Do you think there will be a Deal or No Deal?

Unrestricted access to the single market helped the UK a great deal. Even now, around half of UK exports go to EU countries. No wonder why the tones are changing and the Brexiteers in government are back paddling furiously.

Oh?

You make it sound like trade with the uk and eu will stop but it wont, it will carry on with tariffs.

its not as simple as that. First of all it all UK based companies will lose their ability to bid for contracts and tenders within the EU market. Secondly if tariffs are introduced then all products coming from the UK will become more expensive for Europeans to buy. The prices will get higher if tariffs are introduced on semi finished products (ex car parts needed to assemble a car).

The Thatcher reforms in the 80s were responsible for the transformation of the British economy. That's why they served as a template for national economic reform around the world, including that of countries in Eastern Europe.

Britain joined the Common Market in the early 70s, and was in even worse economic condition by the time Thatcher took office in 1980.

I'm very much on the liberal side of things, but to be fair I think she presided over a push away from union power that was probably needed at the time. Obviously they went far too far with it, but I think things generally get fecked if the needle tilts too far in either direction. Britain really was a mess economically back in the 70's.

Yes I know, but you don't have to have tariffs

It was needed, just the manner in which it was executed was despicable. Maybe Cameron should have sought change in the EU by sending in mounted police to bash them all round the head, seems to work.

Correct but if I wanted to trade with you and you likewise we'd just do it. Ebay stylee

that can happen if there's a level playing field and the UK remains a member of the EU/EEA. It doesn't seem to be the case. The UK chose to leave the EU so it can change its rules and a change in relationship has an impact on everything including trade

Indeed, the world could be tariff free and the eu could stick with tariffs. That would be better.

Actually the EU score low in terms of protectionist measures. The most protectionist countries happen to be the US (and that's before Trump took over) followed by India, two countries Theresa May had been wagging her tail at for quite some time in a bid of getting that bold free trade deal of hers.

But who cares about those markets. There's always Nigeria and Saudi Arabia to make a free trade agreement with

It's especially incredible considering how much of Britain's eldery population are actually having their arse cleaned by a European nurse right now. But then, what else can you expect from someone wh prefers living in an EU nation and constantly shittalks the UK.

Americas economic progress under Reagan was moreso due to Volcker. Reagan's fiscal policy was reckless to say the least. But... getting some people to change the views they haven't already committed in this thread is futile (and frustrating). In general, homemade economists are dangerous and usually dense.

There are always better deals out there than with the dirty old men of europe.

The Vatican doesn't do trade deals (I think)

On a serious note, May's idea of parallel talks (divorce and trade deal) had been shot down by the EU who prefers an orderly divorce then to make a trade deal with the UK. A trade deal with the UK scores low in the EU agenda

Ahhh the classic 'we don't need European trade we can trade elsewhere' line. Tell that to all the UK companies dependent on an EU customer base that don't have a demand elsewhere in the world. There's allot of them.

On my daily route from my London home (in zone 3) to work (in zone 1) I will see about one or two Eastern European 'beggars' who I just walk past. No beggars at bus stops, very few if any outside tube stations, zero anywhere within the tube station itself, and maybe 1 or 2 on my walk to the office from the station. There are usually one or two I feel sorry for and maybe even contribute by buying them food or some change. At no point do I feel any of them might be a drugged crazy that will stab me for 20p. And I know for 90% of the people 'on the street' there is help even if it doesn't directly take them off the street at once.

If I saw any more homeless than that, and in worst state, i.e. children (no I don't mean the Eastern European ones wearing brand new Nike t-shirt trainers while their mums beg) then I would probably break down in tears. People in London just aren't used to seeing squalor that Europeans and Amercians have become accustomed to in their major cities. These are the unquantifiable differences between living in London and other major western cities.

Having lived for almost 10 years in Milan and about 2 in London, I must say this is the first major difference I've noticed. No beggars. In Italy, you have them everywhere, from bus stops, tube, to knocking on your door sometimes.

I imagine its like that across most of southern and eastern Europe.

sharing the spoils

Didn't British politicians vote to prevent info about peado politicians being released. I remember something along those lines. Dirty old men.

Yeah, fair point. Maybe when the EU have a decades long paedo scandal they can deserve the title too.

Whatever you're selling to devilish, I'll produce it in China and sell it at 80% of your price and flood the market with that product and you'll never sell it again to devilish
I will cos i have an agreement with him, no tariffs and no chinese involvement. Just civilised business.

Agreement for what , one contract. If there are no tariffs and regulations anywhere how do you stop the chinese product invading the market. Business is cut-throat

I could be wrong but it sounds like an agreement to not buy products from other sellers which is a protectionist agreement and of the worst kind.

Having an agreement with someone to supply a product is fine and that it could be exclusive is fine but that would be for a limited period and if the agreement is tariff-free then suppliers from the same country as devilish would have the same rights.

I think Stan is advocating tariff free worldwide which sounds nice but is unworkable as you lose control and becomes one of Stan's pet hates, a race to the bottom.

Devilish is in the eu and has agreed to pay billions to china not to produce anything, the farmer model its called.
