Carrick's Last Game?

He's also vice-captain of the club... that's why he lifted the trophy.

I don't think it had anything to do with him leaving.

Yep - look at how what he got out of 'finished' players like Lampard, Terry and Drogba...can't see him being let go.

I hope you are wrong

Really can't see it anymore with Carrick, slows the game down immensly and the quality of his passing is not what it used to be anymore. For me he is finished and he should be leaving.

Together with Mata the first name on the list of players that can go out

He's finished as a first choice player but depending on reinforcements, he could do a job as a squad player - if we were loaded with good players, I'd agree but we're not in the position where we can throw away experienced players unless better ones come in. To a degree I think Carrick has always been that type of player - surround him with players that can take on the burden of creating/scoring goals and he can do a job...I think our lack of players who can do them things 'hangs him out to dry'. Not that he's not past it but I think he still has some value.

nah just dgaf about those posts, trying to wum to attract attention.
Not at all. Despite the fact that he has a lot of fans here, the plain simple fact is that he has done bugger all for the past two seasons and more - and done it with a calmness and nonchalence worthy of a master. People say he's hard done by because he doesn't have the players around him to do the neccessary work. That's ridiculous, quite frankly. If he was half the player you lot think he is he wouldn't need players around him to carry him. His fans used to point to his stellar (ultra-safe, unambitious) pass success rate and use that to justify his place in the starting eleven considering the dearth of key passes, assists, tackles or goals - or any other worthy contribution. Now there is nothing. He almost always plays the safe pass. Even so, his pass success rate these past two seasons has been poor. He has struggled to make it into the top 22 on whoscored's overall ratings - let alone the top 11. He's a has been and I for one am hoping we don't have to carry him anymore. People complain about our slow build-up. There is no bigger culprit responsible for that than Carrick. So - I say again - good riddance.

He's been great over the years but not been very good recently. Deserves a decent send off but I'd like to see him replaced with real quality. That's why we've struggled of late because we're just hanging on to mediocrity and hoping for the best. Our first 17 should be brimming with youth and real talent...players that when you look at the team sheet, you'd think yeah they could walk into any team. We don't have that at the moment and that's why we are where we are.

Van Gaal was applauded for trimming the 'deadwood' but unfortunately bar Martial, replaced them with more mediocre players. We have a team full of mediocre players and players like Carrick coming to their natural end. I hope Mourinho does a proper shake up this time and gets some real talent to complement the great youth that we have.

Sorry Carrick, it's time for you to go!

I can remember when we signed him in the summer of 2006. I thought 'This isn't the type of player we need to be bringing in to compete with Chelsea'.

With the benefit of hindsight, I can now concede that Fergie probably had a better idea of what the team needed at the time than I did.

Always had great positional sense, covered the defence well, and knew where to be to make interceptions and break up attacks; had a good passing radar; was always calm and composed, even at a young age; and scored the odd belter (his goals against Roma in 2006 and QPR in 2011/12 stick in the mind).

An understated, underrated midfielder, who quietly went about being one of the most successful of his generation, and a regular starter for one of the best United teams of all time (the 2006-2013 vintage).

There was a period circa 2009-2012 when he used to get absolutely slated. Not just by neutrals and ABUs, but by some United fans as well. I never understood this, because his importance to that team was there for all to see. He was the lynchpin.

Still, if he does retire or move on, he will do so with a big bag full of winners medals, and some even bigger bags full of money.

Being Michael Carrick must be alright.

I think Jose'd be willing to keep him, but the way Carrick has acted in our last 2 games, bringing his children out with him, holding the cup with Rooney, suggest that he's most likely done. I'm not sure if he'll retire or just go somewhere else like America or China, but it seems unlikely he'll be playing at United next season. A United legend regardless.

Oh yeah, my mistake. Either way, he deserves a testimonial just as much as players like Beckham, Rio etc. Very underrated and under-appreciated by United fans, and football fans in general.

Oh i agree definitely deserves a testimonial.

Nice. Well said.

It's a crime he didn't play for England too often just so they could fit in the superstar midfielders. Just like Scholes.
