Can we keep £90m Lukaku on the bench?

What if we already paid the bonus?
Unlikely, he hasn’t done anything that would normally be in a clause,

1) win the premier league
2) premier top scorer
3) win a euro cup
4) win a cup competition
5) wins balon’dor

I’ll be assuming that the bonuses would be smaller payouts tied to multiple stipulations, infact the only one I can think of would be finishing in the top 4 but that wouldn’t be a £15m payout clause

He was a bad fit for us from the start. We were left with a choice that summer of Morata or Lukaku. We ended up with the best one but both have been awful transfers for their retrospective clubs.

Hopefully we can offload for £50m plus. Someone will take him, not one of the elite clubs but I’m sure the likes of Everton would have him back. He’s still young and has a years left in his contract.

Every time he comes on he looks clumsy and lost. I know he never had great ball control but it doesn’t even exist anymore.

£45-50m is probably reasonable. His salary means that the vast majority of clubs who would want him couldn't afford him so we'd be relying on a small minority of clubs like Everton being interested.

Lukaku is neither good enough nor he is the type of player for ManUtd.

What’s the point of having a player like that on the bench?

We might as well give a chance to Greenwood of the bench. He is probably not good enough yet, but at least he might be in some time.

Sell Lukaku.

I mean he came on and was absolutely useless, stealing a living as they say.

HE's just not a fit for this team and needs moving on.

He is only good on the counter when he can buffel his way to goal.
No finesse, poor technique and poor hold up play.

Cut losses & sell

Literally adds nothing when he comes on, if anything makes things worse

Doubt he will be too happy on the bench. Could probably recoup 60 million out of what we paid for him.

He should get his chance at Arsenal, but yeah don't see how he fits really.

As others have said, his main threat comes on the counter and we're going to play a much more possession-based game under OGS. He could be a useful bench option but doubt he'll settle for that.

I would be willing to give him a chance. I was very excited when we bought him, but obviously he had been very disappointing, mainly this season. But, he can still be a very good option off the bench. Buying proven scorers, is probably the most difficult player to buy. Id want to give him a chance first, before we discarded him so easily. But he would want to have to stay knowing hes back up for Rashford as we speak. There is a good player in him, and if he can get back too that he'd be a quality option for us.

I’ve lost all hope. He’s Bebe level at the moment.

I don't see a problem from United's perspective of keeping Lukaku until Greenwood is a serious option in a few years' time. It could well be that Lukaku gets fed up being a back-up player before then.

I think today he didn't do that bad today defensively, but he is striker and offensively doesn't fit the fluid front side we are playing under Ole. I think we should sell in the summer.

There is a shortage of strikers in football at the moment. We'd have no shortage of offers and would struggle to replace him.

Shortcomings aside (we all know what they are) he still scores 25-30 a season in a good attacking team. It's dangerous to undervalue that

Easy in the current market, if Callum Wilson is 50 plus. He's a Belgian international and would suit another side.
Yeah we can get 60 for sure. He's still a good player and there are plenty of clubs that need a goalscorer.

He literally lost so many balls because of bad touches!

We all know what type of player he is by now. His cameo today was reflective of his entire time under Mourinho. Nobody around him. Getting the ball 40 yards from goal. That isn't his game! Our first half dominance would have suited him a lot more. He'd likely have scored

We better sell him fast cause his value will only drop. The man cannot trap any kinda ball (aerial or on the ground) to save his life
This unfortunately. Lukaku is not going to fit in with any team looking to play fast och fluid football. He would be good for a mid-table side using him as a battering ram up front.

We all know he's a very good player. He can finish, he's extremely fast, very strong, and a total hassle for defenders.

But like most players he needs to play. Form and confidence are as important as skill and ability, and if he's not playing he's unlikely to suddenly hit form..

He'd bring in big money, because he's one of the best strikers in the world.. But if he wants to stay (and we're clearly stronger with him) he needs to be played into form. We're a bigger force with him. How to get him into form though... Come on Ole!

IF Pochettino comes in there might be a chance of using Lukaku as a makeweight for Kane, you never know, imagine a front 3 next season of Rashford, Martial and Kane, blimey!

Any great club has XXXpensive players sitting on the bench, flop or TopSub or "Plan A turned into Plan B but still works"

That's one of the marks of a GREAT club.

I'd play Greenwood ahead of him at the moment. Until he gets himself back in shape to play as a quick(ish) striker, he should not be getting games outside of the FA cup and against low-rate opposition.

If we didn't know his price, he'd be as 'loved' as Fellaini.

I have not seen him being extremely fast, very strong or a total hassle for defenders. If anything, it seems like opposition get some relief when he is subbed on. I am sure Ole sees Rom in training every day, and at the moment I do not see Lukaku displacing any of our attackers. Even when he comes on against tired legs, he does nothing of note. If he can't show his skills for 15-20 minutes against Brighton, how on Earth is he going to hassle City, Pool or PSG? I actually expect more from Alexis than from big Rom.

Make you right. If you want to be at top top club then when you enter the dressing room, expect to see world class players playing in your position. Also expect no matter how well you are playing, if another top player comes available, for them to sign them too.

You wasted one of your few posts a day to post this? Anything constructive? Lukaku has never been good enough in my eyes for us.

Just to clarify, I don't think he is a very good player. I sincerely hoped he would be. But his inconsistency in front of goal is mind boggling and not good enough for any team aiming for top 5 or above. He scores goals when his team least need them and there is least pressure. For example when we are already winning or playing weak opposition. This is what gets his numbers up.

Without doubt his first touch is barely even Championship level and his decision making is equally simple.

He is strong, seems to defend well from the front and helping out defending set pieces but he's not even an effective target man (despite his size making him look like he should be) because his first touch and decision making is so poor. Admittedly his confidence is rock bottom at the moment and he is a confidence player. I see him as a poacher, but a not very good one I'm afraid.

He'll keep quiet this season but with a major championship coming up in 2020, and if he is still on the bench, then I would expect his agent to engineer a move in the summer

Although to be honest I cannot see any top team with any intelligence and financial prudence willing to fork out silly money based on his CV with us

Rom came on and balls pinged off him again. He doesn’t help the defence and he didn’t score, which exposes his performances. He tries but is incapable of defending from the front by controlling and holding the ball. Losing the ball so easily, they were able to counter. His options are limited and I can’t see him remaining after summer.

Cost us tons of Wonga and surprised me that Jose bought him when he never fancied him, hence loaning him out when chelski boss.

After seeing him in a red shirt I can confirm he is totally crap. For the money United paid you'd expect him to be able to control a ball and have some skills.

Alas he has no skills of note and is crippling our wage bill. If anyone wants him they can have him period. Doubt we will get our cash back but £55-£65 million would be excellent business. He slows the play down, and is at present a total liability to the fast paced forward line we are now using.

OGS is no dummy and he will have seen him in training and told the board to get rid asap. I'm expecting at least 5 departures this season be it January window or end of season. Too many people pretending to be footballer when all they are is mercenaries after lots of cash for no effort. Tara Jones, Bailly, Rojo, Lukaku, Smalling, Young, Darmian etc

Sell Lukaku.

Hard to argue with any of the above , think he will be sold in the summer .

I don't really understand people's enthusiasm for getting rid of him. He came on and scored in a tight game against Newcastle, a game in which none of our starting forwards looked that impressive.

Yeah, his form isn't nearly as good as Rashford's right now, but I can't think of any forward who's in better form than Rashford right now. And, yeah, his link up play and hold up play may be atrocious, but I'd still prefer him over anyone else in the box when we're putting crosses in.
