Do you think there will be a Deal or No Deal?

  • Total voters

  • Poll closed .
Yeah that's probably accurate. But how many of these projects would we like to keep paying for and to keep getting the benefits?

If I was PM, I'd keep us in the EU, democracy be damned. Well not exactly, I'd ask to renegotiate something that 66% of the UK are happy with. Lots of European ministers were saying, if it is "out", then renegotiate.

Missing the point completely. If you're running an organization and you want your members to vote on something you make sure you have negotiated the terms & conditions before you vote on it. What the government have done is amateurish to say the least.

 @ the unemployment should be illegal comment.

That's just the kind of absurd rhetoric that the general public of today can get behind.

"If i get elected, I pledge to solve the jobs crisis by making unemployment illegal!"

"Here, here!" cried the masses, oblivious to the fact that they'd spelt it wrong in their heads.

What exactly would you do about it?

You'll never be a politician, they only promise things to get elected, doesn't mean that they will actually do anything once they get elected.
Well the elected members of the eu passed a motion to tackle it. What have they done? Nothing! You are paying them to not act on important things and discuss the size of fruit. Stop payimg.

Just watching reacting from around Europe on Newsnight - they really don't give a shit about us  They're gonna give us a tough time to say the least.

[No I did not post this ten minutes ago in the wrong thread ]

:boring: repeat, repeat, repeat....

The "brexit bill" is based on us having committed to EU budgets that span into the 2020s, so I'm not sure how it's surprising that the amount supposedly owed is several years worth of contributions.

That's not the case, it's an extremely simplistic media based way of looking at it, and not a legal view. You don't mention the UK share of the EU's assets either. Legally we don't owe them, but we will have to pay one way or another for 'free' access to the common market.

It's very weird that the UK financial collapse hasn't happened as predicted in this thread (yes the £ has sunk, but it has been lower whilst in the EU), but the doomsday scenario hasn't played out.

I was responding to the idea that these were hidden extra fees that we hadn't been told about.

We haven't left yet and the decline will be both gradual and felt far more away from London and the SE.

The unemployment rate in France is nearly double that of north European countries , all are in the EU ,as well as Spain 18%, Italy 12%.
I don't blame the unemployment rate in France on the EU, no more than the UK praise the EU for their low unemployment rate

I've only lived and worked in the UK and France.
For me the major part of the blame for the UK's problems on the UK government and likewise the french government for France's problems.

Now the Uk complain about poor services, poor infrastructure and so on but don't want to pay for it through their taxes . Now France complain about high unemployment but work a 35hr week, want to retire at 60 and don't want overtime unless it's double or triple pay. On top of that businesses and shops work mainly 5 days a week, hardly any shops are open on Sunday and other than supermarkets are closed usually one day in the week as well and still some shut from 12 till 2pm. More businesses open longer mean more jobs means more spending and the economy improves.
I don't know what it is actually living in other EU countries but the problems I mentioned have little to do with EU laws or otherwise.

Future of Gibraltar at stake in Brexit negotiations
EU guidelines make clear bloc will not overrule Spain in any trade or sovereignty dispute involving British overseas territory

The EU has put the future of Gibraltar at stake in the coming Brexit negotiations, effectively backing Spain in its centuries-old dispute with the UK over the British overseas territory.

After lobbying from Spanish diplomats, a clause has been inserted in the EU’s draft Brexit negotiating guidelines that appears to allow Spain to exclude Gibraltar from any transitional single market access arrangement or future trade deal with the UK if it is not satisfied with the status of the territory.

HOLLANDE ON BREXIT - OCTOBER 2016.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/oct/07/uk-must-pay-price-for-brexit-says-francois-hollande

After a week in which London appeared to be gearing up for a clash in talks, Hollande made clear he was more resolved than ever that EU countries must be firm with the UK in order to preserve the cohesion of the bloc and put off other countries seeking to follow Britain’s lead.

There must be a threat, there must be a risk, there must be a price, otherwise we will be in negotiations that will not end well and, inevitably, will have economic and human consequences,” the French president said.

“Britain has decided on a Brexit, I believe even a hard Brexit. Well, we must go all the way with Britain’s will to leave the European Union,” he told a dinner in Paris attended by the EU commission president, Jean-Claude Junker, and the EU’s top Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier.

Brexit was never going to be an easy thing.

It doesn't look so good so far and will probably get much worse.

I have my popcorn ready for the fallout
Oh yes most of us knew it would be painful, but this in particular wont go down well the the right wing press.

What do you expect him to say, oh it's alright, you can still have the same benefits but don't worry , you don't have to pay anything or have to take any immigrants and all the rest.
We're going to get the same Brexit line, aren't we, those horrible EU people didn't let us have our cake and eat it. This is one of the most infuriating things about this.
The Uk decided to leave, fair enough, take the consequences of that action and stop blaming everyone else for it, because they're running out of people to blame.

Its funny how the Brexit line has changed from: "they have to give us a great deal because we buy all of their exports"

To: "the EU are such bunny boilers, they wont give us a good deal"

It's the arrogant superiority complex and it's always everybody else's fault. The state of the NHS, the supposed uncontrolled borders, the awful infrastructure etc etc etc are all supposedly the fault of the EU and nothing to do with the inefficient government both present and past . Wake up Britain!

Wouldn't that just be going back to where they've been before, a closed border with Gibraltar? I've only read your quote, but it's not saying Spain is threatening Britain as a whole, which it didn't before, just Gibraltar.
The first objective is joint sovereignty and the second is to regain total sovereignty by making the Gibraltans see that they'd be better off in the EU under those circumstances. They have got their plan worked out - in fact their minister of foreign affairs explained it to the public back around Xmas time, the country on its side and the EU now actively supporting them. According to the Telegraph nobody saw this coming :lol::lol:

We've got Boris Johnson, though.:annoyed:

I wonder how the Conservative ( and Unionist ?) Party would go about explaining the loss of the Straits of Gibraltar and therefore control of a strategic point in the naval world order and the loss of the nuclear submarine base in Scotland ? By bringing out a new Vera Lynn LP maybe ?

Same plan from Spain as before then, when Gibraltarians seemed to prefer not being Spanish despite a closed border, so I don't see much happening really.

It might be different if Spain tried to block trade agreements with Britain itself, which is why I was asking.

As for all the empire bollocks, if Gibraltarians did vote to leave Britain, I'm sure their wishes would be respected pretty quickly, bearing in mind Scotland could have gone three years ago if they'd wanted to. Britain's been divesting itself of territories for 60 years, it's hardly new, all they have to do is vote for it.

Oh...I don't know...

He might have said something along the lines of "We regret that the UK is leaving, but we're hoping that we will be able to reach an amicable agreement with them for the benefit of the remaining 27 members of the EU"

And I'm not blaming the EU or UKIP or Cameron or Johnson or immigrants or whoever and whatever for what's happened in the UK - you guys seem to blame the 52% who voted out for everything that's wrong in the UK at the moment, but go ahead and deal with your disappointment how you want. Shit, I don't even live in the UK

But that doesn't mean I can't have my own thoughts about the EU and whether it's good or bad - and when I post I post about the EU, not BREXIT

No I blame the government as I have said plenty of times on here, the 52% and the government try to shift the blame on the EU. I think the UK are making an enormous mistake but apparently the only way I can be proved right is to wait two three or four years or even more and if I am right then I'm supposedly wishing ill on the UK.

What seems to have escaped the Brexit brigade is that the UK decided to leave the club (not being thrown out) and still expect to use all the facilities. How many times have we heard from Brexiters that the EU is dying or dead or that they hope it breaks up or the Euro won't exist in a few years time, that's fine but as soon as someone defends the organisation that they belong too, shock horror, the Brexit camp is upset.

The useless austerity and neoliberal way of working can definately be traced to the eu leaders, this is then compounded by a stupid currency thoght up by the french most likely. Your problem is that you see european governments and the eu as not at all connected in any way but you are wrong.

You've literally spent the best part of two years arguing the opposite of that and how the EU has had no effect on your life.
