Cristiano Ronaldo - Performances (wums will be thread banned)

I can see Portugal reaching the final. Ronaldo strikes fear into the opposition and this makes it possible for Portugal to defend well vs top dogs for no team would dare to give much room for counter attacks. Croatia didn't want to take many risks (bar the final minutes, that is) and didn't look like the team that managed to beat Spain. It was a very dull game but Portugal lack the players to outplay the best teams so they have to sit back and wait for their chance.

Best chance he has for international success this tournament. He won't have a better chance with the top teams not as good as they once was (Spain).

Portugal have a clear route to the final, Belgium in the semi finals will be a 50/50 game but reckon it will go like Croatia and prove they was overrated by experts too early on.

Thought Portugal had a really good game vs Austria but were unlucky not to score at least twice. Today you conceded two deflected goals and that was a bit unlucky as well but your defence wasn't good. If you play like that vs Croatia it won't be pretty. But you won't play like that and you can go further in the Euros.

:smirk:

Proves why people who use Cristiano Ronaldo's assist record as evidence that he's a creative player are morons.

Morons are people who generalise like you. Assistance or not Ronaldo played a key role in the attack and the goal.

He was pretty poor for the entire game. It was a tough match for Portugal though. They just snatched it at the end with a lot of luck as I highly doubt Nani meant that pass to Ronaldo.

It was his best defensive performance in ages  it was funny watching him doing crucial defensive clearences. Put him as libero

I bet his father up in heaven is extremely proud of his son.

You can accuse him for many things but never being a bottler.

Again proving his doubters that he is greatest of all time, pure joy to watch.

Not been watching this tournament that much to be honest. But genuine question, has Ronaldo had just one class half all tournament?

How have Portugal played already after only playing their final group game a few days ago? Feels like France haven't played in over a week.

It was a short spell in the 2nd half of the previous game. Perceptions of him being anonymous will of course vanish when does something spectacular in the next round.

Perceptions depend on whoever is perceiving. Doesn't interest me personally. Overall brilliant performances is what the criteria is IMO.

In that case, every player in the Euros has been unimpressive.

That's a shame. My interest levels in this year's competition is very low anyway so it appears I'm missing out on little then.

Don't think he did much different with regards to set-piece defending -- he very often if not always goes in there and helps the DF for both club & country. What was noticeably different was his pressing the Croatian backline when they were in possession. I really liked that from him. Other than that he was pretty much a non-factor in this game, credit to his determination at the end there though.

As usual you guys seem well organized and drilled against strong sides where the onus is on them to create play, but this time you seem to have a far better arsenal in attack to hurt opponents: Nani in good form, João Mário with some great movement and deliveries, Renato Sanches driving forward, Quaresma as a supersub with his shooting/crossing is always a threat. And the fullbacks were particularly great against Croatia, I thought. Fonte, you could tell, was not so comfortable at this level yet, but if Pepe keeps playing like this it should have a calming influence on him (as weird as that sounds :D). I had expected a lot more from Moutinho (he was amazing at Euro 2012 and in qualifying for WC 2014 but I guess in recent years he lost that form?) and Vierinha.

He played bad but worked hard for the team which is the least you can ask of someone on an off day. If he played bad and didn't bother working hard then I think it's fair to slate him but he at least worked hard.

Let's be honest here, I would suspect there's a highly inverse correlation between intelligence and caring who is better out of Messi or Ronaldo. I'm not sure intellectuals spend endless hours unproductively arguing about who was the best artist or composer of all time.

Are you saying that those who are frequently trolling on both players threads are intellectually challenged?

Although being a fan of football team, and emotionally attached to it, also is a bit illogical. More so for fans of teams that would rarely win trophies. But let the man do what he likes to do.

It's a football site. There aren't any intellectuals here.

Portugal under Bento was a conservative defensive counterattackin team that made it far in the Euros until they lost to Spain in pks.....

This team, is even more conservative and with the euros in general being rather lackluster, they could make it far after eliminating the best team on their side of the bracket.

Can't begin to imagine how Nani and Ronaldo would fare with a legit striker to draw the opposition CBs attention. These two would do quite well with an Aguero or Higuain in the side.

Ironically Messi would do better in the Portugal set up and Ronaldo in Argentina set up IMO. Argentina seems to better on counter while Portugal for most part is better in possession and Messi would be a perfect false #9 without teammates stepping on his foot like Argentina.

The difference between Luis Figo and Ronaldo:
"When Ronaldo started with the national team, the first one to help him was Figo. He was the first player to challenge Ronaldo to dribble and shoot, to score goals, to play his own game, to keep working all the time and become a better footballer.

'Figo took a position, saying "My son, try again, keep trying. If you see the situation is difficult, I will give you a hand, and if you make a mistake I have everything ready, so calm down, but you have to try".'

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...ernational-duty-says-Luiz-Felipe-Scolari.html

He will not say the same if a young player comes in

The difference bettween Figo and Ronaldo is that one is a very good player and the other one is the best player in the world.
