Chelsea vs. Manchester United

no way rio is playing this game, wrap him up in a cotton wool. carrick might need a rest too. same goes for evra, van persie and maybe rooney even.

front 6 should be hernandez, welbeck, nani, giggs, anderson and fletcher.

Lindegaard
Rafael smalling Evans buttner
Anderson scholes fletcher
Giggs
Hernandez welbeck

I feel like this is the most likely lineup, still a very strong team, almost everyone gets a rest for Saturday. We'll probably lose this though, seeing as they'll be out for revenge after yesterday. Maybe nani might start ahead of giggs to make it a 4-3-3 instead of a 4-3-1-2 type formation.

Predicting 2-1 Chelsea, fletcher scoring for us.

What's amazing is we can easily change 9-10 players from yesterday's lineup and still have a hell of a team. Not sure Chelsea have the same luxury. I'm afraid I might miss this game, my girlfriend wants to have a Halloween party at our flat. I'll probably have to isolate myself for a good part of the evening, I'd really like to watch the game to see how we line up and play.

I reckon Rooney, Cleverley and Hernandez will be the only players that'll play that took part yesterday.

I don't see Evans being rested and I'd be a little surprised if Rafael is too. I can also see Rooney and Cleverley rested for Arsenal, but most likely on the bench rather than left out completely.

Still expect to see these players involved:

Lindegaard > de Gea
Rafael
Wootton > Ferdinand
Evans
Buttner > Evra
Fletcher > Carrick
Anderson > Cleverley
Scholes/Giggs > Rooney
Nani > Valencia
Hernandez > van Persie
Welbeck > Young

But as you suggested, I wouldn't be shocked if Rooney and Cleverley play again, or even Valencia/Young. But to me, that would just be reducing the sharpness of a lot of our other players who may need to step into a more important match at any given time. When we have Arsenal next in the league (which is still a big game), you just have to put that first.

I still can't judge what Chelsea's approach would be. I would fancy them to start Marin and Sturridge, possibly Malouda, over the likes of Mata, Hazard, and obviously Torres. They'll be forced to play a similar back four and probably put Romeu in too. Of course, as I already said, they might just be bitter fecks and go with the same team minus Torres and Ivanovic.

I think we'll lose this game but it shouldn't effect us too much. The first-team squad will still be on a high having won at the Bridge for the first time in ages and closed the gap at the top. As well as having a week's rest, this should hopefully spur us on against Arsenal.

My bad. I was contemplating. between putting Evans or Keane in the starting line-up. I guess I went with Evans.:)

Keane and Wootton were a good partnership against Newcastle in our last LC game, but Keane was pretty poor according to the Caf in the last U21 game where we conceded 4 to the Spurs U21s. I'm guessing he won't start, so I went with Evans as well.

Not a chance that Scholes will play in this game. He's on 4 yellow cards so another means he'd miss Arsenal at the weekend.

Interesting thought, even if Scholes doesn't start against Arsenal he's definitely our most potent midfielder at coming in late as a sub and changing a game. Since Scholes didn't start against Chelsea in the league I figured it was a good game for Scholes, but you may well be right, Arsenal is the far more important game.

I'm pretty sure Fergie said Smalling is still at least a couple of weeks away. As we're down to the bare bones on the defensive front (no defenders on the bench today, of course), I'm not sure Fergie can risk either Ferdinand or Evans for this one.

On the 22nd Fergie basically said that Smalling was 2 weeks away and Jones is about 3. So even Arsenal would be something of an early return, much less Chelsea. I think we'll see him get a sub appearance before he starts a game, that's usually Fergie's m.o.

------------Linde
Rafael--Wootton-Evans--Buttner
--------Fletch--Scholes
----------Anderson
Nani--------------------Welbeck
----------Hernandez

I would like Rafael to be rested. I get the feeling that he's due an injury soon. :(

I really hope everyone is right about the Nani/Hernandez/Welbeck front 3. I think Rafael and Evans will play as we can't go there without some experience in the back 4. Fletcher and Anderson surely must start, it's just a question of which of the golden oldies gets the 3rd midfield spot.

Is Lindegaard fit? If not I don't think it would do Dea Gea any harm to play this one, more games the better for him.

Lindegaard was on the bench for the last game so I imagine he's fit to play.

I vaguely remember the commentator mentioning something about a thumb injury. Not sure though.

That would be a better reason to leave him out

Fair enough; I was using "rested" as a lazy catch-all for not wanting those players involved. I certainly wouldn't want Scholes playing in the fecking league cup days before the Arsenal league game.

I got a good feeling about this, no wins at Chelsea for 10 years and then 2 in 4 days.A midfield of Fletcher Cleverley and Anderson sounds good with Chicarito getting a start up front.Di Matteo has a problem in that he'll want to rest a few ahead of their game at Swansea but he'll want to get revenge so may go stronger than he may have.
United 2-1.

We will lose 2-1 wont we? You can read it, we beat them the other day and now its their turn. its always like that.

We get beat then who really cares, I mean never nice to lose but this is a zero priority competition thats just useful for getting fringe players/injury returns/youth players games.

And besides defence aside I think we will be strong anyway, will be interesting how Chelsea line up for it.

Yup, it often works out that way. RDM's going to want it a lot more than Fergie, because regardless of the competition, two losses to the same team in such a small space of time is never good for morale.

I think we'll win if Chelsea choose to rotate. They don't have a very big squad at all so if they choose to rest their first team it will be a poor 11.

On the other hand, if they go pretty much full strength they'll win pretty comfortably.

I would like to see Joshua King get a run. Does anyone know if he's injured?

Tunners, Lingard, Micheal Keane and Vermijl aren't playing at the reserves match against Rochdale at the moment.

I agree with this.
However what matters is that we beat them in the PL, if we lose this one I won't be that pissed. Don't get me wrong, losing is never "acceptable", but the game that matters was won, this is basicaly a competition used to give fringe players, those coming back from injury and young players game time, so it won't be the end of the world if we go out. That being said I'd love to get 2 over them so early on in the season, should be huge for our morale and theirs if we manage to beat them twice.

Doesn't that make this competition very useful & important then?

I agree with this sentiment, except given how comprehensive our squad is right now (defensive injuries aside), this cup is so useful to keep all players sharp and ready for action, when called upon for the PL and ECL. Likewise, as we know, its gives younger and more fringe first squad players some 'ownership and responsibility' to achieve success.

Anyway, the chavs will be without Terry, Ivanovich and Torres through suspension, so thats already a gaping hole from their best team, and Im sure some other players will be feeling knackered given they had to play out 30/20 minutes of the game on Sunday with 10/9 men.

Chavs too have important games in the PL and ECL coming up too. I cant see they have any real option but to also play a 'squad 11', and as noted by many above, in that case, we have a much better and more experienced team at our disposal.

I want the win!

Rest everyone, play the youngsters. Great opportunity for them. Arsenal is the biggest game this week and we already got the result we wanted in Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Don't get me wrong, I want the win as well, but I'm already satisfied with how the games played out last week, and it's definitely more important that we won the PL game.

While I agree that they can't play their best 11, I don't think they'll field such a weaker squad, think of how their morale would drop after 1st losing to Shaktar, and then twice in a row to us, both at their ground.

Yep, we should definitely put the main focus on the Arsenal game, if we win that than we'll be in a great position, we've already played Liverpool, Everton, Newcastle and Chelsea away, Spurs and Fulham at home and now Arsenal, after that game we'll only have City left to deal with, while the other games are significantly easier fixtures.

And truth be told we've done quite well. Bar the first game of the season vs Everton and the stupid mistakes and incredibile bad luck vs Tottenham we've won every one of those games, and I've a feeling we'll beat Arsenal as well, especialy if we tone it down in defense a bit.

We have to make sure that Rio, Evans, Carrick, Rooney and RVP MUST play in top physical condition vs Arsenal.

Given the defensive problems, not sure how SAF deals with the back for for this game, but the above should be sent home and told not to leave.

That still offers SAF lots of very good choices.

What's the big deal?
Ofcourse teams like United, Barca, Real, Bayern, etc. don't care about Europa League, but for smaller teams it's a big deal.
And no mather which way you put it, I'm pretty sure most of the teams would prefer a Europa League title over the COC.
