We have the largest wage bill in the PL according to the Daily Mail yesterday. Its larger than Citehs. The wage bill is by far the best way to judge if the owners are prepared to spend money or not. This narrative is so tiring.
Nothing about signing Gary Cahill would be perfect for us. Luckily there are people at the club who would never allow a deal like that to happen.
I beg to differ. Its pretty evident that unless Mou makes it to top 4 then he'll be out. On the other hand the owners wouldn't want a disgruntled employee shifting all the blame on them. Cahill will give Mou the typical experienced defender he had been asking for without us spending ridiculous amounts of money for it. This will allow us to spend the real money in the summer.
For me its two different arguments/discussions what one thinks should be done and what one thinks Mourinho will do. These two arguments should be kept separate more often here to prevent unnecessary discord.
Me for example thinks that bringing Cahill in now in January would be a fecking disaster and I really dont ever want to see that happen. For so many reasons.

Why would we buy a player with the sole intention of pacifying a manager who won't be here in 6 months? It would be stupid and indulgent.
We should be planning for the next manager, not making his task more difficult. If the right player comes along in January and the circumstances are right, sign him. If not, don't waste a penny more on this failing manager and wait for the summer window.
I'd rather we go for Brazilian Alex. he's only 36 or Gallas as he has experience
His built speaks for itself I guess. Safe for positional mistakes he doesn't lose headers and it's impossible to bully him, I think some commentator mentioned that he's leading the league in terms of "defensive duels won %". He's also relatively quick for someone his size. I'd say he's decent on the ball as well. Not exactly someone who dribbles into the first pressing line, but he seems entirely unimpressed when opponents try to pressure him during build-up and I've seen him play some very good penetrating passes this season.
He's made some naive errors this season, giving away a penalty against Berlin and he was lucky to avoid another one the following game.
I think the talent is there to be a very good cb, all he needs to do is mature more and perhaps work a bit on his agility, but he's already a fairly decent CB, who seems to have little trouble keeping Toprak out of the team.

If it's a quick short term fix, then Godin in January with a scoring right winger. Then spend big in the summer.

What you really want to see is if they are willing to invest at championship contending levels or simply settle for top 4 trophy. That we did nothing to close the gap with citeh last summer hints at the latter.

Sure why not. Mendy was 23 when city signed, so after 5 years he will be around 30 and they will sign young LB. After all players are done at 28. On the other hand we have to back manager and sign 29-30 year old players for big money. Amazing logic and consistency.
Ok so Mendy is 28yrs - it is still same question: extend older player or buy younger one. The extension is still the cheaper option.
never understood why people make things up. At no point have I advocated for buying older players (except in the case of a CB) and repeatedly criticized buying Matic and Sanchez. I have also said that you can back a manager by addressing the needs he has identified and dont need to buy only the players he has on his original list.

Matic and Sanchez are just 30yrs when we got them and we can all see how that has worked out. No. Your point that extension of young is cheaper than signing Mendy was not correct. Signing 28 year old is different from signing 23 year old and then extending his contract when he is 28. Extending Young's contract means we will have to sign replacement in 2 years, so obviously extending Young's contract costs more to the club.
Mendy will give 10 years of service. Young at max will give 2, then signing one more LB for next 8 years. Yeah go on and do the math.
Won't be surprised if your next post is how club wants young for next 10 years.
No its cheaper for the club over the same period of time cos they would have gotten 2 more years before incurring the expense of the new signing. You cannot say Mendy would give 10yrs while the new LB is limited to giving only 8 yrs. if we sign mendy today and keep for 10yrs, we would need to sign a new player in 10yrs but if we sign a new player 2yrs from now, the replacement would not be needed till 12yrs from now.
To illustrate, we can look at the financial cost over 20yrs with 50m transfer and 5m salary
1. Extending for 10 yrs means you only need to sign 2 players to cover 20yrs = 100m transfer + 20*5m salary= 200m
2. Buy new every 5yrs gives 200m transfer + 20*5m salary = 300m
Of course you can make some adjustments for salary increases but it is unlikely to match the additional transfer costs.
Thus is one of the majn reasons you keep players for longer periods cos the total cost of ownership is spread over the same period is less. The more frequently i replace my matured players the higher my costs.
It is only not true if I am a ' selling club' and pick younger unknowns to groom and sell at peak value but that is a different model that has a higher failure rate.

I am torn about Godin. He is a damn good player still and used to playing in a lowblock defence at Atletico. If Mourinho had gone for him two years ago and not bought Lindelöf and Bailly I would have been all for it.
Now it would be a stop-gap solution that would cement Godin and Smalling in our central defence as long as Mourinho stays and most likely force a player like Bailly out.
Maybe if we were fighting for the league and with a realistic possibility to win the CL, it might be a good idea. Now I lean to that it would just stop us from addressing the CB-position next summer long-term.
And then he needs to want to come as well, we reportedly met his release clause last summer and he said no.
