Not part of the guys fanbase since he left United but it's amazing he's still producing impressive numbers. Wonder how much he would be remembered as a United player when he leaves considering how successful he has been since he left.

He did nothing until he scored. But the great players do this stuff.

Only watched the second half, mind you, but he makes clever runs all the time opening up space for other players; he is always an option to play too as well. He had a very good shot saved by Neuer. He had three goals, and yet he played like crap? If Ibra manages to have four chances in a match, we would say that was a pretty decent outing. Scoring on three of those is pretty great. I'm not sure I understand what you want a striker to do.

Say whatever you wanna say about him but he's still one of the game's greatest game changer.

Good one mate

Well tbf United paid what our corrupt board at the time asked them. We had some pretty bad boards but that one takes top spot as in the worst mistake in our transfer history. You should overpay us for some crappy Sporting B player. You owe us. Always get a decent deal from us (Ronaldo, Nani and Rojo).

I am more ticked we didn't try to get their cast offs then.

Like Robben or Sneijder.

We just botched that entire summer.
Agreed, that annoys me a lot more the 80 million pound fee. We could have signed both Robben & Sneijder for cheap, who went on to have world class seasons at Bayern & Inter respectively. Hell, even 33 year old Robben would be very useful for us right now.

He wasn't world class at Sporting.

So what? He was considered the most talented prospect ever from our academy. It was a shitty deal by our corrupt board. Being world class at that moment means nothing. He had all potencial to be. We should have been more patient and take advantage of his quality and potencial in football terms and then sold him for a bigger profit. You paid 30 million quid for freakin Anderson. Was he world class?

Cmon now, Ronaldo was far from a sure thing at that point, no one knew that he would end up reaching the level that he did (even at United). Going by the market & player profile then, it was close to fair value. On the other hand, watching Ronaldo become Real's leading goal scorer of all time hasn't been surprising at all. If we paid you 30 million pounds instead for Ronaldo then, would that make you feel a lot better? Because in hindsight, that would still be a bargain.

You don't know what you are talking about. Ronaldo's hype had been around since youth rank days. He was great even before that stupid stadium inauguration game against United. He was great as teenager in our league and playing in Europe against teams like Inter. What 100% of the Sporting fans think from the day Ronaldo was presented in Manchester was that we got ripped off. Not only we didn't take full advantage of his talent on pitch, we also got peanuts compared to what Porto/Benfica got for players with half of Ronaldo's talent/potencial. Seriously you are way off in this one, no offense. No way Pinto da Costa (Porto Chairman) would ever sell Ronaldo this cheap. You got lucky with the circunstancies that we had a corrupt board. Our loss and your gain. That's life i suppose.

It was 2003, 11 million pound sounds about right for an 18 year old prospect?

For United fans who knew nothing about Ronaldo perhaps. But for Sporting fans not really. We even got mocked by rivals on those days for selling him too cheap. SAF was without any doubt his prime influence but he always had that drive to succeed. Even from his Sporting youth rank days. You just have to read testimonials from his former collegues and coaches.

So we ripped you off and in turn got ripped off by Real. :(

Jesus even what you guys paid for Rojo seems low these days.

Im kidding im perfectly fine with this one

What was it? £16m or something?

Does seem low based on the market price now, but back then it was probably reasonable.

[white text not showing up on phone.]

What's even more funny is that he wasn´t even supposed to join United. This is not any Wenger "i almost signed" bs, we actually had a deal with Juventus lined up cash plus player but we got rejected by freakin Marcelos Salas  and the deal was off

All I'm saying is that on a continental level, Ronaldo's hype and profile wasn't near as someone like Wayne Rooney. I'm not saying that he wasn't highly rated by Sporting fans and the academy, but outside of Portugal, I don't recall him being a super hyped prospect. But this entire conversation is pointless, because regardless of what we would have realistically paid you, you would still feel ripped off. Transfer market has changed a lot in years. Believe it or not, at the time, Ronaldo's 12 million pound fee made him the most expensive teenager in English football history at the time. We signed Rooney a year later at 25 million. Now a mediocre young English CB like Stones costs almost 50 million. So everything is relative.

What's his goals to games this season?

It's funny people think we got robbed haha. A world record fee is what it was and it was perfectly fair at the time

People complain he's lost his skill and dribbling. Who cares?! The man has taken it upon himself to perfect the art of goal scoring.

Not looking good, not beating men, just doing that thing that wins games. Scoring goal after goal after goal.

Plus it seems now he is playing within himself physically, either age or permanent niggling injury, yet still smashes in fifty goals a season.

Nah mate, again i tell you, you are wrong. We had approaches from Barcelona, Arsenal and Juventus for him. He was pretty hyped since his Toulon tournament performance. It's a matter of living this from the start. Like i said, everyone in Portugal said it was a bad deal. Everyone. I know what i´m talking about since i remember those days clearly. The same board that sold him for peanuts (United has no fault) also sold club owned buildings for 1/3 of the price and have been found out by our current board in a club audit. That corrupt board ruined the club for the next years. But no point prolonging this. You may look at numbers and give your opinion but i speak from knowledge of our club and sentiment of my fellow supporters.

What about the 1,500 euros you paid Nacional?

 it was even worse. It was some footballs, some kits and we forgot a Nacional debt. Nacional also released him because he had some health problems that could be more easily solved with Sporting money and physicians. That's why Ronaldo has such big connection to Sporting besides coming from our academy. We kinda saved his life.

Heh, kind of like Barca, the NOB's and Messi, except instead of saving his life, they gave him a bunch of drugs to stop him being a weiner.
