Chelsea 2017/18 thread - FA Cup Champs, League chumps

I’m frustrated by the lack of ambition from this club. We’ve had a world class player in Hazard for almost 5 seasons but just have two PL titles to show for it. Not to mention Hazard has hardly had an impact in the CL which may in his mind affect his legacy.

Being frustrated is one thing but how would losing our best player help?

2/5 PL titles is good going. Such a competitive league with a lot of money between the top clubs. Bear in mind Hazard has not been the only world class player in the league over those years.

It being a wake up call for the board. I used to have this train of thought, as I feel bad for Hazard. He's been kicked to shit for years now with almost no help, he deserves better. But by selling Hazard, I fear the club's policy of selling before buying is only reinforced and would not deter them from continuing in this way.

And with little investment, we as fans feel it could've/should've been more.

Feel bad for Hazard? He's won the league twice in 3 years and is a multi millionaire.

As for a wake up call for "the board" (just say Abramovic, its all down to him), he knows exactly what he is doing. Fans whining about him not spending enough is laughable.

Too much negativity, guys.

The club just published financial figures for 2016/2017. We make 15M profit for last year. Yes, it was helped by 70M profits of selling players but we were also missing Champions League money and the Nike deal (60M/year) only start from this season.

These figures show: the most important thing we have already tood on our own feet. We are being an europe elite club and living by our own revenue. We, as fans, all know this movement years ago. It's great!

Secondly, the club didn't hide its money earned or just save it in the bank. We did spend the money. We need some profits as there is FFP which the club is always ready to meet.

Lastly, we can estimate our transfer budget. May be right, may be wrong. Just make a guest hah?

Last season our revenue was 360M with 15M profit. Without 70M profit in players sale we would have lost 55M (operating loss).

Next season the expected revenue is around 450M. This means we are planning to have operating profit of 450M - 360M - 55M = 35M in 2017/2018.

This plus any player sales after 30.06.2017 (the financial year starts there) are probably our transfer budget this season. So far it is 35M (planned operating profit above) + 55M (Costa sale) + 40M (Matic sale) + 20M (other young players sale or loan fees) = 150M

This: the club is ready for 150M spend. Of course this number can be added if there are more players sales (Luiz, Willian, Pedro ... there are many rumours).

The record profits are good and the club will have more money to spend than ever with the Nike deal. My biggest annoyance is that we seem to be the only big, super rich club that appears hell bent on adhering to FFP rules when clubs like City and PSG don't seem bothered by them at all and spend literally whatever it takes to get the players they want.

We need to have a transfer window where we spend huge on top quality next summer. We need to add quality to what we already have rather than what we've done the last few years. This 1 in, 1 out policy can work in a season where we were primarily focused on only a single competition and can maintain a small squad. This past summer we didn't get worse, the others around us just got better.

Both City and PSG are earning around 80M more than us annually as they have deals from Arab and Qatar state-owned companies. Our biggest sponsors are international brands like Nike, Yokohama (feck it I have to google their name:lol:) or Carabao. Thus our sponsor money are lesser but more sustainable (and more legit I am dare to say).

For me it’s not about spending big. We have to start buying smart again.

Need to identify the next De Bruyne’s and Kante’s, less about throwing money around and more about buying the correct players that can fit the style of play we want. Courtois, Azpi, Christensen, Rudiger, Kante, Hazard, And Morata will probably be the backbone of this team for the next few years. I just hope we can get the right personnel around them.

Hows he any better than RLC?

Honestly, I'll be fecking pissed off if we are indeed still after Barkley. It would be flushing money down the toilet. Not only does he not get into our current midfield, he also takes a spot that RLC could fill next summer.

Just stinks of a club target rather than a Conte one.

Yeah reading twitter and other sites, most Chelsea supporters are against this.

Atleast there's good news on the lb front as Alex Telles might sign soon.

Yes that’s exactly what I meant, I feel bad for him because he makes so much money and plays football for a living. Or ya know, the fact he’s the most talented player the club’s ever had and for most of his tenure at the club, we’ve played the “give the ball to him and hope he does something with it” tactic. He’s never had someone able to take a good portion of the burden off his shoulders with dross like Willian, Oscar, Pedro, Ramires and Schurrle. There was really only Mata in the beginning and Fabregas a little bit now.

And how is it laughable to criticize Roman for not spending? He’s spent a Pedro in the last 7 windows. After never fully replacing the spine of Roman’s “first generation”. For a club who’s supposed to have ambition.

That 150m figure isn’t including the fees spent for Morata, Rudiger, Zappacosta, Drinkwater and Bakayoko though, right? So it’s much less?

Have you seen RLC playing for Palace? There’s really nothing to get excited about. At least Barkley is capable of doing some good things, RLC isn’t even good at anything and atm is shite in the final third. Throw some Conte magic dust on Barkley and hope he’s elevated to another level. My only problem would be is if he comes to sit on the bench like Drinkwater.

He is
 spanish champions, 1 minute from winning CL, better players top to bottom -decent but not to be feared

Did you watch the tie? Because they looked so so vulnerable and Mourinho refused to do anything but sit deep. One of the most frustrating matches to watch and something that really made me resent Mourinho for not going for it.

You bang on! but lets hope we get that figure anyway

I quite like Barkley. The guy is capable of shooting which is badly needed in our current midfielders. His dribbling is good and he's quick too.

Willian was excellent today (which is nice because he's been irritating me lately), but overall we were actually pretty lackluster. The scoreline didn't in any way represent our performance. Morata desperately needs to rest up properly after his injury, but we just can't rely on Batshuyi at the moment.

Hardly lacklustre, 12 shots on target, rested key players and generally played within ourselves from the 25th minute onwards after what has been a busy festive period. The only thing the scoreline didn't reflect was the total domination we had this afternoon.

Given the opponent and the schedule (and the blistering first 10m) it makes sense that we didn't go all guns blazing. There's just been an off-ness about us recently that I find a bit worrying.

Kante sums it up for me, he's been mis-hitting passes for a couple of games now, which from him is really odd. They're probably just getting tired though.

Barkley will be brilliant, watch. I honestly think we have missed him more than Lukaku this season. We simply can't keep the ball in the opposition half without him. I'd love to see him play for us one more game before he leaves to prove to all the dickheads who have helped push him out how good he actually is.

I think the spine has been replaced just fine. Courtois, Azpi, Kante, Hazard and Costa/Morata are very much up there with the predessesors for me, the difference between the 15/17 title winning teams and the 05/06/10 ones is the players around the spine, Carvalho, Ash, 08-10 Ivan, Essien, Robben/Anelka, J.Cole are streets ahead of Cahill, Alonso, 13 onwards Ivan, Matic/Baka and Willian. The only support player that for me is on a level with those previous is Pedro.

Chelsea have gone under the radar recently, and they have an easy run of fixtures coming up. They don't play Arsenal until the 3rd of January.

Atletico (H) Champions League
West Ham (A)
Huddersfield (A)
Southampton (H)
Bournemouth (H) League Cup
Everton (A)
Brighton (H)
Stoke (H)
Arsenal (A)

We're preoccupied with chasing City, but they have to like their chances of leapfrogging us if we slip at all during the Xmas season.
Good call, bro.

Hardly, the point i was making that Conte didn't have to say and act some of the things he did in public, after all, by doing that he is as good as telling half the squad they ain't good enough, maybe they ain't but saying that in public is hardly going to boost confidence. There's ways to express discontent and in my opinion he went about it all wrong, doesn't mean i want him out, all thing's considered he is the happiest i have been with a manager since Jose the first time.
After the way he propelled Chelsea to be champions in his very first season in England with the club in post 10th place turmoil and the board not backing Conte in the transfer market, he has every right to voice his displeasure. His complaints has always been the size of the squad and never about certain players not being good enough. No current player would take that as they not being good enough.

The strong market rumours regarding Chelsea going after Ross Barkley truly disgusts me. The board is going after Barkley just because he is cheap and English. Total waste of space for another mediocre player who makes no improvement to t the team whatsoever.

So? Chelsea are English champions and actually won the CL fairly recently, as for Atletico having better players top to bottom - really? We were comfortably better than them over two games at the group stage and match up well against them, both on paper and on the pitch.

So while I'm not saying it will happen it does look off a few sources now that we are interested in Vidal.(Sports bold, Tancredi)

I think it will more likely be barkley.

What do you guys think?

I personally think he and a LWB would be great for us in this window. If it' Alex Sandro I can understand us cheating out or not focusing primarily on a striker. But if we had someone like Bertrand or telles no reason we couldn't get a decent back up striker also.

I would be surprised if there is another player bought besides Barkley.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if no one was bought hence you can forget about left wing backs etc let alone Alex Sandro. No way the club will spend anywhere remotely close to 50 million pounds for Sandro or any player - I consider the Morata purchase to be a one off desperate move as Conte was making a lot of noise at that time after missing out on Lukaku.

Conte's latest comments clearly shows that he's pissed off with the Board looking at players without giving much consideration of Conte's opinion hence he can't be bothered speaking with agents anymore by changing his phone number.

As I said before, FECK THE BOARD! Hope Conte walks out this summer for the sake of his own dignity and worthiness.

Morata
Hazard
Sandro/Vidal/Fabregas/Kante/any one of us who post on here
Rudiger/Christensen/Azpi
Courtois

That's a pretty strong team. Sell Willian in the summer, let Barkley take his place in the team. Maybe start phasing Pedro out next season if Musonda shows the goods. That'd be a team worthy of challenging City. Now we could end up not getting Sandro and Vidal while Hazard and Courtois are headed back to Spain. Can't wait to see what happens. I've wanted Vidal since he was Leverkusen - can't believe it's been 7 years.

By the way Drinkwater's performance against Stoke?! His long range passing was OUTSTANDING. IDK what he has to do to get Bakayoko's minutes, but I've been very impressed with him. Hope he gets to play today.

Vidal isn't as good as his Juve days. And Barkely is bang average.

Glad Arsenal equalized at the end after Hazard flopped like he was shot in the face to get that penalty.

We need an alternative to Morata. Bats is done and I have no idea who we should sign.
No striker will be signed in January. Probably some cheap and shitty unknown last minute striker will be signed in the summer - emphasis on cheap.
