Your standards are pretty high in terms of International footy (England, etc...) but to me its just go to the World Cup.

Nobody's denying it would be a great achievement for the national team but some of us just aren't bothered by international football. I didn't even know England were playing last night, which gives you some indication to my level of support for the national team.

England winning the world cup would be nice except for all the plastic fans who don't have a clue about football suddenly crawling out of the woodwork and acting like the biggest fans in the world, I hate that.
United winning the treble would be amazing for United fans and piss off the scousers, City fans, Leeds fans, and pretty much everyone else. That appeals more to me.

why do we use that expression? Is it just to suggest we are the best in the north of England? If so it's slightly misleading, as The Cock of The North is a Scottish, mainly bagpipes tune, and derives from an ancient nickname of the Duke of Richmond and Gordon, from before the dukedom was combied (i.e. from the old Dukes of Gordon and the Gordon-Lennox family who hold that title)
