The other thread has devolved into a complete unmitigated clusterfeck and is truly beyond salvaging.

Use this thread to discuss everything to do with Cristiano Ronaldo moving forward.

This thread is NOT for discussing Messi, or for petty pathetic little digs at other posters. It is not for comparing the two players. It is not for arguing over who loves who more.

We have managed to successfully separate Apple v Android and PS4 v Xbox on this site, and if you people cannot draw a line under this pathetic squabbling and stick to discussing Ronaldo alone in this thread you will no longer be allowed to post in it.

There will be another thread created for Messi, as well as one for comparisons.

This should be straight forward, please don't show me to have overestimated your intelligence.

I'll edit the post more later on - putting in spoilers to make it smaller and so on.

I'll update it after each match so people who are interested to know doesn't have to surf all over the place, or ask to find out the numbers.

Christ, I knew his goal record was ridiculous, didn't realise he had so many assists too though.

Most sources say that Ronaldo has 9 assists in the league, not 12.

In his 50 goals season, Messi had 15 assists. So, Ronaldo is currently on the way to better Messi's best season in La Liga both goals and assists wise.

I just went with Transfermarkt's numbers. I assume they count rebounds from shots/FK's as assists - which I agree with.

Here's the issue with Transfermarkt. They have an inconsistent approach towards these "wide" criteria, take for example winning penalties, before it only counted as an assist when another player took it, since last or even this season they count it as an assist even if the same player takes the penalty. So, he then gets both a goal and an assist for that. They haven't updated previous seasons yet to this criteria change so that makes for irregularities.

Cristiano's 17 "assists": in all competitions, he has 12 "strict" (Opta) assists + 4 pens won that he scored himself + 1 "wide" (Transfermarkt) assist, a deflected header that fell to Arbeloa v Ludogorets in the CL.

Really?

That's the last place I'd look for stats then.

I wouldn't go that far, it's a great resource (and the more sources the better usually); just like with anything the best approach is to verify as much as possible and be aware of the criteria employed by various sources.

Crap, I'll have to review it in a bit then. I'd give him the "wide" one though (But I'll have to see it myself first)

It should've been kind of a give-away when it states in his performance data overview for this season that he has 3 goals and 1 assist in a 3-0 win over Celta or 1 goal and 1 assist in a 1-2 loss v Atléti :D

:p

I just checked the summary though!

Edit: Updated stats post - We'll stick with OPTA for the sake of objectivity.

Is it my imagination or has Ronaldo had quite a few poorer performances recently where he manages to score but doesn't do a whole lot else?

Didn't know football's greatest series had done an episode on him too. Just came across it while switching TV channels here in India.

Did you notice the 'ZOOO' from him in an older game near the end of the show?

Anyways was great and nostalgic to see some of his United goals esp the free kick against Portsmouth and that 40 yarder against Porto.

Haha. No didn't notice. I was moving around in house doing some other stuff parallely so maybe missed because of that. Yeah, it was nice to see the Portsmouth goal and then the James' reaction :D

This is Ronaldo 70% of the time to be honest.

Goals from Ronaldo's first season at Madrid. The goals he scored that season probably include the majority of his best goals scored at Madrid in terms of dribbling.

An assist to Benzema this year vs Malaga. Unfortunately I couldn't find a gif for it.

I must admit that was the season when I was most envious of the Real Madrid fans. It looked for a while as if they might get 2006/7 Ronaldo flair combined with 2007/8 Ronaldo efficiency. But of course they won nothing that year. Then Mourinho came and it was all about efficiency. A bit of a shame, but that's the reality of professional football and Ronaldo's always been able to adapt.

Maybe he should go back to being #9.

Seriously though, the times I see him play these days he doesn't seem anywhere near as exciting to watch. Efficient and deadly, yea, but not as entertaining.

2006/07 was his most entertaining year in a United shirt, but that Ronaldo doesn't exist anymore.

A lot of those gifs are of him in recent years. Although in general I agree. He is very efficient in his dribbling now. He will only do it in moments where he is most likely to succeed and will make a simple pass instead if it is the best option. Over the years Madrid's counter attacking has been all about quick passing and movement as well as short bursts before releasing the ball and the players tend not to hold onto the ball very often either as it would slow down the counter attacks and give the opposition a chance to regroup so that would be one of the reasons that he does not dribble as much as he used to. Another reason I would say is to reduce the workload on him. He is very important to Madrid challenging in all three competitions with him playing over 50 games a year and he does not like to be substituted and I do not think that would be possible if he was dribbling and running around like crazy every game.

I was about to ask when he ever played as a leading striker but then I realised you meant shirt number :D

Don't get me wrong I understand the rationale behind it and god knows it's working for him (and you) when you look at his output.

Just from a neutral perspective, he's not as much fun to watch anymore, which is a shame.

He played as leading striker at the WC2010 with Queiroz and it was the reason why they had problems when they were very close for years. Mourinho also played him in that position at Real Madrid (i clearly remember a match against Barcelona) but he again said that he doesn't like playing there.

Can't rate him until he makes it at the biggest stage in the Supercopa and Copa del Rey.

Aye he's played the odd match for Real Madrid there, and even at times at Man Utd when Rooney and Tévez drifted wide. Had heard that about Portugal too but hadn't seen it myself.

Anyway, was just a throwaway comment about how I forgot that he ever had that shirt number.

I know you jest but he already did for the Copa del Rey with his goal in the final against Barcelona

Yeah i know. From what i've seen, he hasn't been good in that specific position and his expressions show his annoyance to play there. Perhaps he can evolve and be more open to that role as he gets older.

I don't think he'd be able to do it in the current Real Madrid set up, where Benzema does a lot of great work linking up play. But in a different set up I don't see why he couldn't adapt, the way Drogba played for Chelsea is surely something Cristiano has the skill set to play?

Edit: though he would have to improve with his back to goal.

I'm quite certain that he'll end up there when his legs start to go. With his finishing and movement he could do a brilliant job there in the future.

Agreed.

Funny you mention that, yesterday i was watching a portuguese sports program and Manuel José (one of the best portuguese managers in the history) said exactly the same.
