Breel Donald Embolo

On the other hand, signing 2-3 players who have such qualities will actually transform our current system, and everybody benefits from it. One of the reasons there's so little space when we play is because we don't have enough players with both pace and technical quality.
Oh, I'd love to have him here. I was just having a moan about our boring football.

Ah, okay. Hopefully it will either change due to a change in manager, or due to more such players if the manager doesn't.

No disrespect but what exactly do they expect to build? They simply don't have the money or profile to become a force in Europe and aren't they already top dogs in Switzerland? Plus I'd imagine Embolo has career goals that lie outside of the Swiss league.

None taken. I just don't think they need to sell per se. They will but they will on their terms and when they feel it's the best timing

Why shouldn't they build up and make deeper runs in the CL stage or win the EL? I'm too lazy to check if my memory serves me right but didn't they reach the EL semi finals and lost to Chelsea the campaign the latter won it?
If they aren't in financial need, why sell now?

I guess they could be hoping he has a strong Euros in the summer and they can get an auction started.

No team without true financial muscle can make that happen, the big issue is they simply cannot pay the players enough or offer them any incentive to stay in a 4th tier league and never have any legitimate chance of winning big time medals and raising their profile as a world star in the game. Better funded clubs than Basel realize they are selling clubs at the end of the day.

My browser is having a hich-up so the correction of my typo from CL to EL - Europa League - didn't happen before you replied.

I'm not saying they are not selling, but not now and not for the €27m. They are in the EL and stranger things have happened than them making a deep run. There's no incentive for them throwing this and any other chance of winning domestic trophies (title, cup) away unless they are desparate for money which they are not.

Are Basel rich? they seem to have sold their other star players when offers came in, just as they did recently with that CM that went to Arsenal. I think the likelihood is they think they can bleed a bit more money out of clubs for him after the Euros, which makes business sense. I wasn't suggesting they sell now btw, I said in my first post that I think to turn down the offer they must know more can be gotten in the summer, I was just saying that I doubt they think they can keep him another few seasons and become a CL contender.

Anthony Martial's transfer fee has set a new standard for young talented players. He will be going close to what Martial cost United.

He won't, buying from Monaco is always going to be more expensive than Basel. He won't be sold for more than €40m.

Okay, then I'm with you. I don't know their finances but they never buy expensive players, play regularly CL and EL, have Novartis and VW as sponsors among others ... doesn't sound like a high maintenance club. Plus, in Switzerland they can negotiate the tax rate with the state, no? I suppose Basel will be interested in seeing their home club prosper.

As hard as it might be to appreciate, Basel don't have European ambitions to be a massive club, they're content with their place in the food chain - they are the top dogs en Suisse with a famous academy. Many probably aren't aware but they are a sister club to FC Barcelona, founded by former Basel player Joan Gamper. Same colors & initials.

They'll look to get the best deal for them & the player but tend to be conservative with Suisse players from their own academy. They recognize that the bigger talents need to go abroad to fit their game but they are rarely rushed into doing so. Embolo is both an important member of the squad and very popular among fans. I think they'd prefer to wait a season or two more but likely realize his head will get turned sooner. He's a level headed kid so hard to say. Shaqiri's early struggles after leaving impacted the NT too so that might be an influencing factor for fear of him languishing on the bench someplace bigger

Are Basel rich?

Familiar with Novartis?

The tax aspect is a good point, having looked into both what you and FCBarca posted I can see they are pretty well funded, but I imagine like any business they know their model and will sell Embolo as soon as he is ready to move, as long term they can't keep his ambition there and the cycle of development and profit will keep going.

Interesting stuff, I had no idea of any connection with Barcelona, is that why I saw you mention before that you'd like him at your club? I think the key thing will be that he will want to experience the big time in the game, and physically he is built to make a move to the PL or Bundesliga right now and fit right in I feel, I guess we'll see what happens after the Euros.

I wasn't so I Goggled them, big Pharmaceutical company, do they own Basel or just sponsor them?

Hard to tell judge him by the clips. They all seem to involve him finding himself in tons of space as I imagine is the case in the Swiss league.

FC Barca will know better and I may be wrong but IIRC the president of FC Basel is in one way or the other a family member (grand-grand daughter or some sort of that) of one of the founders of the two pharma giants that merged to become Novartis (Sandoz and Hoffmann La Roche (spell?)).
Novartis' name in on their jerseys, I recognized it because I have family members who take some of their drugs.

Combination of him/me being Suisse, it being Basel and that he has the profile of not only an exciting player but intelligent & down to earth

I expect a great Euro tournament from him, it might make sense for all involved to wait until after at least. The Bundesliga is the natural transition/destination for Suisse players but he will attract interest from everyone

Big is right. They are not owners but they are a special sort of sponsor that does more than just put their name on the kit. They are a well run club and don't need propping up financially but they have access to deep pockets nevertheless. Basel is also extremely well supported and structured so solvency or financial assistance isn't a requirement

Buy him. These are the type of players who go to the likes of Juve or Atletico and then turn into £60m type players and we wonder why we wait until they've become huge. Get him now, we can take the financial risk.

Embolo is on the radar of all European elite clubs for quite some time. He's the opposite of a hidden gem; Basel refused a bid of about €25m. I estimate his fee will be in the Martial regions.

Both, Embolo as a 9, and Dembele can play on the right wing, with Martial on the left.

Same thing but Memphis should come good next season. I'd pick same thing with martial down the middle as an AM.

Attack as a 4; - we can lack players that pass and let people dribble instead since out CB's have been our best passers. We really don't need players like Carrick anymore.

Add a box to box in there too.

I don't mean the hidden gem type, I mean the dyabla/griezman type -- well known but you know they're going to get better -- and more expensive.

Martial, Embolo, Dembele - is that what I should be hoping for next season?

All young, exciting and versatile across the front... sounds good to me!

Martial - Dybala - Embolo

Dybala being clever with his passing and playing as a false 9, that could be a dream combination.

Absolutely. It's those players we need to take a gamble on because let's be real the likes of Neymar, Müller and so on have no reason to join us at all.
