Carrick, Blind, Jones, Rojo all out for the Chelsea game - What now?!

----------------De Gea
Rafael----Smalling--McNair--Shaw
-----Valencia--Herrera--Fellaini
Mata--------Rooney------Young

Keep it solid in the middle. Tell Valencia to play a hybrid midfielder/RB role. Big test for Herrera though.

Actually not too bad of a lineup considering. Keep it tight then bring on Di Maria to steal the winner.

What a big game for Paddy eh

Don't worry Smalling's in. I ain't got no worries, big Chris will do the job for us.

Jinxed it haven't i?

The starting XI have, but they're fecking crocked.

I meant if those beyond the first 11 as well. We will see. Like some other posters, I am a bit surprised that LVG would actually state so categorically that all those players will not play. Let's see if there is some kidology at work here.

They will all start against Chelsea.

So far this season everyone that Van Gaal has said is out, rather than a doubt, has not played. Prepare for the worst.

Expect pragmatism and rightly so.

The same things would be talked about in here and in the match one. But hey, that's just me.

That seems the lesser of two (incredibly minor) evils, as far as I can tell. The most important thing is that the widest audience see it, any duplication of discussions just means that more people are spending more time talking about it...which doesn't sound like an issue on a forum. The only minor inconvenience is that people have to read the same discussion twice...and it's very easy to avoid doing that.

This is bad news, would snap your hand off for the draw.

I would go with:

De Gea

Valencia -- McNair-- Smalling -- Shaw

---------Fellaini --Herrera---------------
Di Maria---------Mata---------Young

--------------Rooney----------------

I just hope they are back soon, still some massive games to come, tricky away games with Palace and Everton - we need a full strength squad.

Please be mind games, though LvG strikes me as being exceptionally honest.

Does LVG have previous for stating players are injured when they miraculously appear on the team sheet before the start.. Like a mind game..

Or im becoming delusional and looking for any hope :D

DDG
Rafael - Smalling - Shaw - Young
Valencia
Mata - Herrera - Fellaini - Di Maria
Rooney
Shaw is 6ft+, right?

God knows. Not looking forward to this game now.

What the hell happened?

I guess Fellaini will have to play deeper and Rooney joins them and then McNair alongside Smalling. I can't see Van Gaal playing Mata or Di Maria in midfield alongside Fellaini and Herrera, but then it's not like he's got many choices.

Everything was going so well but injuries once again come along and slap us in the face.

Id move Herrera into the holding role, and play Di Maria on the right side of the midfield three. McNair and Shaw in defense, if Shaw isn't fit then Rafael to left back.

Still confident. An injury ravaged United is still infinitely better than what QPR fielded last week, and they looked more likely to win that game. If Isla and the ancient Clint Hill can keep Hazard and Willian quiet, then we'll be alright. All the pressure is still on them.

De Gea

Valencia Smalling McNair Shaw

Herrera Rooney Fellaini
Mata ----------------- Young
RVP
I'd like to see Di Maria in there somewhere too. I expect we may play on the counter a bit more than we have in recent months. would be harsh to drop anyone from that though, unless Rooney still plays up top, and Herrera, Fellaini and Di Maria make up the midfield 3.

We took a weakened side to the Emirates, and we both smashed it and grabbed it. We're gonna feck 'em.

Fellaini's so unbelievably inefficient in that role. Not good enough passing range and not far enough forward to be the target man and sneak into the box.

It just seems dumb to give away everything that's happening with the squad in a situation where Mourinho has probably spent all week thinking about a tactic that will stop us. When there's a chance he might go with Zouma alongside Matic or with the well known Bus then LvG shouldn't really say these things out if he doesn't want to face a non defensive and not nervous Chelsea.

He even says things like Rooney might play DM, why? Why not keep Jose guessing?

McNair in for Jones, Shaw for Blind, Herrera takes Carrick role, Mata his, Di Maria on the right wing and we maintain same formation/shape. But can see LVG trying to outsmart Mourinho so don't really know who to expect in line-up or what formation.

Awful news and timing.

AdM - Ander - Fella

I'd guess will be midfield, none of them are really super disciplined to take over Carrick's role but at least Ander is a tidy passer.

Massive uphill struggle however you lay the team out now. I just hope he keeps Rooney up front

This could work. I'd much prefer it to 3-5-2. If we play 3-5-2 there's no point in even watching the game, Chelsea will win by default.

That's why he said Rooney might play DM.

It's a pain for sure but if they have to be injured I'm glad it's for this game, reality is Chelsea could still beat us with our team from last week, it may also scupper Chelsea's game plan, I'm sure all week they've been working on how to counter what we did last week, the element of surprise may catch them out.

Also now it's a free roll of the dice for us now, everyone will now expect us to get best, the pressure to play well & score goals shifts to Chelsea, could just open up gaps that wouldn't be there if last weeks team played.

For me

Rooney for Carrick
Falcao for Rooney
Young for Blind
Di Maria for Young
McNair for Jones

I don't think we can keep the same tactics with this line up but then again:

Herrera Fellaini
Di Maria Mata Young
Rooney

Why not? It still looks very strong and decently balanced.

Well that sucks. I was actually really looking forward to the game too :(. With McNair or Blackett in I don't give us much hope to be honest. Smalling will effectively have to play as 1.5 CBs. I would drop Rooney into Fellaini's position, and Fellaini into Carrick's.

It seems to me that Van Gaal doesn't rate Fellani in midfield at all, hence Rooney playing there a lot this season and Van Gaal's comments about Rooney possibly playing there tomorrow.

Core of the team still there. What the hell is everyone so worried about? Man up. Chelsea have been playing shite for months now. They are without Costa - their main goal threat.

Rooney in deep MF role and RVP or Falcao up front. This game is most likely going to be a draw, and was always looking that way.

Probably something like this?
De Gea
Valencia - Smalling - Blackett - Shaw
Rooney
Ander - Fellaini
Mata - Falcao - Young

This is what I'd go for, it keeps the side as close to the other formation as possible. We're much weaker centrally obviously but we should still be strong in the wide areas with the Valencia/Herrera Mata trio intact and Fellaini/Young together still (I think Shaw will do fine behind them too).

There really isn't much else to do without switching up the entire lineup which I don't want to see happen.

Well I think I'd be much happier now if we get a draw. Nightmare timing considering how well we've played recently, do we know how long they'll all be out for? That could be more problematic. I hope he still keeps Rooney up top, maybe give Thorpe a shot at DM.
