Could they void the PL due to the Coronavirus? | No | Resuming June 17th

We still have the prospect of Liverpool winning the league in an empty stadium. As a worst case scenario, it’s pretty good.

That's not acceptable.

It's all well and good keeping the fans separated but what about the players, does their health not enter the equation? The 22 players out there on the pitch are just as much at risk as the rest of us.

Cancel the PL until further notice. It's the only logical solution at this point.
They should cancel the league after we leapfrog Chelsea on the table. The way things stand we won’t be in champions league of football gets cancelled.

No games in pubs? Catering industry is already suffering from significant financial difficulties and that was without the coronavirus. I struggle to see how they'll close the pubs for football when it's one the biggest enticements to go to the pub.

Yeah streams will be available regardless if the Govt/FA say only season ticket holders get to stream them, it's the equivalent of the Govt trying to ban porn because they don't understand the internets...

Also, suggesting that all games to be played behind closed doors would put the majority of clubs in the championship and below out of business.

Elitist viewpoint if I ever saw one.

I think the suggestion is they'd ban televising games in pubs, rather than close them. How in the world they'd police that is another matter.

I suppose they'd have to close them all between kick offs? The owners won't be happy that's for sure.

Players and staff have families and vulnerable relatives too. Absurd to put the few people who are able to absorb being off work for months, out to work, for no real reason. Let them relax in their mansions

That's a really good point. It's much more practical just to end it and start again when this blows over.

Not just the players, but all the people they come into contact with. What if Wayne Rooney contracts the disease and comes into contact with an elderly woman and somehow gets his fluids on her? The entire season needs cancelled, for the sake of old women.

Im with you on that one. Would pretty funny to watch them lift the trophy and cheer only to hear their voices echoing around the empty stadium.

They won't cancel it. Either stop it for a month. I guess they want to wait until Liverpool win it and then suspend it once the Euros get postponed to 2021.

I 100% see the Europa league and even the CL being suspended with so many Italian and Spain terms still in the comp.

Liverpool not playing behind closed doors tonight is definitely going to come back and bite the UK and them in the arse.

Yes, that too.

Tomorrow's Times goes along with what Stan says. If number of cases hits 500+ (likely to be tomorrow) then decision will be made whether league will be BCD. No chance of postponing fixtures.

It's a fluid situation, it only takes one player or staff to test positive and then the whole club is in lockdown.

That's that then. This week will be the last football we'll be watching for a while

Yep think they'll try to get this weekend's fixtures done and after that we won't see anything until mid April (and that's only if the cases start decreasing which is far from certain).

Perhaps the Euro play off games will still go ahead but I can't see how Euro 2020 will go ahead this summer, delay it until next summer is common sense.

Selfish lot only cared about creating an atmosphere.

For all the good it did them :D

With 3000 potential coronavirus carriers from Madrid at Anfield tonight, the chances of the club getting locked down just increased.

Phew, thanks uncle Stan. Always there for a rescue. So we might get another week of games at the very least. We need to beat Everton and the next team to at least make it mathematically ours and give the PL folk a headache when they decide to cancel the PL. I'll take the empty ground, the asterisk and the lack of bus parade.

I think this weekend will be the last set of fixtures this season.

If Liverpool are denied the title because of the Coronavirus I think I may laugh for the rest of my life.

It will be so much worse 1 month from now, guaranteed. And if they postpone it any longer the season will have to be declared null and void as already mention.

They'll cancel or suspend it. Before this evening there was the sense of belief that the players would be protected. With Juve's entire squad compromised that notion will shatter. One PL player further tests positive and it would seem inhumane not to suspend it. These guys are sweating, spitting and making unsafe bodily contact

Making the season void isn't going to stop legal repercussions etc. either. Teams that weren't in European competitions that could have been this season, wouldn't be happy, for example. I really don't see what they're going to be able to do without a shitstorm following them.

Can't they just have the teams play in full Hazmat suits or something?

They will do everything they can to buy more time. They won't cancel it now. Maybe in a few weeks, once pressure builds up

Playing the games behind closed doors doesn't work because thousands of fans gather outside of the stadium like tonight's CL tie in Paris showed. So the risk remains which is unacceptable given the significant strain the coronavirus puts on the healthcare systems.

But it's a pandemic.

Yes it would be immensely frustrating but this is a gravely serious situation, I'm not sure what other option there is.

Surely even if Liverpool mathematically ‘win’ the league in the next week the season has to actually complete before they are officially champions in the record books. Or is it just an asterix?
