Could they void the PL due to the Coronavirus? | No | Resuming June 17th

We’ve already moved beyond, will this season be completed, it will not.

We’re now at will next season take place at all? This is going to run for the rest of the year, maybe into 2021.

Half a million people in the UK are probably going to die from this.

Listen I don't care if we are in CL.....if voiding means that pool doesn't win the league this year I will take it...

I don't think they will be able to play at the level they did this year if they don't win (depressing for some players)….

As far us there are no gurantees that we would have finished in top 4 (even though recent results are good)…....

I dunno, if it doesn't count toward the official tally, why bother?

It just confuses things.

Maybe they could give them a small points advantage or something when the new season eventually starts up again?

That small points advantage being 25 points? Wouldn't be a bad start.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in Alex Ferguson's house if the league is indeed cancelled. I can imagine him sitting by the fire with a glass of red chuckling to himself upon hearing the news.

Gonna play devils advocate here. Now obviously a unique situation this. I think the games should have been played on behind closed doors with sick players sitting it out and healthy players playing on.
I Think everyone can agree this virus isn’t going anywhere, say for example the football league takes a month off, every player/staff is virus free and returns to playing.
These footballers are still going to be in the outside world mingling, say somebody catches it again. Do you then suspend the football league again?

The scientists seem unsure as to whether getting this virus makes you immune or less susceptible to it once you’ve recovered and are exposed to it again.
In every other job or working environment (certainly mine) if I caught the virus, isolated myself and healed I would immediately be expected to return to work regardless of others still potentially carrying it.
I completely get and understand why keeping fans away at the moment is for the best, though the UK deciding to do that whilst letting everything else run as normal doesn’t make much sense.

Anyway, likelihood is it’ll all be suspended, probably for a month or two and then resume with next season starting later.
Pretty certain the Euros will be cancelled and likely competitions like the League Cup and Checkatrade trophy removed from next seasons calendar.
Can’t play Euros next summer because the female one is next summer and the final at Wembley ironically enough. UEFA are going to have to take this one on the chin.
Also, actually gutted for Liverpool and Leeds at the moment (yeah I just typed that) of course this is much bigger than football but from a purely football stand point feck me this is a shit situation.

That small points advantage being 25 points? Wouldn't be a bad start.
Liverpool are 1/1000 to win the title.

But Leicester were 5000/1 to win in 2016.

The odds don't determine anything. Sport is what happens on the pitch.

I think they do deserve some recognition for an excellent 29 games so far. But that's not a league season and therefore not a league title.

I reckon by "certain clubs" he means 19 out of 20 clubs.

absolute shambles. No league should ever get voided in a situation like this. Postpone it, yes.It should be fair to everyone. Theres no logical reason to cancel 30 fecking games like it they meant nothing.

Luckily Liverpool are so far ahead it will be impossible for anyone to ever suggest Liverpool haven't won the league this year. If it were closer then you could make another argument, but Liverpool have won the 19/20 Premier League, even if it gets postponed or voided. Nobody will ever be able to change the way the current table looks.
man I am a united fan, I can’t stand your shitty ass club. But I agree that even if season is voided, in my mind you’d have won the league title. But I want the season to be voided anyway for safety of the people

Liverpool fans moaning about missing out on the title need to spare a thought for Ighalo missing out on the golden boot.

But what if this continues all summer/into next season? How will that work?

No team has even played 30 games, all teams are still in the 20s in terms of games played.

Anything could happen from here on in - as shown by what Watford just did to you. That's the beauty of the PL!

You can't be awarded with a PL title that you haven't won.

What if God forbid, this pandemic went on for say 5 years ? Carry on like nothing happened ?

There's more important things in life than fecking Liverpool, it's not your year, deal with it.

But what if this continues all summer/into next season? How will that work?
I wasn’t thinking that far ahead. We surely need to wait a few more days to understand the entire proportion of the current scenario. But, until then, just postpone it.
Think of it like you’re in college. You have done well in your semester until now and you need low grades to complete it. Corona virus breaks out. Its Resident Evil levels of shit. They decide to void your semester. Youll have to do it all over and also your collegues whom all have been AWFUL. How would you feel?

Lets all hope things will get better soon. China is looking good now considering while other countries are deep and deeper in shit. Almost conspiracy theory worthy.

Lives are more important than your team winning the league.

Say we do 6 weeks before everything is back to normal. That will put us in May.
Do we just resume the league then and start the next season at the same time? No time off for players?

what if we stop till mid June?
Everything shifts forward. The summer break/window (maybe a shorter one due to this break). There's no hard and fast rule that the new season has to begin in August.

That's just it.

I don't think THIS season can resume. Player contracts will end in June and squads will potentially change significantly. It could also take months for isolations to end, so the knock effects of playing the 9 remaining matches will mean delaying the following season by at least a couple of months on top. This then means we have to start delaying international tournaments and so on and so forth. Then everything goes to pot.

At best, I reckon the PL will give Liverpool an honourary league title with an asterisk beside it. But the next football we'll play will be a fresh start and a new season which the authorities will try to align to the regular football calendar.
I think it is possible to delay everything accordingly. But if it's a problem they'll probably come to a conclusion to this season which will attempt to satisfy most. I don't believe this season can be completed null and void. Also, for the people saying that it only affects Liverpool, we don't get CL football as well which could impact our transfer activity as well.

Ok what needs to happen is some games go ahead this weekend and we beat Spurs. If we do, then we'll be ahead of them albeit with them having a game in hand. If they then decide to postpone and inevitably cancel the rest of the season we will technically be fourth. They can't just award Chelsea the win, because Villa are also a club who need that win.

Yes. Would have worked if teams weren't getting sick already. Sport is off completely then, happy holidays. Netflix it is and also I think I'm going to order those Man Utd season dvd's full boxset or something or I'll go mad. Can't even go to the bowling alley for some simple fun. This sucks.
I mean, most of us are still working in packed offices so I imagine going out for bowling is nothing major in comparison.

Think it's pretty safe to say that Utd won't be heading to London this weekend, not now two London based players have been diagnosed tonight.

My bet is that the Euros get moved to 2021 and things will settle down by the summer and the league will resume (maybe behind closed doors still) then.

Not sure the positions of the current league will matter if it canceled. If it does, they will probably count the top 4 of the last completed season, which is the last one. Doesn't make sense to cancel it about 10 games before its end and count the current top 4 for the next season's Uefa competitions, especially with such a narrow gab between 4th and beyond.

There are infected people among teams themselves now, Arsenal manager and a Chelsea player. Not sure having games behind closed doors will be a good control option at this point.

I don’t think anything would resume until vaccine is available. You risk causing another outbreak without an vaccine. No point in stop start things, especially with sport being all about form, momentum. It would feel empty trying to drag a dead horse.

Voiding is a complete bullshit response that would only be driven by those with an agenda like Norwich, Bournemouth, Man Utd, Everton etc. A perfect excuse for teams who've been shit for the past 7-8 months while punishing teams who've actually been quality like Liverpool and Sheffield United.
Do you need a hug mate.

I mean I fully expect that if it were cancelled it would have to be made null and void HOWEVER, if as some people were saying it ends and we take the last known league position as gospel then we have to do our best to try and make sure we're in fourth. No one knows what's going to happen and I especially, drunk at 3 in the morning, have no answers.

The world won't shutdown until there's a vaccine available, if it does, we'll have bigger problems than Football. China's going back to work already, Japan was able to stop the exponential growth and has come down to vaguely linear growth now, Korea is flattening out as well. I think given a week or two, cases in Europe will stop growing exponentially as well.

Sensible precautions (travel bans, testing in airports, tracking quarantines, avoiding large gatherings, washing hands etc.) will be enough to contain this disease. It shouldn't even have come this far and it's a total public health failure but now with all hands on deck, I think we'll hear positive news from Europe fairly quickly (2-3 weeks) and America (in a month or so).

I agree about the games in empty stadiums, but I think they'd want to get the season over with, so I'm guessing they'll push it through as soon as things settle down a bit.

It’s a pandemic. Thing that takes priority over the health of the whole world.

This is just sport. Chill

If I was genuinely good at college I would ace it again. Wouldn’t bother me except for losing a semester.

Biggest problem is this virus may cause not only death but damage the infected's lungs as well. Most of the patients who had recovered are now with damaged lungs, sometime very seriously. In such case they won't be able to do heavy works anymore.

For the footballers or any athlete that basically means the end of their career. If I was them no way I'd accept to play or even train once there's a positive case within the squad.

The difference being, that Blackpool has played 3 games from 42. Liverpool winning is inevitable.

It’s more the European sports and relegation / promotion issues.

I think you’re being a bit ridiculous here to be fair. “Most” of the patients are now with damaged lungs? I think you maybe need to get a hold of that grip there.

This is uncharted territory.

Chelsea and Arsenal will have games postponed indefinitely. The Premier League will follow suit, similar to their European counterparts.. This pandemic will likely not resolve until late summer.

I imagine this year will be voided for all UEFA leagues.

I don't see any reason for PL to continue. It needs to get suspended and just like other leagues, will be on wait and watch.
The safety of players, staff and fans is much more important.

No other choice now, it will be surely cancelled today.

There’s too many named people getting the virus it must be in the thousands at this point, the government need to wake up.
