Berbatov

Price isn't an issue as long as Fergie gets his man. I really don't see the problem.

It's just a reason for the people who don't want Berbatov to complain. Just like the Carrick transfer. The money won't be an issue if/once he comes here and proves his doubters wrong.

And Berbatov is worth less than 30m according to many. And I'd rather Spurs dont screw us in the same way.

Well considering hargreaves carrick anderson and nani were about 18 million, then berbatov probably is worth between 25-30 million, he is one of the best strikers in the world, he is proven in the premiership, he has an amazing goal and assist ratio and he is a real team player who plays quality football, and he has genius inside him. he is defiantly worth 25, some may say 30, if fergie goes with that then i guess he is, please dont doubt fergies judgment.

They complained when we bought Hargreaves and all. But I get this feeling Fergie knows what he's doing. Sure, he had a dodgy spell in the transfer market 4 or 5 years ago, but he's been spot on since. I'd rather he get the player he wants than manufc58787Goal!'s wet dream, on Redcafe.

Seriously kids, I think he's deserved that much.

Exactly. If, when we got Carrick(who I think we did overpay for-but necessarily so), we were offered two Premier League titles and a Champions League, with Carrick playing more or less every game, we would have snatched their hands off. Anyone who says otherwise has a different agenda to most normal supporters IMO.

People who are making Torres comparisons should check their memory bank.

Nobody knew Torres would have a season like that. He's swapped one small pond for a slightly bigger one, and has excelled at Liverpool. He's now on course to finish 2nd behind Ronaldo in the Balon d'Or. He wasn't even close to winning that in his last season at Atletico.(A number of players being injured or off the boil has helped his case)

He wasn't worth anywhere near what he is now compared to then. The final sum including clauses will be £25m. Which I think was the right amount of money that should of been paid for him then. Like Pogue said, this is dependent on many factors. I shouldn't need to list them.

Liverpool's best bit of business ever.

Signing footballers isn't like walking into a cash and carry and heading to the aisle marked "strikers"

So many other factors to consider, like where your squad is in most urgent need of strengthening in the long-term? (i.e. if we'd signed Torres last season we probably wouldn't have had the funds to sign Nani and Anderson) and how willing the selling club are to make a sale (i.e. Atletico were ready and able to sell Torres to an English team but Spurs are desperate to avoid Berbatov doing the same)

These factors (and a load of others like them) means it's impossible to say "player a cost x million, therefore we should not pay more than y million for player b". If we get the player Fergie wants, I think it's silly to get up in arms about what it costs, that's not our concen.
Good post, and I pretty much agree with what you're saying. The point I wanted to make earlier is connected to the part of your post I've highlighted:

When the right player is available (though as others have pointed out, Torres might not have wanted to play for us), funds should be made available even if that means cutting into next years budget. In my eyes Torres is a better player than Berbatov, better value at the prices being quoted, and would fit in at utd just as well as the Bulgarian. If you disregard all other variables, I feel getting Torres last year would be the better move than buying Berbatov now, especially if a lack of funds was the only reason we didn't.

However, as you point out, there are plenty of other variables than price alone (such as us winning everything and earning more than we probably budgeted for).

I'm not saying we shouldn't buy Berbatov, I'm saying I wish we knew what we know now last year :(

I read on here a few months ago that Berbatov smokes regularly. Any truth in that? ...Not that it really matters.

Just wondered....

This is a very nice compilation about Berbatov's 2007/08 season. Not only goals but also moves etc. Well worth watching.

He's good, very good.

feck it, sign him! (just not for £28 fecking million, that's just madness)

;)

Berbatov isnt close to that either.

He has done that's for sure. I am not too keen on Berbatov but once he becomes an United player he will have my backing for certain. No gripes at all.

Berbatov is worth signing because of his goal for Leverkusen against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico alone. One of my favourite goals of recent seasons.

I think Berbatovs elegance, touch and awareness would bring out the best in those around him. I'm sure he would bring out even more from Rooney and Tevez. Also United wouldn't have to resort to sticking Ronaldo upfront as an emergency striker anymore as happened a few times last season. Berbatov would bring a greater presence upfront and help the team keep the ball better higher up the pitch in big matches.

feck sake, looks like this one is going to drag on as well.

If we're going to sign him (and I've accepted the fact that we probably will), I'd at least like to get it over and done with sooner rather than later. I've got enough stress in my personal life as it is, without needing a transfer saga on top! What are your ITK's saying GS?

Although, they are about as reliable as paper shoes.

What have you got against Berbatov, Sam?

Nothing.

I like the guy, he seems like a sound lad.

It's just that he wouldn't be my first choice and that he is ridiculously overpriced.

Tbf though, I'm slowly coming round to the idea.

As someone said, he does ooze class.

He does. He's the perfect man for Rooney to play off, too, which hopefully will bring back the "baby elephant" we saw 2 seasons ago, added with his development as a footballer and general play.

Cristiano who?

Not a bad frontline I guess though...

----------Berbatov----------

Ronaldo-----Tevez------Rooney

Hehe so all it took was a youtube video, can we then perhaps say that you hadn't actually watched enough Spurs games to really understand how good he is?
