What's all this fuss about Berbatov, was there any news about him today?

A lot of papers are running a story today saying we've made a £20 mil bid for Berbatov, and then there was some quotes by his agent, I think, which sounded like the interest was definitely there.

Out of interest most of the fans on the Spurs forums seem to think it is very unlikely that they will sell him to us.
I don't know which sites you've been looking at (they vary in quality considerably), but a lot of the fans are probably, underneath it all, just translating their desire not to sell Berbatov into a view that we won't: wishful thinking in other words.

I think we probably will sell Berbatov (tho' I'm not 100% certain), but only provided the min. figure that Levy has set is paid. What I am 100% certain of is that if he goes to MUFC it'll cost you a packet.

Hes a tall, world class striker with the best first touch in the league.
I remember the stick I got on here last summer for saying that most managers, if given a choice between signing Henry and Berbatov and including a consideration of age and injury-proneness, would choose the latter.

It was true then and it's even more true now.

£20m rejected. spurs want £30m. I hope we pull out.

United's interest in 27-year-old Berbatov was revealed by the Mail Online last January when an initial inquiry about the Bulgaria international received little encouragement from Spurs. But Ferguson is still keen and though a bid of £20million has been rejected, Spurs could be more responsive if the offer reached £30m.

no-one knows what the market is
no-one on here knows how much we've been offered for ronaldo if it is 50m then berbs is worth 30m easy but if we only get 35m then we'll have egg on our face

Manchester United are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov, the Bulgaria captain's agent said on Saturday.

British media earlier reported that the European and Premier League champions had made a 20 million pounds ($39.53 million) bid for the gifted marksman, saying United were prepared to offer Berbatov 80,000 pounds a week to move to Old Trafford.

"I know for certain Manchester United have shown interest in signing Dimitar Berbatov," agent Emil Danchev told Bulgaria's Darik radio. "But I'm not entitled to make any more comments."

Last year, United also made enquiries about the possibility of signing Berbatov but he stayed with the north London club.

The striker turned down an offer from United when he joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen for 16 million euros in 2006.

The 27-year-old has been linked with some of Europe's other top clubs following excellent performances in his first two seasons in England. He was instrumental in helping Tottenham win the League Cup last season -- their first trophy since 1999.

All these fees are the press guessing. Let's not get obsessed about it. You cannot always get bargains.

We got smikes for a snip. Cantona. Ole. Irwin. Bruce. etc

Sometimes for the player you want you have to pay alittle more then you'd like, it's just how it is

Fvck it Berba, do what Ronaldo doesn't have the balls to do - put in a transfer request :D

I don't know about price or anything, and I don't think we need him - but to be honest, if we sign him, his style of play and talent will probably make him one of my favourite players.

I'll probably look at a 30 million transfer with regret, until he scores a goal or two, and then I won't really care.

been thinking about Berbatov and the kind of impact he could have. I think a similar experience could be what Yorke gave us ... ie a very talented player at a tier 2 club suddenly surrounded by class ... was a instant revelation... and if Berbetaov can give us 3 or so years of Yorkesque play a la 1999, this would be a phenominal signing.

I'd rather we went for Santa Cruz personally but I wouldn't sniff at Berba as long as he doesn't become a Billy Big Boots like er....

Dimitar Berbatov's agent is 'certain' Manchester United are interested in signing the Tottenham Hotspur striker.

Berbatov's future at White Hart Lane has been the subject of conjecture for some time, with the 27-year-old linked with a move away from North London for much of last season.

United have been strongly linked with Berbatov in the past; however a move in January failed to materialise.

Fresh reports in Saturday's press claimed that the Premier League and UEFA Champions League holders had offered £20million for the Bulgaria international.

Speaking of the rumours linking the Red Devils with a bid for Berbatov, the forward's agent has claimed United are monitoring his situation at Spurs.

SirAlexisatwat writes..
all the best technique players appear lazy, because they dont need to run around like headless chickens to do what they do best (unlike Roy 'Chicken' Keane, who had basic ability but ran around a lot).so therefore Berbatov and the rest 'stand still' and have the ability to pass anywhere on the pitch in an instant.

Berbatov is class act. An offer of 20 m is fair for him, he is 27. I wouldnt go above 20 m that's pretty ridiculous as we are not signing a 20 year old lad.

Whats the deal with his age? Anyone over the age of 25 is old now? Players generally peak around 27 years give or take 1 year or so. He's clearly a gifted footballer and would add something to us and he's entering the years in which footballers generally peak.

If Fergie thinks he's the player we need, I don't care if we pay £20M or £30M.

Agreed.

And his game isn't built around pace or athleticism. He's gonna get better and better for at least the next 4 years. Maybe more.

Anyone happen to have a list of the past £30 million+ players?

Aside from Figo and Zidane, I'm wondering who else might have fetched that fee at 27 or older.

Aside from the Chelsea/Sheva deal of course. Which is hardly something we'd like to be comparing United/Berbatov with...

Mate we are not saying he is old, dont get it wrong.

Ruud was sold for 12 millions at the age of 29 almoust reaching 30, Henry was 30 and got sold for 16 millions. Those two are considered two of the best strikers in the world and look at the fees, what we are talking is what is fair for a player depending on his age. What we are looking here is get a player for a fair price and not been fooled trying to get a player paying over the odds.

The issue is not his playing ability, but the fact It's a depreciating asset.

The times they are a changing. Prices are ridculously inflated, post-Abramovich.

Darren Bent cost almost 20 million quid.

Football isn't always about balance sheets though.

How much money has Wenger made for Arsenal?

When did he last win them a trophy?

They're not Pogue, but they don't deliberately go out to lose money.

Clearly Wengers done a remarkable job keeping debts down at Arsenal whilst building a new stadium, without getting on fans back.
