Chelsea 2016/17 - Very Content

I'm gonna make a bold prediction here and say that Conte will fail to get consistent results and he will be sacked by December.
Come on, it's Chelsea. They sacked managers who won them the CL by December. It's not bold at all.

Chelsea are my favourites to win the league. Under-performed by a mile last season thanks to Mourinho. it was obvious Hiddinck got them slightly back on track and with new players, a new highly rated manager and returning confidence they will be tough to beat to the title, no Euro football only enhances that. When other contenders are playing 2-3 games a week Chelsea will, for most of the season, have a week between games to field fresh and confident teams week in week out.
Which manager has won the league in his first season in England?

Courtois

Zouma Terry Cahill

Cuadrado Matic Fabregas Willian Azpiciaokcallceuta

Hazard Costa

this?

Jose, Pellegrini.
Pellegrini's was a fluke. Jose has won it, yet somehow Conte is favorite to win it this season even though he is ill prepared due to Euro commitments and Chelsea need to get used to a new system. Also, they haven't uprooted any trees in the transfer window yet.

No, maybe it's not Spurs. Some Euro/WC winning coach came to england with a lot of fanfare and got fired after 6 months. :wenger: Or it happened while I was playing Football manager, one of which.

It's either Scolari and he's confused Spurs with Chelsea, or it could possibly be Jacques Santini, who was appointed Tottenham manager before heading to the Euros with France. I remember during the Euros the joke was Spurs appointed him to get them playing like France, but instead he was getting France to play like Tottenham.

Yes. Santini. Him. At that time, wasn't he one of the best coaches in France and got France playing well, but then declared he'll join Spurs before Euro 2004 even began, and many football pundits attributed that to his declaring the decision before the tournament itself? Some how I have convinced myself that France won 2004 and he was replaced by Terry Venables, when it was big Martin Jol.

Sorry, that was a clusterfeck of a dream I had.

Conte isn't favorite to win it. They're like 3rd or 4th favorites at best.

Completely agree with you. I was responding to the post quoted above where he is touted as the favorite.

It's our first friendly tomorrow, away to Rapid Vienna (5pm kick off on Chelsea TV).

Hopefully some of the younger guys impress Conte.

I don't actually think they will get into the top 4. I think they may fall short again.

In my opinion, Spurs will prove a lot of people wrong and get back in. The 2 Manchester teams will and Arsenal will

Crazy how not everyone agrees with you on a public forum! Who'd have thought... :boring:
Haha. Well everyone is entitled to an opinion but the dolt who took me to task then embarrassed himself but trying to quote history ... and getting it 100% wrong. Build a case by all means, but (inaccurately) using history and the latest odds from the bookies as his idea of refuting my opinion is inane to say the least :D

Any news on potential departures? On the purchase of Kante, links have arisen that Matic could be on his way out. Willian signed a new deal recently, and it looks like Hazard is fine for the time being. Has Courtois finishing throwing his toys out the pram with the goalkeeping coach? Costa is the only other one I've seen linked with a move away, back to Atletico in particular.

Costa has come out and said he is 100% staying. I imagine Conte will want a proper look at the whole squad before making decisions. January/next summer will be where departures will happen.

Predictions - He will struggle in the first 6 months while he figures out the PL and tried to teach the players 3-5-2. He will realise that it isn't particularly suited to the PL and switch to a diamond to increase his goal threat, but will concede too many playing diamond and it will make his ass twitch but he will scrape fourth.

After that he will differ from LVG because I think he will ultimately be a success and adapt. Probably switching to a 4-2-3-1 but I can also see a successful 4-4-2 being deployed. I don't think you have the squad to challenge at the moment though, but I think the top 4 will be back next season, with Arsenal maybe missing out to Spurs if Poch can keep up his good work.

I bet we start the season with a back 4. He won't even try a back 3/5.

Unless we sign one hell of a CB like Bonucci (not happening) there is no way we're playing Terry in a back 3. Conte isn't suicidal tactically.

You may well be correct, but purely from a football fans point of view, I hope you do. I really like the nuances of 3-5-2 and would absolutely love to see it done successfully in the PL. Not sure if you have the players for 3-5-2 (who would be the wing-backs?) but If anyone can make it work it is Conte. I had high hopes for us playing it under LVG but... well it kinda sucked didn't it.

4-4-2/4-3-3 seems likely.

Fabregas may be on the chopping block though.

Kante signing done for less than 30m.
Could turn out to be a steal, maybe he won't be able to replicate the form of the last season?

Don't see why there wouldn't be room for Fabregas in a 4-4-3

If he does go for a 4 in the middle with no Fabregas wouldn't it be creatively limited with Kante and Matic as a partnership?

We've signed Batshuayi who I've read is most effective in a two striker setup and are heavily linked with another expensive striker signing. I'm almost convinced that we'll be playing with two up top.

With Kante they're immediately back on the map. They were a bit average in the middle. If they actually sign Kante and offload Fabregas to us, they've played a blinder.

Great signing for them. Bit gutted we missed out to be honest, brilliant player. Probably would have preferred him to Pogba even this summer in terms of the impact he can have on the team and overall consistency from us. We'll see what happens with Matic now that Kante is there. Does United sign him? To Juve and United signing Pogba? Only thing for sure is they'll be up there at the top for sure, with no european football.

Delightful signing for them. I'd have preferred him over Pogba.
