Champions League Round of 16 (12th Feb - 13th Mar)

It also shows the current rules are absurd and need serious work, because if that kind of incident is genuinely a valid penalty then that is pure insanity, as far as I'm concerned. Especially if that is going to be applied PL wide next season.

Yep, I'd agree with that. It was a handball under the rules but the rules suck. Though tbf handball is a tricky offence, I'm not sure what interpretation you could have that wouldn't involve some controversial grey area.

Deserved for Porto. Congratulations @broccoli honorable club with no petrodollars only hardworking people. How many suspended players?

I really cannot believe Roma didn't get a penalty there. That was the only that was clear from all three tonight.

That wasn't the part of your post I was taking issue with.

Your stupidly cocky "people saying don't turn your back have never played the game" comment is what I bolded.

You shouldn't turn your back, but it happens. I'm pretty sure Rio did it on a number of occasions, everyone will sometimes do it, people acting like 'oh he turned his back so it's a penalty' are people I have to question whether they've actually played the game.

Kimpembe's made a little error, but it doesn't deserve to be punished in that way. The poster I quoted made out that him turning his back was enough to justify the decision.

We could most definitely beat Tottenham and Ajax. We would have a chance against Liverpool/Bayern.

We can be much better than what we showed against PSG.

I agree you can be much better than you were against PSG.

What may work in United’s favor is that anything from here on out is just icing on the cake. They can maybe play a little more freely because of it.

A quarter final against Porto, Ajax or Spurs is an absolute joy. They could all beat us, but you’d sign for any of them and the other two to be paired in your side or the draw.

Refs are there to apply the rules of the game not decide which rules are right or wrong. The rules for handball have been made more strict, therefore it's a penalty. Refs making up their own rules leads to the shambles that is Michael Oliver.

Sometimes referees have to use common sense and be practical with the rules though.

Regardless, I think the rules on handball need some looking at, because any fan of a team who conceded a penalty like that would be rightly furious.

There are no sides of the draw anymore.

Ridiculous week of football.

I was at the Madrid - Ajax game last night (as a tourist but willing Ajax on), thinking Madrid had it in the bag. It was beautiful to see the youngsters of Ajax perform like that at such a superb stadium.

I left the Bernabeau thinking what might be for our club this evening against PSG. Make no mistake about it we took great confidence from last nights result.

Superb game management from Ole, superb performance from our players too. Superb all round. Would like Porto in the next round! We’re due a decent draw surely?

What exactly is stopping kimpembe from tucking his arm in there? He leaves it wide. Stupid and yes, penalty

Meanwhile in Oporto, Cakir steals the show once again

Honorable club my ass. You must of drank too much tonight surely. They are just as rotten as our neighbors.

Out of the four teams to have won the first leg, only Tottenham made it through.

What a weird couple of days

Funnily tucking your arm in would actually be the unnatural thing to do as nobody jumps like that. But it seems that what players will have to do in the future.

You can always draw the tree in hindsight. Point is you’d take any of those three as your QF opponent and either of the other two as your SF one.
Eh? There’s a new draw after the QFs. So even if you get Ajax and it’s Tottenham-Porto, you could still end up against the winner of Atletico-Barca.

I’m not sure what’s more shocking, United getting through or PSG conspiring to throw it away again.

Rio Ferdinand just said he doesn't think it's a penalty at all.

You should never turn your back in general if you can help it, but in some circumstances it will happen, and shouldn't be as harshly punished as it has been because there's zero intent there and his arms are not outstretched enough.

It's an incredibly, incredibly harsh penalty to give.

The fact is he gave the ref a decision to make through his own inept technique.

You cannot allow your arm to dangle freely away from your body inside the penalty box and you absolutely cannot turn your back. It was a penalty under the letter of the law.

Unlike you I don’t see football as black and white. Yes what they have done on European football since Pedroto was their coach is more than honourable?

Do I like Pinto da Costa? Not much, but at least he defends his club.

I know what I am saying don’t need to drink to state the obvious.

Do a 180 jump and see how your arm goes.
