Chelsea 2017/18 thread - FA Cup Champs, League chumps

Ivanovic, Mikel, Oscar, Terry all needed to go. I believe Oscar was the only who's contract wasn't running out anyway. Chalobah came out and said the club were going to have him go out on loan and he was tired of that. Ake I wish we kept but people are saying there's a buy back clause. Matic looked done for 2 years.

I wish Mourinho kept his word about playing youth. Conte seems uninterested in even rotating the squad let alone playing youth.

Playing young players at Chelsea is mission impossible. Simple reason, managers gets sacked so easily so it's not the risk worth taking for any coach.

Surely the likes of Boga & Musonda can provide depth this year? Obviously you risk stuning their developments by time being on bit-part players but if more injuries happen than expected then they could get a good run of games?

I was surprised they sold Ake, a quality versatile player.

They'll fight for 4th position this season.
Hazard can carry them to 4th if he stays fit. I also think Morata will be a good player.

They're a good side with a good manager, we shouldn't underestimate them.

Morata is an unknown though. He's never been a first choice striker at any club he's been at so he has no experience of playing a full season for 90mins each game. He's only ever been used as a squad player and impact sub. If they do sell Costa then they'll be in a situation where they have no striker with any genuine experience and that will be their undoing.

Hazard is the only player they really have left who I would consider a threat offensively. Also, not only are they changing their first team but they're also going to have far more games this year with Europe. It's not like last Season when they were fresh for each game, this time round they'll be laboured and will have to utilise their squad effectively. I don't see them having enough offensive threats to be a genuine issue this season.

Mourinho had full support of the board, was given the time, had opportunities to, AND had reason to when the vets downed tools for him.

No way any manager is going to get time at Chelsea.

Oh Chelsea,
You are the girl
for a not so messy
One year stand,
la la la la la.

There is a high chance that Conte might walk - like he did with Juventus. It's clear that selling Matic to United was not his decision and they haven't adequately replaced Diego Costa as well.

To be honest, they have been pretty underwhelming for a club who has won the title and are getting back into the CL as well. Their squad looks wafer thin (specially the midfield) and Conte doesn't have control over the transfers. Something miraculous needs to happen between now and end of August for them to be favourites again.

Underwhelming in what? We've not played a proper fecking game yet!

Transfer market. Sorry should have mentioned it explicitly. Also, you have played a proper game - the Community Shield final - and lost.

No way any manager is going to get time at Chelsea.

Mourinho had time despite not even trying to fix the problem. He lasted all the way until a week before Christmas. We were 17th almost halfway through the season. Do you disagree with that?

That has nothing to do with my point. Manager wins the league and gets sacked if they don't win next. That's the reason why Chelsea managers rarely trust young players. Forget Jose, you had so many coaches and everyone followed the same route.

You said no way ANY manager gets time at Chelsea. I'm telling you Jose did. He didn't just get sacked at the end of September, as if the rug was pulled out from under him. He had time, and was our only hope for youngsters to get time. You're right about every one else.

Abramovich is splitting from his wife. Sounds amicable, but maybe a costly divorce.

Community shield "final"? Ha! It's a friendly.

The transfer window has not closed yet either.
It's not a friendly at all. You are saying so as you lost.

Also, I mentioned in my post that they need to do something miraculous from here on in the transfer window to be considered favourites for the title.

I'm with Duffer until the end of the transfer window we will not know the true state of affairs. Our first team is still strong and its sum of parts is stronger than individual players so we can punch above our weight with Conte's drilling.

If Conte walks (which he likely might) we will know it before the end of the window.

Collecting shit from the market like drinkwater, candreva etc might extend his stay by a few months but I would still bet on him to be the first mnager to get the sack this season.

Horrible horrible transfer window. We still need to land a reliable striker, two wingbacks and a midfielder.

Totally agree. That's just a coping mechanism for the losing fans really. Anyone who says otherwise is deluding themselves.

Its always been a proper game (especially since its generally played among two rivals). Not to mention its a huge indicator of early season form.

I don't get it, even with pedro, hazard and bakayko back, they're still so incredibly short in numbers. How have they let themselves be thinned out so much?

Awful team. Walk the plank Conte!

Getting rid of Costa (not yet), Chalobah and Matic. Rather than adding numbers to the squad they've just replaced players. However apparently Chalobah/Matic both really pushed for a transfer. They should be signing 2 players though.

...wtf is happening

I had a feeling this year was gonna be rough, I told a Chelsea mate at work that Conte will walk before the end of the season.

The Chelsea team should still be good enough to beat Burnley at home. The thin squad is what is expected to affect them over the length of a full season.

It's the red card that's brought that depth into question, but more important is the fact that they're actually down to 10 men. Before that they were fairly comfortable and wearing Burnley down.

That's 3 red cards in Chelsea's last 3 FA competitive matches... poor stuff.

fecking pissed myself at Chelsea's official twitter timeline.
