Bundesliga 13/14

Well I can't really judge that but considering that I found English to the easiest to learn language it might be true.

I guess Dutch would be the easiest to learn for Germans but I never got around to trying to learn it, I just know that I understand it very roughly when reading it and that without ever learning anything about it.

German and English are very similar grammatically whereas French and the like are virtually backwards in comparison. Dutch is very much like German, my missus watches all these tv shows about the Amish and they are always speaking Pennsylvania Dutch, I can make out most of it even with my limited German skills.

Pennsylvania Dutch does not have anything to do with dutch but with German. The heritage comes from Southwest Germany and the German part of the swiss. But yes - I think you can understand dutch as a German very well when you hear it some time - I think it is even easier than understanding some of the Swiss German.

I do not see much more similarities between the Grammar of German and English than between German and French.

I don't know French or German but German is meant to be easy for English speakers for some reason like Spanish and Italian are similar in that regard or something. I'm not expert though.

Watching the cup tie between Dortmund and some 4th division team. They just took a drinks break in the middle of the first half....I know it's hot but that's just weird

Well it's the old cup problem where lower league teams defend with tooth and nail and make it difficult for any team to find a way through. That being said Dortmund always had trouble with very defensive teams that offered them no space to make good use of their pace.

Aub has had three golden chances and what a chance for the minnows as well. Excellent game

Aubameyang with another miss. Some pass from Gundogan there.

Great pass from Hofmann for the second goal, another great attacking midfield talent. It's kind of scary when you think hoe many good players we already have in the AM positions and Meyer and Hoffmann are looking very promising as well.

Concerning the talents Germany has atm in the AM strata here would be my list atm. I think it could be debated if Özil belongs in tier 2 because I feel his is less complete as a player if you compare them to Draxler and Götze who both are more of a goal threat than Özil but I think Özil's passing ability is actually unmatched from anyone else in Germany so I did put him into tier 1.

Tier 1: Götze & Draxler & Özil.
Tier 2: Reus & Müller & Kroos.
Tier 3: Schürrle & Podolski & Kruse & Herrmann.

Upcoming: Meyer (1) & Hofmann (1/2).

Of course Podolski isn't really a talent anymore and Kruse is 25 already but I still included him. Okay scrap that about talents, it's more a list of players that have a chance of getting a place in the German national team for upcoming competitions.

Edit: just remembered I forgot Patrick Herrmann.

Edit 2: One combination I really would like to see is Draxler--Özil--Götze and either Müller or Reus in front of them.

Martinez did very well at CB in la liga and played well there against us in the europa. Think its obviously an option even if he's rusty from not playing there since going to Bayern

I dont know how anyone can put Podolski in a paragraph about German talents

Well to be honest Özil, Götze, Reus and Müller aren't really talents anymore either, they are already established top players. So yeah it's not really a list of talents but more of players our national team could employ in one of the three AM spots and Podolski somehow is still in contention for these spots.

Really? How? Having just studied a bit of German, I'd say the grammatical differences are vast.

Its quite similar in grammar I think. Yes there are differences, but they arent too vast. Other languages are quite a lot different in that matter. And since beside from pronunciation the hardest part about german is grammar it makes things alot easier.

I think its fine to refer to them as talents as they are players who have done great for their club sides and are clearly among the most talented German players.

But Podolski? He failed at Bayern and even though he definitely contributed to Arsenal last season there were definitely times people were questioning him even at that level last season

Well I'm far from a Podolski fan and I think he could have been a much better player if he would give more of a feck, still he is in or around the national team and not totally undeserved as I think he is still a fairly good player in his limited way at least I think that players like Schürrle aren't any better, that's the only reason he still is in that list.

So do you rate Podolski as weaker as the players I put him into one bracket with or do you just think he should not be in the list becuase he has reached his sealing and can't be seen as a talent anymore?

He's clearly not as good as any of them and that includes Schurrle. Yes he's been effective for the national team, but so is Klose. I wouldnt expect him on that list either.

I've been pronouncing it Bun-dez-liga all my life. The other week, my mate's part German girlfriend told me it's pronounced Bun-de-liga. I've been living a lie.
Solius, I expected better from you here. Believing a girl when it comes to football - tut.

Anyone see Kießling's miss v Lippstadt?

@ NoLogo

I literally have no idea how we could line up for the National side if Özil, Götze, Müller, Reus, Draxler, Klose, Schürrle, Podolski are all fit. :wenger:

If we lined up without a proper striker:

Müller
Reus - Özil - Götze perhaps?

The girl is wrong. You are right. Spank her for interferring with something she doesnt have a clue about and go on.

The first round of the DFB-Pokal (german FA cup) was played over the weekend, four more games are today including Schalke and Bayern. As usual a few surprises happened. So far 4 of the 18 Bundesliga teams went out against lower league teams. Bremen, Gladbach, Braunschweig and Nürnberg are the unlucky ones. A few more struggled heavily and scored late (Dortmund looked clueless for about 70minutes for example), Hertha and Freiburg needed to go through extra time.

The results of the games with Bundesliga teams involved:

RB Leipzig (3rd division) – FC Augsburg 0:2 (0:1)
SG Aumund-Vegesack (5th) – TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 0:9 (0:0)
SV Lippstadt 08 (4th) – Bayer 04 Leverkusen 1:6 (1:3)
SC Fortuna Köln (4th) – 1. FSV Mainz 05 1:2 (1:1)
TSG Neustrelitz (4th) – SC Freiburg 0:2 (after extra time)
SV Wilhelmshaven (4th) – Borussia Dortmund 0:3 (0:0)
Karlsruher SC (2nd) – VfL Wolfsburg 1:3 (0:1)
1. FC Saarbrücken (3rd) – Werder Bremen 3:1 (1:1, 1:0) after extra time
SV Darmstadt 98 (3rd) – Bor. Mönchengladbach 5:4 (0:0) after penalties
Arminia Bielefeld (2nd) – Eintracht Braunschweig 2:1 (1:0)
SC Victoria Hamburg (4th) – Hannover 96 0:2 (0:0)
SV Schott Jena (5th) – Hamburger SV 0:4 (0:0)
BFC Dynamo (5th) – VfB Stuttgart 0:2 (0:1)
VfR Neumünster (4th) – Hertha BSC 2:3 (2:2, 1:2) after extra time
FV Illertissen (4th) – Eintracht Frankfurt 0:2 (0:0)
SV Sandhausen (2nd) – 1. FC Nürnberg 4:3 (1:1) after penalties

Upcoming games today:
FC Nöttingen (5th) – FC Schalke 04
BSV Schwarz-Weiß Rehden (4th) – FC Bayern München

Is the German Fa Cup seen as prestigious and as serious as ours?
It's really big with the fans and the clubs. The cup games always have their own match day, even the semi finals with only 4 teams taking part. There isn't any shifting around to fit single games in the club's time table like in England. The final is always played as the last domestic game of the season on a Saturday evening in Berlin and most football fans look forward to it. TV ratings for the final are great as well - usually more than 40% of all tv viewers watch the game on that evening. Huge amounts of fans travel to the city and celebrate, the cup final weekend is really a great thing to experience. There's a lot of money in it as well, it's really important for smaller Bundesliga clubs to go far and even the big clubs take it seriously all the time. For example, since 2003 every year Bayern won the league they also won the cup. Schweinsteiger never won one without the other. I'd say it's a brilliant competition with lots of exciting moments in the last decade.

Starting today with a true classic. Bayern is playing Gladbach at home. I don't even try to predict Bayern's formation, everything's possible. Thiago has a fever, Gustavo has the popular "I want to leave the club" injury, Götze still not fit enough for a competitive game, but he will play his first few minutes for Bayern in a friendly on Sunday.

This weekend's fixtures:

Friday:
19:30 Bayern München - Bor. Mönchengladbach

Saturday:
14:30 Bayer Leverkusen - SC Freiburg
14:30 Hannover 96 - VfL Wolfsburg
14:30 1899 Hoffenheim - 1. FC Nürnberg
14:30 FC Augsburg - Borussia Dortmund
14:30 Hertha BSC - Eintracht Frankfurt
17:30 Eintracht Braunschweig - Werder Bremen

Sunday:
14:30 1. FSV Mainz 05 - VfB Stuttgart
16:30 FC Schalke 04 - Hamburger SV

Cheers for that. Maybe it was a different competition i was thinking of when it looked like a few big names were getting knocked out in quite early rounds. I think it was maybe the French Cup.

That's my night sorted anyway. Should be a good game to really see what Bayern will be like this season.

Gladbach to shock Pep and Bayern - 1-1.

Guess we'll see:
Neuer - Lahm, van Buyten, Boateng, Alaba - Schweinsteiger - Robben, Müller, Kroos, Ribéry - Mandzukic

We've destroyed Gladbach in pre-season, but I'm quite sure this game will be different. Gladbach was always really tough to beat for us since Favre took over. What I've seen so far looks a lot like what van Gaal tried to do, I'm not sure if Pep is underrating or misjudging the style of the league. Wouldn't be surprised if we don't win today.

There are always a few big names going out in the earlier rounds. But usually that's not because the club doesn't take the competition serious, most of the time it's because of players being arrogant or new squads, new managers still needing more time. Also, usually the lower leagues start the season 2-3 weeks earlier than the Bundesliga, which is a bit of an advantage. Like I mentioned above, 4 of the 18 Bundesliga clubs went out in the first round. I don't think that takes anything away from the competition though, it makes it even more exciting, imo. Everyone can beat anyone in a one off game.

Bayern are going to be very unpredictable over the next few weeks. No telling what Guardiola will do or if if will work.

line up Bayern:
Neuer - Alaba, Dante, Boateng, Lahm - Schweinsteiger, Robben, Ribéry, Kroos, Müller - Mandzukic
