Not many foreign imports play great first season in, nomatter what age they are so I think the jury will be out on him for some time.
He's certainly getting a lot of exposure and Fergsun obviously feels he's ready for it.

I do not agree that he's been a disappointment, he's been every bit as good as I had hoped for when we signed him.

I can see how you feel he's been a disappointment, given the ludicrous hype on MotD after his debut. What can I say? I just don't feel remotely disappointed. I was led to believe he was an outstanding young talent, capable of taking men on and scoring goals. He's probably beaten more men in the few games he's played than anyone except Giggsy did the whole of last season, he's just scored his first goal, he looks like he's learning quickly about laying ther ball off and not dribbling (or diving) all the time, and he basically just looks pure class. He's 18. Disappointed, no. Delighted, yes. Worried he's gonna piss some fullback off so much he clobbers him good and proper, yes

For me, he really hasn't been a disappointment at all. But then it's probably all to due to expectation. After his great debut and the papers were calling him the boy wonder, expectations soared. But I never expected him to turn in that same kind of performance week-in/week-out.
With our current lack of creative players, he's one of the few players that I feel I can reasonably expect to create something special during a match or maybe even score the winner. And of all our buys the last 3 years, right now I'd put him 3rd, behind RVN and Tim Howard in terms of how "successful" the buy has been/will be.

Spot on IMO.
He's got all the characteristics of a great player - how many other 18 year olds in the world have got Ronaldo's basic skills?
He needs to (and will) grow mentally and phsyically, and we should all allow him to do so. He's too easily knocked off the ball now, but that'll improve once he get some more muscle. He needs to learn how to make the right tactical choices, and playing with world class players day in day out in training, I have no doubt that he'll learn - and quickly.
Rooney on the other hand, has nothing more to gain on the physical side (almost a medical sensation he's only 17 (or 18, I dunno)), so he's got less potential for improvement than Ronaldo IMO.

No it was a fluke and I have never claimed otherwise.

Interesting points here highlights that had he come 'quietly' early summer for a much smaller maybe 'private' fee the hype would have been nil and the expectations much different.
Undoubted quality and be fascinating to see how he copes with the pressures of playing for Utd at such a tender age.
Incidentally whats the situation with him regarding 'home' . Is he allowed to get back to family etc in Portugal it being only a couple of hours away.? Or is he kept under lock and key in Manchester by MIFergi and his agents!?

But you must realise that many of these in-swinging free-kicks are meant to cause maximum panic, whereby the merest touch, be it from an attacker or defender, might lead to a goal, or that in the confusion, with flailing legs all over the shop, the keeper can only commit himself at the last minute to prepare for any change of direction of the ball should any outfielder connect.
And if the ball is whipped in swiftly enough, & a bend is added, many a time they go directly into goal, & therefore worth a try, as can be seen by Ronaldo's & Murphy's attempts, & as have been seen so many times b4.
As such, I wouldn't consider such attempts as pure flukes as the intention is always there!

The boy is 18, not twelve. I surely enjoyed every
moment i got away from my family at that age.
He is probably playing Ps2 til four in the morning
and having icecream for breakfast.

He has showed that he can handle the pressure and looks very comfortable playing in the premier league, i am sure he will cope perfectly well.
As for his "vulnerable" age, as said he is 18 not 12, you keep trying every angle you can to find the negatives i am sure it makes you feel better. I for one am more than happy with his progress so far and feel he will go on to do great things for the club.
With regards to the "lock and key" comment, if there is one manager in the league who knows how to look after the younger players at the club then thats Fergie, his record is unmatched and above any little dig you may attempt to make. Whether you like it or not Ronaldo is one of the rising stars of the game and he plays for us. Being a Gunner i can understand why you think he may bottle it, after all thats all you see year after year but i am sure Ronaldo will go on to shine.. time will tell.

I've read a few reports which mention that he has his Mum and sister living with him here, so not so lonely I'd guess but it's touching to see your concern for his well being.
