Carrick

Four central midfielders, in the proper Keane/Essien/Ince sense, with whiteside maybe more of a FMAM and Butch a FMDM.

On this point I think Gerrard is a classic CM player but has been hampered by Rafa's mistrust of his talent. So he shunted him up a bit.

I'd agree. The description central midfielder fits Robbo to a tee. There is a real difficult trying to fit Robson and Whiteside into a strict DM/AM type formula though. Robson was very similar to Keane/Ince/Essien but could also be a double figures from midfield player and was creative with his passing. Labelling him a DM just does not seem right as he was so well rounded but if you follow that classification you would have to as no one in their right mind would describe Whiteside as a DM.

Keano was a dm, one that did all that was required of his position and then did more, that was his genius, that what set him above.

Did you never watch Roy Keane playing or something? He was a box to box midfielder and generally controlled all our play. To categorise him as a defensive midfielder is absolutely ridiculous.

I did, that is why I identified his passing as the most important thing to replace and not his running, most people couldn't see beyond the latter.

I think you think it is a negative to call someone a dm, I don't

looks like between fletch, carrick, anderson and scholes we have four fit and on form midfielders for the remainder of the season.

Roy used to be everywhere on the pitch.

I think a lot of us considering him as a DM is because of his style of defending and getting into tackles.

The only one's that would categorise Keano as a Defensive Mid-fielder are the younger fans who only really saw him play a more holding role in his last few years, due to his injury problems & of course his inability to cover the same amount of ground as he used to!

He was the most complete box-box player i've ever seen since Robbo

Anderson, Fletch & Carrick are box-box players, they just needs to add/more goals to they game!

I think it might be because of the last season he played for us. That was a very different Keano than in his younger days.

I'm not by any means an old poster but I do remember Keano at his best ruling the midfield completely no matter where he was.His hip problems limited him and turned him into a sort of DM as you said

Apart from tackling, he was a great passer as well. His thuggish style disguised the fact that he was technically very good.

Add to that a decent shot from distance, good ability in the air, tireless engine, charisma and leadership, steely determination, and you have honestly one of the most complete midfielders you'll ever find.

This new generation, including Hargreaves will all bring parts of Keane in each of them, but taken as a whole none are close to his level yet.

And yet he wasn't close to Robbo.

Which makes you wish Robbo was around even more..

Utter bullshit. A proper DM is supposed to be able to snuff out danger all over the pitch. Win the ball at every opprtunity and constantly be able to supply the more attacking players of his team with the ball. On top of being the most vital cog in a team that links the midfield with the attack. Basically such a role is box to box. And Keane was the embodiment of that.

Honestly the person who invented the fecking stupid idea that defensive midfielders are limted players and that their role is only involves protecting the back 4 deserves to be pumped full of lead.

I think there is much confusion over the defensive and holding midfielder. I think people became obsessed by the type of midfielder Makalele was and every fan thought their team needed one.

Keane was definately box to box. Makelele was dm.

Anyway carrick 3 goals this season :) Great goal though. Hopefully he'll get a few more before the season ends
