when playing alongside Danny. I've absolutely no doubt his current form will continue when Berbatov is back in the team.

Does Hernandez bring out the best in Rooney? Does his runs create space for Rooney - I would say yes. Would I say the same for Berba - no. Does it mean Rooney plays better with Hernandez than Berba - I would say depends on the opposition.

What I like about the way we are playing is that we don't have any static players - everyone can end up in any position- Rooney out wide, Welbeck wide left, Young down the middle as the attacks develop - this makes it hard for the defence to pick up the players.

Only playing with the team will we see what impact or effect Berba will have - I am sure SAF has been toying around with tactics and formations in training and thus far he has come up with this dynamic play whether it continues is anyones guess but if Berba was tearing it up in training wouldn't you think SAF would have played him more?

I dont hate him. I just dont get the love for him at all. That is the only thing that has annoyed me.

Some (not all) speak of him like he is one of the greatest players ever to grace OT.

Its an opinion I dont agree with.

I don't think Berba's the best partner for him, 3 seasons have surely proven this to us?

I am sure that Rooney will continue to play well though, but ultimately Rooney is better off partnered with Hernandez or Welbeck, that much I'm certain of.

Cracking post Commadus.

Whenever in the past I have said he has been a disappointment I get a whole bunch of ridiculous stats thrown at me which apparently prove he was fantastic for his 1st 2 seasons.

We won't know for sure until Berbatov gets his chance to play alongside an in-form Rooney for a run of games. Let's wait and see, eh?

Know the feeling.

I guess we should say "fair play" to them for supporting a player all the way, but it's frustrating getting no sense of realism from certain posters.

The problem is that you guys point it out all the fecking time, and after every bad game (and every game he doesn't play in), as if he was the worst player we've ever had, and jump on his back for absolutely everything. It gets very tiresome and annoying. He hasn't worked out the way we'd all hoped, but to say he's been poor is just nonsense.

No, you don't seem to understand why people like him, or want him here.

It's also not really about that. The majority of your posts aren't about people who love him, but negative slants on Berbatov. That's the reality.

That's certainly true with some people, not all though.

Exactly, and I can't wait to see it. Rooney has been in much better form then any of his past recent seasons, I'm sure anyone who pairs with him is going to see a better partnership then they did before.

I'm not sure why some his last six months were such a disappointment - He was hardly played!! How on earth is he supposed to shine from the bench ?

For some people it's because they expect our record signing to be one of the first names on the team sheet, anything less is "disappointing".

For others it's because we finally started playing great football without him in the team.

And some just don't like him, or his style I guess.

How long has berba been here Pogue? He didn't sign last season, he's had plenty of chance to play alongside an in-form Rooney for a run of games.

Not really. He got dropped after the FA semi (in which Rooney didn't play) and didn't get a look in after that, thanks to Hernandez doing so well. He played a few games alongside Rooney while he was beginning to hit form (and did very well) but that's it. Thanks to Hernandez (and now Welbeck) doing so well Berbatov hasn't had any of the benefit of Rooney's return to his brilliant best that our other strikers have.

You might know the feeling, but he doesn't. Look at his posts in this thread, how many of them are to do with people who love Berbatov, and how many are just random negative posts on the player.

Rooney is in better form than 2 seasons ago when he was touted as a contender for EPOTY? Short memory Hectic?

Yes, he is in much better form, and my memory is obviously better then yours. Rooney was far more clinical two seasons ago, but he wasn't a better player then he is now, not by a long shot.

You're not getting it Pogue. Berba was partnered often with Rooney 2 seasons ago when Rooney was in top form.

Cut the shit. You despise him. Bumping threads when he doesn't start. You enjoy it.

And I have never seen anyone talk like that. Feel free to show some examples.

My thoughts on Rooney Sharky, and I stand by them, he is a much better player now then he was two seasons ago. Without question.

I'm sure he will have his best season with us, he's looking like a better player than he ever has for us in the past. Like the perfect mix between when he burst on the scene for us, and the experienced Wayne two seasons ago. I think he's still a long way away from the likes of the freaks, but I can't get over how comfortable he has started to look, it's become a rarity for him to lose possession in a half these days, and the ease in which he is drifting past players, it frustrates me it's taken him this long! At times in the past he's gone through spells where he can't run past a defender, or successfully take them on. Now he's doing exactly what Scholes does, but his acceleration is far superior so instead of just working the extra yard of two or space to work a pass, he can turn it into a forwards movement and drift past players as if they are nothing, his strength is obviously a huge factor in this as well.

This is the best we've seen him play I'm sure of it, his hunger for the ball, the shots he's taking from outside the box again, coupled with nearly always making the right decision with passing, it's suddenly as if he's combined all the excellent aspects of his career he's picked up since it's started. We aren't really seeing any area of his game suffer at the moment, which is what we had when he was young, not enough control or maturity in the right areas, or when he was a goal scoring machine, still not the best season for him overall ability wise, he was insanely clinical, but was a mile off the form he is in now. He has really become a master on the ball now, and I still have issues with him, that's my own personal thing, but it's impossible to not acknowledge just how good he is. At his age, it's incredible to think what he could offer in the time left. I think he and Nani are on another level to our team, and when they combine properly this season, with both at the top of their game, we will see something truly devastating.

ooooh the re-writing of history.

So Rooney has skipped 3 full seasons now? Sorry, 2.5 because he came good last Jan.

What?

Simple question, was he a better player when he was scoring shit loads of goals and had his best season goal wise? No. Nowhere near as good as he is now.

In some games feck yes, he was sensational. I was at Milan away and his all-round game was magic, as it was in many other games, one game at the COMS springs to mind too.

Rooney himself just confirmed that he turned the corner long before then. He said the game against WBA was when he started to get back to his best.

He's having an incredible year, it's awesome that it started on January 1st. Since that day he's started 28 games and scored 19 goals, almost invariably from "the hole". 11 of those goals came away from home, and I doubt I need to emphasise just how many of those away goals have been absolutely huge, the kind of goals that define a "big-game player." People really haven't been appreciate enough of just how good Wayne has been this year.

edit: So there was an entire conversation whilst I was checking Rooney's stats...
