I have said for ages that Carrick is at his best going forward. Its just he doesn't play like Scholesy. Scholes is all about runs into the box and long rand shots whereas Carrick picks out some beautiful Ronaldinho'esque through balls.
The only reason people think he is a defensive midfielder is because he is a bit more combative than the usual atatcking midfielder and his natural position is too play deep so he can get a good look at the game - he needs the freedom to get forward whenever he chooses though. The problem is so does Scholesy and Fletcher and Rooney and Giggs and Ronaldo
