Carrick, Blind, Jones, Rojo all out for the Chelsea game - What now?!

True, it’s like most people decided already he will not be ever good enough to replace Carrick.
Yep. He's come from Eredivisie at the end of the day. We need someone PL proven.

If Rooney or Fellaini have to play deeper we're instantly giving our back four significantly less protection than they're used to. In fact it's probably the least protection they'll have had all season. Away from home. Against the best team in the league. Oh and it isn't our first choice back four either. Two of them are missing. Just for shits and giggles.

In this context would it not make sense to replace Fellaini or Rooney with someone who's not going to spend most of the game on the deck, waving his hands in the air, or generally passing the ball to the opposition?

The really disappointing thing is that Di Maria had an insane work ethic in the big games I saw him in last year. If his confidence/attitude was right then I think he'd be able to put in a big shift in this type of scenario but as is there's a real debate as to whether we can afford to play him at all.

Injury crisis in defence and no cover for Carrick. Some things never change....

I hope the people who said we don't need another CB are taking note.....

We have a cover for Carrick but he injured himself, too.

And we don't need to had any CBs, we have 6 of them, and Mcnair will do what he is paid for. We should think about getting rid of our injury prone CBs and replace them, though.

Just because they dont stack injury prone players across their back line its hardly their fault

We've had most of these players available for the past few months. It's their luck that they are all out at this particular time, 4 new injuries is unexpected even at United, and these are all players we basically have for two positions on the pitch. They can replace each other at various positions (Rojo and Blind for left back, Jones and Rojo for center half, Blind and Carrick for defensive midfielder) but they cannot be replaced by anyone else (except Shaw who has been injured himself at left back).

Was I faulting them?

well you were saying they were lucky because of this. Moreover its us choosing to count on injury prone players and not for the first time in recent seasons having major bypass surgery needed for the odd games when the injuries pile up. I mean Fulham battered us under SAF with Carrick dropping into the defence. It happens...to us.

Complete and utter shite...

LB who hasn't played in 2 months
Inexperienced CB
No Holding midfielder
No Rooney up front if he plays midfield
Out of form old strikers if Rooney is in midfield
All this against Chelsea away...

I was confident before seeing this conference, but now I've a bad feeling.

Not just Rooney in midfield. He will potentially be playing DM.

Well he got hacked down by one of the worst tackles not to receive a red card seen in years.

It wasn't a dig at Blind, I was saying that we have the cover for Carrick but he sustained an injury too, people are talking about our CB depth when we still have 3 healthy CBs while we only have 2 center midfielders.

They might be playing Zouma the rookie as DM. We won a CL with Greening and aload of other dross playing. Rooney will be just fine
wherever he plays.

I really hope it's mind games.

Thats not likely 24hrs before kick off. Chelsea will have practiced against our likely formation/lineup all week. To tell fibs now on a friday to only play the usual bunch on Sat makes no difference does it.....

You don't think they are lucky that 3 players that were starting last week are now injured and so are their backups?

Chelsea have been very lucky lately. They've had winners against Hull, Stoke and QPR that were gifts from the opposition goalkeeper. In all of those games they were in danger of getting no points but have ended up with 9. Chelsea fans know this. It's really what makes champions. It's that extra bit of luck that's outside your control.

Carrick, Rojo or Blind aren't injury prone and Evans is still banned because the FA decided that spitting is on par with racism and headbutts.

How can Blind be injured from Kompany's tackle? Yes it was high but he didn't make a hard connection at all plus he played on afterwards. I hope its mind games but I don't think LVG does mind games.

I think this is why, whatever midfielder we do get in the Summer, must be able to play the 8 and 6 role. Defence isn't a problem, in terms of quantity, though.

Not so sure about Carrick, he's getting older and it does seem like he's been picking up more injuries than he used to, doesn't it? Or maybe that's just my imagination....

Has anyone ever thought this could be a monster 'mind games' by LVG. Didn't see anything to show that Rojo was injured against City. Carrick I can accept, maybe Jones too, but 4 seems a bit extreme.

I may be tempted to bring Rafael in at RB, and put Valencia next to Herrera in Midfield, leave the rest the same. Obviously Shaw for Blind, and maybe McNair if neither Rojo/Jones make it.

Well we were called lucky ourselves alot and still are. I dont really go for the luck excuse. They have Drogba up front....we have attacking options coming out of our arse better than him.

if wanna to maintain the current setup, the most straight forward replacement will be mcNair/blackett to partner smalling, shaw in for blind, rooney to drop down for carrick and falcao/rvp upfront.

if lvg dares to, and i hope so, try another formation he never plays this season: 343

mcNair, smalling, blackett, rooney at dip of the diamond, fellaini on tip, herrera & tony/young to be the pillars, falcao/rvp upfront, mata/januzaj on right, adm on left

Fellaini in his position has been more crucial to our form than Rooney in his so clearly we should keep Fellaini where he is, drop Rooney into midfield and put Falcao or RVP up front.

Sadly, I can't see us getting a good result with the defence we'll have to play.

I would be so disappointed if it turned out to be mind games. Since when does Manchester United need to hide their starting 11 from Chelsea in order to get an advantage?

I would find that much worse than having to play Chelsea with a lot of injured players

Why is everyone getting scared? Injuries are part of football, so, we have to deal with it. We still have enough attacking talent to paper over the injuries.

DDG, Valencia, Smalling, McNair, Shaw, Herrera, Fellaini, Rooney, Mata, Young, Falcao.
When have Chelsea had the equivalent sort of injuries? Like them having Terry, Cahill, Matic and Fabregas all injured at the same time and Zouma suspended - doesn't happen.

I'm not saying Rooney or Fellaini playing in DM is great I'm saying it's our only option, which it is.

Whoever moves leaves a space open in the front five positions. Moving Valencia there instead of Di Maria would be atrocious.

You also raise the point that it's not our first choice back four, yet you advocate moving one of the 2 fit defenders from our first choice back four into midfield in order to accommodate, who himself could be described as a defensive liability, and who hasn't played first team football for months.

I just don't get this level of Di Maria hatred.

Fair enough. I don't hate him. I just don't trust him. At all. Even when he's come off the bench in recent weeks we've started coughing up chances we weren't doing beforehand. It's got to a point where his mere presence on the pitch makes my ass clench (a la Van Gaal)

Anyhoo. I do think he'll come good eventually. Well, I do hope, anyway. Chelsea would be the perfect game to get me started on eating my words!

Personally we scored 4 against City and could have been more I'd try and keep the attack exactly as it is and come up with what we can at the back and in DM. We need to win really dont see a draw making or breaking our top 4 chances. The fallout of a weak Man Utd beating Chelsea this weekend is just what the dr ordered I'm still dreaming of a title charge.

Thats because their first choice are not injury prone. Look at Rafa our bench back up for Valencia. As injury prone as they come so the chances of needing a third choice behind him increases significantly over a full season. Its not luck...its probability.

We were lucky a lot. Take a look at the CL for example. You can't win that competition without it.

By luck I mean things that aren't of yours or anyone's control. Injuries, referee decisions, personal crisis with players etc.

I'm also not saying that Chelsea win this season because they are lucky. It's just they've been very lucky lately. They're coasting with the title instead of maybe having to deal with pressure form Arsenal or United.

This was not good news at all. I had braced myself to hear the worst about Carrick, but wasn't expecting so many injured players. This will surely interrupt our momentum. Shaw will obviously now play left back. You'd think McNair will be the centre back next to Smalling. And sadly Rooney will probably end up in midfield, meaning RVP or Falcao up front. My money would be on Falcao just because he's fitter at the moment. Not ideal at all.

Well I disagree they are coasting because we dropped 6 points against Swansea and further points against burnley at home and Southampton at home and the likes! Thats not bad luck for us nor good luck for them. Its poor play from us. Sometimes things go for you or against you but over a season it generally evens itself out. In terms of injuries to defenders it probably doesnt even itself out as we choose to continue with injury prone defenders in our team and squad. Simples.

Let's shove Valencia in DM and Rafael at RB.

I agree about our back four but Carrick, Blind and Rojo? I don't think they have been injury prone at all. The frustrating thing about this is that they all play or cover for the same positions and I think that's purely luck. I wouldn't be surprised if we went back to 3 at the back with Blackett and McNair flanking Smalling and midfield of Rooney, Herrera and Mata with Fellaini and Falcao up front.

I think Carrick has been pretty injury prone this season and in recent seasons. I think people are crying too much. I'd rather have what we come up with in defence over drogs as our main striker.....

PS..they aint scoring jack all these days against very weak teams!

Wuh.. Where's the white text? I CANT FIND THE WHITE TEXT!!

Is it possible Louis is just giving away this game to ensure maximum fitness for those four players for the lead up to Arsenal, probably the decisive match in the battle for second place, next month?

Carrick and Blind have put on a lot of miles on their legs in recent months. Rojo and Jones, not so much.

Win this and 2nd is much more likely!
