Chelsea 2017/18 thread - FA Cup Champs, League chumps

I'm loving this new version of Chelsea, buying average players like Zappacosta, Drinkwater and Barkley. To be fair, Barkley will most likely be good business, as he was cheap as chips, and he clearly has potential. His issues have always been fitness related and managers not really finding his best position. Zappacosta is an ok squad option I suppose but Drinkwater? I don't get his signing at all, he is the definition of bang average. Probably better than Bakayoko, mind.

And soon to be Andy fecking Carroll .

A Chelsea fan on the caf called them the ''new Arsenal'' due to their new tight fisted approach to the market. Is Abramovic finally getting bored?

What a response to say when asked about your possibility to leave. Imagine the reaction of that on his players.

In which he also said " For sure I have another year on my contract and I think the club would have to send me away" implying he will see out his 3 year contract.

There are in the news now for racism allegations in the past. Good of Chelsea to investigate it and to offer support to the victims.

The interest from Roman has certainly died down. Unless he starts injecting new capital into the playing squad or sells the club to a richer benefactor, expect more Andy Carrolls to be bought by Chelsea.

I see. Is there any fear he'll try recoup his money that he invested? For example squeeze money out of Chelsea while putting back in little investment?

Has he ever been reported to take money/fees like the Glazers do to United?

All the questions!

Zappacosta is decent going forward; but I would hardly consider him a good player. Bakoyoko is an unmitigated disaster; looks clueless in 9/10 games he plays. Drinkwater has been ok, but ok is not really what Chelsea should be aiming for.

These are opinions I've formed watching most Chelsea games.

Chelsea went backwards in the transfer window. They are 9 points worse off this season so compared to last season, and had they gotten the right players they could have had a very good go at the CL. I would say that @singabiru is spot on with his assessment of the Chelsea board. They have kept the expectations of 2004-2010 with a fraction of the spending in relative terms.

To be honest; the measure of the Chelsea squad is a bit innacurate IMO, because they won the league without European football which is a massive advantage. Chelsea see a big drop in quality when they don't have their first choice players; which is a sign that the squad needs work.
It’s amusing and tragic to observe the kind of players the blue-tinted brigade is wanting nowadays with the likes of Zappacosta, Drinkwater, Barkley and even Bakayoko being considered as great signings with lots of potential. The Board before 2010 wouldn’t even look at such players. Instead of signing one top class midfielder for 75 million pounds and utilise Loftus-Cheek as a squad option, the Board paid that amount for Drinkwater and Bakayoko. Even the limited money that is being spent has been wasted on a bunch of mediocre players instead of focusing on quality.

And yet we won the league more recently than you, and you are currently only 1 point ahead of us. If you have been buying all these great players, why aren't you competing for the title?

Because United had a clown of a manager and a deranged lunatic succeed him.

Imagine if instead of getting Conte, you got in Alan Pardew; he took you to mid table mediocrity. He got sacked and you got in Arsene Wenger for 2-3 years. And then you got Conte. Conte would have zero chance on winning the league in that situation.

I seem to remember Azpliacueta being a nobody we bought for £7m too. Maybe you should stick to Football Manager if you only care about big names.

And yet a lot of you were confident of winning the league or at least challenging for it when the season was about to begin? I am not happy about some of our purchases, but it is quite funny to see some of you gloating as if you are way ahead of us.

I know you would think they are tearing up the league with a huge gap between us and them. Despite the fact both teams are failing to get anywhere near city's level and compete.

Well I certainly wasn't; I wanted a solid top 4 finish and a good run in the CL. And it's not really gloating; but a presentation of the facts. It's a recurring theme for Chelsea in the last 5-10 years that they roll back their investment when they win the league instead of pushing on.

We've won the league 3 times in the last 10 years and 2 times in the last 5. I will take another 5 - 10 years of the same.

Anyways, that's my last post for the day. I don't want to keep pushing this topic anyways

Azpicuelatta was purchased as a result of good scouting something which I have seldom seen in recent years. Note the difference between big names and big quality but then again I wouldn’t expect a blue tinted fellow like you to know the difference. Now that is a true indication of someone who lives his or her world in computer simulations. Heed my advice and spend your time in Chelsea fan forums where you can indulge in all the fantasies of zappacosta and bakayoko being great players instead of facing hard truths in neutral Football forums.

I doubt it as he’s a fan unlike the Glazers.

Bottom line is: if you don’t invest big money consistently, you will not compete consistently.

Would be a shame for the PL if Roman has decided to be frugal.

Maybe after you've spent more than 2 months here you might be in more of a position to tell other people what type of posting fits here. This isn't a place where you have to stick the knife into your own teams back in order to be accepted.

In the meantime, I'll just put you in the same box as others who just want to dig at their own players and club no matter what. I don't know why you even bother calling yourself a fan, when you offer no support to the guys wearing the shirt. It's one thing to offer a critique of a player performance in a match or have a pop at the way the club is being managed from time to time, but the likes of you go beyond that into just trashing Chelsea players. To borrow your own posting style for a second, why don't you just go and support City, I think you'd be happier there.

You can tell the posters here what and how to post only if you own this forum. Otherwise you are just one of the hundreds of anoymous nicks where your registration date means nothing to anyone.

You are wasting your time telling me how I should support Chelsea when it damn well has nothing to do with you. I will post whatever I wish to regarding the club as long as it doesn't contravene the rules set in this forum. Calling facts out WITHOUT blue tinted glasses is what I post and if you don't like it - tough! Asking me to support City is a testament that you have lost the debate and are resorting ad hominem attacks but after all, what can I expect from biased fans who doesn't know a good player from a bad one just because he wears blue? To remind you, this is a Man Utd forum and not a Chelsea one.

Acceptance? Hmmm, maybe that's what it's all about, because I'm sometimes confused if he was a fan or not.

Every single post of yours on here is something negative about Chelsea's spending. There's no posts in any other thread about any other subject.

Of course you can post on whatever subject you like but you seem a smart guy and are certainly articulate, it's a shame you only seem interested in such a specific thing.

Spot on.

I couldn't agree more. The only person who has been bringing up where people should go post has been you.

If you ever run out of sleeping pills; watching Chelsea should do the trick.

They are an awful team to watch. What is their style of play?

A few decisions by Conte that need to be highlighted:

At home, against 10 men and still playing Bakayoko and Kante. Bakayoko is truly awful and it's hilarious that they sold Matic to us and bought him.

They are so reliant on Hazard, yet he was subbed off today. It doesn't matter if he was having an off day, he's by trying best player and should be on the pitch.
