Berbatov | Fulham player

Our next 3 fixtures.

10th Bolton Away
14th Benfica Away
18th Chelsea Home

Two difficult but winnable away fixtures. With Welbeck still missing, Hernandez short of match fitness and players coming back from international duties - having Berbatov available is defintely a good thing.

I used to say that people are reading too much into Fergie not playing him but, I think Fergie will pick Chicha for Bolton even though he seems quite rusty so far as his confidence in Berba's away performances are probably shot. I'd hope Chicha play as sub for the next few games. For Bolton, rather we have Berba start and Chicha come make an impact of the bench if needed.

Berba will start Benfica though because of Chelsea at home the game after.

Still chuffed that we have a player as good as this willing to accept such a role. Could well make all the difference come May

One of his detractors said earlier, off course he is happy to just to sit there and get paid lots of money.

Am sure if he was throwing a bit of strop about it - it would have been turned around to well, he should be happy playing for a club like ours and realize it's a squad game.

He's been class attitude wise since he's been here and it has nothing to do with him being a player that is happy to get paid lots of money to sit around. Definitely very good for the club to have such a player around. Will be a long season and last season was further proof of how important having an array of good strikers is, if from the season before when we lost Rooney and had only Berba to rely on proved to be costly.

To be fair, we don't know that yet.

His play will let us know how he feels about the situation.

We kind of do though - manager has said what a good attitude he has and even Rooney has bigged him up. His demeanor on the bench when the young players have come off has also been quite good considering when other players have been known to have a poor attitude with being benched - quite outwardly showing displeasure.

His play - well that's always been subjective, especially if he doesn't score as his approach is one that easily lends to criticisms of being lazy and not caring. His detractors will quickly attribute that to having a poor attitude for being unhappy due to starting the season on the bench.

No, we really don't, regardless of what's said.

As I said, his play will dictate.

Two weeks of quiet on the Berba front. Disappointed that he did not get some match time last night and I don't really expect to see him start vs. Chelsea. But only SAF knows... It is a home match.

Anyways, read that SAF mentioned him in the press conference yesterday and supposedly said, again, that he has a hard time fitting him in the team with so many options available and that he will get his chances. It currently looks like it may be vs. Ravenclaw in the Carling Cup or Slytherin in the FA Cup.

I still can't figure out why he wasn't sold to PSG this summer, if he is going to play a bit part this season.

Did anyone see when it flashed to Berbatov on the bench just after showing the replay of Rooney playing on after the whistle and jumping into the keeper? He looked happy as Larry, chuckling away to himself.

Ironic that when he might not have appeared to be living up to the transfer fee, he was in the side all the time, and yet after such a good start to the season last year, he ends up on the sidelines. His attitude seem to have been impeccable. I hope he gets some chances soon.

Fergie had just told him he'd be starting against Chelsea.

he needs games soon

i think park/valencia/fletcher/Giggs and carrick to an extent all struggled last nite due to lack of games

5 nils and 8-2s are great but hopefully in future when the game is safe we give fringe players some minutes to get rid of the rustiness

I thought the general opinion of him last season was still divided, as some people were satisfied by his goal tally whilst others still didnt think his all round game suited us. It's not surprised me in the slightest to see him frozen out as I fell into the latter category.

The thing is, Ferguson has recognised that his style didn't work for us. He spoke of bringing Hernandez in from the Fulham game onwards last year and how he reignited our away form by giving the opposition defense some pace to fear and the space it created.

Although that was obviously a positive spin about Hernandez, reading between the lines it was Berbatov he directly replaced, so it was Berbatov's style Ferguson felt just didn't work for us.

I wonder if he'll start against Leeds and I wonder how he'd react...

his squad importance is similar to kuszcak. He had better take the next chance he gets. I dont see the point in him.

Why do you think Ferguson didn't sell him to PSG then?

I just can't sometimes understand why fans don't know that season is not a one-month sprint. It's a 10-month marathon. Players are not always in great form, there are also some injuries etc. I don't get it when after two poor performances some fans want to sell a player, after some matches on the bench some fans say we don't need him.

Berbatov, Owen, Welbeck and Macheda. That's not a bad 'bench' and we should be happy, not to moan...

Jesus, people. I thought you know something about football and how it works.

Kuszczak has little or no importance to the squad whereas Berba is 4th choice. Considering that we play 2 strikers most of the time and Bera will play plenty games this seaosn, your claim is ridiculous.

Berbatov not getting a sniff makes keeping Owen even more strange.

Without evidence I personally think there is a chance Fergie had a chat with him saying that he wouldn't be first or second choice next season and if he wanted regular first team football he could leave. We've often heard Berbatov say he loves playing for a big team and wouldn't step down and so he probably replied that he'd prefer a bit part role and to fight for his place, rather than to leave.

In this regard I think it was totally Berbatov's decision whether to go or not, and Fergie wouldn't force him out. Resigning Owen suggests to me this was the case.

Yes, I know that, but I want Randall Flagg's opinion.

Could be the same with Kuszczak :D But Berbatov was wanted by PSG, Kuszczak is not wanted anywhere.

I was very surprised we did not move him on in the summer. So that is my opinion.

I wonder if a side like Inter or Bayern had come in for him would Berbatov more likely to have gone.

But from reports it was only PSG and I think Malaga showed any interest and perhaps they were not Berbatov's prefered destination.

As for smiling on the bench last night. Perhaps he is satisfied with the way things are. Getting paid shit loads for this calander year but yet barely having to break a sweat.

I cannot think of many players who have such quality and would accept that.

No its not. I am basing my claim from this season so far. Kuszczak has been of the same importance to Berbatov.

Maybe that will change.

I often think that when I read so many posts on here. Just seems that folk don't think any further than the next match at times.

You will if we get another injured striker.

Did anyone see when it flashed to Berbatov on the bench just after showing the replay of Rooney playing on after the whistle and jumping into the keeper? He looked happy as Larry, chuckling away to himself.
Yes I did notice that. Very relaxed and cheerful he looked too.

People seem to have a short memory, of when Berbatov was at Spurs kicking a fuss because he wanted to make the move to us, back then he wanted to play football at the highest level with the right platform to do so. In fact, I remember quite clearly at the start of that season before we eventually signed him that he was left on the bench for one match for Spurs, where his attitude was criticised by their fans cause he seemed like he didn't want to be there. He has not once done this since joining us.

If Berbatov was motivated by money, he would had gone to City on that transfer deadline day instead of us where he would had been payed more. In fact, since he joined us, his attitude has always been spot on towards the club and fans (maybe not whilst on the pitch, but that is another issue) and he's always said the right things in the media despite being targeted for his inconsistent first couple of seasons with us.

All this suggests that he is content with simply continuing being part of playing at highest level of football, even if it means he has to sacrifice being just part of the team instead of being at the centre of it. So suggesting Berbatov is 'happy with being payed a shitload without breaking a sweat' is simply disrespectful to the player himself as he has been nothing but respectful to the club and a top professional throughout his united career. He has not complained the slightest about the current situation despite winning the golden boot last season, which is in contrast to Tevez who acted like a complete twat when put in a similar situation a few years ago. I'm not sure what more Berba can do to satisfy some supporters..

It's amazing that you manage to turn Berbatov not making a fuss into a slight on him.

While I'm a bit surprised he's still with us - because I don't think he's suits United's style of football, while Hernandez and Welbeck clearly do much better - I'm certainly not complaining. The money we've spent on him is long gone anyway. It's about what we can get out of him. Sheringham didn't contribute much for most of the 98/99 season. Played a bit at the start of it, then was injured and clearly fourth choice. But his contribution will never be forgotton. Berba will get his chance to shine.

And then he'll be off next summer. I don't think we intend to extend his deal even if we've got the option Gill talked about.

Berbatov not getting a sniff makes keeping Owen even more strange.

Weirdly I think Owen may actually have more of a definite role than Berba does, at present and with he CL final selection he seems to definitely be the man for 0-0 in a game we need to win come on for last ten mins type, think that is berba's main problem as good of a player as he is he just doesnt really have a style that produces a good role in our team.
