25 minutes maybe? The game was much more open in the first half. Markovic got into two good positions (particularly the one where Varane tackles him) that I think Sterling would create a chance from or score.
Think both Slippy and Sterling came on for the last 20 mins or so. Saw Slippy when he just came on and after that he was mostly anonymous.
Edit - Sterling seemed up for it. Would have been interesting to see what would have happened if he'd started.
Seems to be a lot of journalists on Twitter who are unimpressed with Rodgers tonight. One even compared him to Moyes because of his attitude to tonight's game.

He will relish in been smug about not conceding a hat-full to Madrid as most expected, but he reality is that he blew a big chance to get something from this game, Madrid were complacent and off the pace.

Slippy kept trying long balls, him starting wouldn't have made much of a difference i don't think. I agree Sterling might have been interesting though.

To a certain extent yes. But to be fair Real Madrid reminded me of United at their peak. They looked like they could score at will, and if Liverpool dared to score (which never looked likely) then Real would have just gone up the other end and scored. RM had 27 shots compared to Liverpools 9. RM had 9 on target 4 or 5 of which needed a quality save compared to ONE from Liverpool. RM 13 shots inside the box, Liverpool 1. The stats don't lie in this instance and on another night Liverpool could easily have lost by 5 or 6. The truth is Madrid did enough and never had to break a sweat doing it. The way they carved Liverpools defence open in the first half was almost criminal.
Liverpool supporters should be happy about the result, but only because Madrid never stepped up a gear, not for anything their team did well. The only positives from Liverpool's point of view were the performances of Toure and Mignolet and that their so called second team looks slightly better than their first. Although the fact their manager doesn't seem to know who should be in the first team would be more of a worry. They can of course still qualify if they win their last two games, but that's a big IF. And even if they do, teams won't be so forgiving in the knockout stages. If they draw Bayern it could be carnage.
We're not happy with the result, never happy with a loss. We're happy with the performance from effectively our fringe players. And the ability to pass the ball around at last which was our trademark last season. Need to push on, but encouraging going into the Chelsea match. If Sturridge can be available for that then this Madrid game has put us on a good footing (minus the result which was a bit meh).
This is the point I was making really, Madrid felt they didn't need to try too hard to win, and imo didn't put in what they have been doing.
Brendan in his interview after seemed to feel vindicated by his decision to drop so many players, where as in reality he has only made things more difficult for himself, in that he may as well have played Gerrard and co and lost doing things the 'right way', but instead he has the media on his back, and has now piled the pressure on for the Chelsea game.

Now, I didn't watch the game but the stats of 27 shots of Madrid to 4 of Liverpool, 9 shots on target to 1 of Liverpool, 7 corners to 1 tell a different story. How come they were very unfortunate not to get anything from a game if they had only 1 shot on target and opposition had 9?

It's not a bad result in isolation, but when you want to qualify.. anything other than a draw is a bad result. The defeatist attitude from Rodgers is embarrassing, an insult to the Champions League, and an Insult to the Liverpool FC.
They're clamoring for the European Nights but tuck their willies in, bent out, and probably lubed themselves well and let Madrid ram cocks in ass (borrowing spartacus terms). It's one thing parking the aeroplane to gain a point, but the way they're set up, they don't even try to win it.
I don't recall any teams seriously having this kind of attitudes (like almost virtually going out to say that they throw the match) even when they already qualified.
And furthermore, they are in still a good spot to qualify, they just need to beat Basel and Ludogoretz, the former is a home game and the later is very well beatable opponent, but they chicken out in the 4th fixture....pathetic.

There's not a single Liverpool player who gets in the Madrid side, though Arbeloa and Casillas aren't really so brilliant anymore. The other 9 spots is a goddamn no-contest, especially with Sturridge out.
They need to get someone better at transfers in, though. Moreno looks really promising but they need a CM or 2 desperately, as well as center back. Skrtel has played well for a while now, but Lovren and Sakho aren't looking so hot.

That's 4-5 starters they need, and that's giving Coutinho the benefit of the doubt. Obviously someone young and talented like Markovic or Sakho could start playing well, but that's where the next 100 million should go. They should probably just hire a German to spend it. At their best, Liverpool play a quick passing game that is sort of like the German National Team.
But yeah, I was impressed by how obviously his squad players did the basic stuff in terms of playing decent football right. They were outclassed, but the basic foundation of ability to pass under pressure and proper spacing off the ball was there.
Basel will be a big test. Much less about general play and development and much more about ability to get a result, which is the kind of thing I have no idea if Rodgers will do well.

I think it's just that the pressure is getting to him. He believed his own publicity from last season far too much, then wasted the Suarez money and more in the Summer. It's all crumbling down around him and he doesn't know what to do about it.
I love how he's trying to justify this, pretty embarrassing really. This was a big CL game against real madrid, a game where liverpool actually needed to get something out of it, you've got to throw at them your best players, it really doesn't matter that they didn't get humiliated, it's still loss at the end of the day.
@NoPace One of the journo's compared Rodgers mentality last night to Moyes at Everton when he said all he wanted was to get out of Old Trafford alive. I can see what he means. Rodgers basically threw the towel in and apparently it didn't go down to well in Madrid. Ancelotti & his staff were bemused by the whole thing, according to Balage. Ludogorets almost got something v Madrid so why not Liverpool?

Well of course Captain Obvious but most Liverpool supporters were dreading the absolute worst and will, I'm sure, have been somewhat relieved that it wasn't a mauling after all. Forget the team-sheet and just offer them a 1-0 competitive loss before kick off and most would have bitten your hand off.

I disagree with that, a manager is different from a player and Moyes only "managed" us for one season so if he goes to Livers I dont see a huge problem with that, however their fans might. If they sign Moyes they might as well start waving the white flag from now.
