Charlottesville

So black people can be just as racist as white people can?

Yes they can and some are as bad as white supremacists. But the actual consequences are linked to the society you live in and who represents the majority.

'just as racist' no.
White people have the power to deny black people jobs, homes, funding etc.

But sure, black people can call white people racial names too.

Yeah agreed. If a black person called me a racist name, it would roll off my back a lot easier than the other way around I think. It wouldn't mean anything to me, and it wouldn't really have the power to affect me.

Precisely, plus a lot of racial slurs against people of colour have a history behind them that carries more weight as well.

That says everything about the legacy of racism: the historically-justified assumption that black people have no power to affect.

There's a context there, definitely, which means the dynamic will never be the same. Even so when it comes to the argument of white privilege, I tend to think humans are a lot more complex than that at an individual level.

Yeah racism is really about power relations. The ability to wield power over others breeds a kind of contempt for the weaker party.

I'm not sure snide throwaway comments help much you know.

Racism has the same power and abilities to ruin lives in every way possible regardless of the colour of the racist.

Not really, at macro social level the problem can be institutional and in that case the colour of the racist matters. Though you are right if we look at things at an individual level.

What snide comment did I make?

And racism has multiple levels - everybody can be racist on an individual level. In the western world only white people wield the power to inflict institutional & systemic racism - which has the ability to ruin lives for many generations, and is not comparable to individual racism at all.

Just don't get the American far-right's bitching (apart from trying to get attention to garner more support). Facing the consequences of bigotry doesn't equate to having your views suppressed. That should be evident. The cost to the public purse of the Charlottesville rally alone must be massive and yet it was allowed to go ahead.

That's exactly how it should be done.

Perhaps in Germany it works because right wing extremists don't actually have the right to say whatever they want, are closely watched by authorities and have zero political power?

Liberals really do live in a bubble, blissfully unaware of the world around them. Thing is, they personally don't feel threatened by right wingers, so they don't really mind them that much, as long as illusions of status quo and 'free speech' are intact.

Liberals live in a bubble....dont talk shite

You're all missing Life of Kylie, you know.

 I hope so, chief.

No, sure you weren't. Just a coincidence you're going over the same shit in the same thread.

Yes, the president of the united states has pandered to nazi apologists in the last few days, and because it's a thread on the same issue.

Why would you think I was talking about you?

Won't stop all the nazi apologists from generalising all counter protesters as antifa though.

I'm just wondering why you seem incapable of getting beyond the Antifa thing in particular.

Because the president has emboldened nazi apologists to claim anyone who protests the nazis is antifa or 'alt-left'. So it's important to show evidence that the majority of those who are countering these guys aren't doing it with violence, and therefore not antifa.

Someone had to die...but, this really has given this a real impetus.

UT removing their last remaining statues.

Only an idiot would believe that. The only 'Nazi apologists' are the Nazis themselves, and their opinions aren't worth shit.
