Darwin Núñez | Liverpool player | Sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shish

He still won’t start for us. Unless we’re playing a really shite team it’s gonna be the same front three since Gakpo is in there to basically be what Firminio was. Nunez playing at CF really doesn’t fit the way Klopp’s system works. He can’t play on the right and unless we’re dropping Diaz he can’t play on the left so he’s gonna move from fifth to fourth in the pecking order ahead of Jota .

I Reckon the plan all along for this season was to have him start the European games and come on as impact sub for every Prem game as he causes havoc against tired legs similar to Garnacho for us (who like Darwin looks half the player when starting).

Klopp just doesn't seem to be able to Leave Gakpo out no matter what and with Endo now in the side it has pushed gakpo back upfront leaving basically Nunez, Jota and Diaz all fighting for LW and sub appearances.
 
You would've bet on him to miss those two chances last season. Scary player if he can combine his speed and power with that type of finishing.
 
Nunez is proving to be a good scorer this season. Liverpool has the best attacking players (Diaz, Salah, Jota & Nunez) in the Premier league. If 1 of them doesn't score the other will score. Newcastle is very strong at home still lose to Liverpool. Liverpool without centre back VVD still able to beat Newcastle. Most teams including Man City depend on 1 or 2 players to get the goals. Liverpool has 4 players capable of scoring in any game. If Haaland doesn't score in every game Man City will struggle to win a game. If Haaland doesn't score more than 30 goals Man City may not win the title. Liverpool has no such problem. If Salah doesn't score Nunez will score. If Nunez doesn't score Diaz will score. If Diaz doesn't score Jota will score. Any of the front 3 are capable of scoring including the back up.
 
Turns out he can score goals. Hate to admit it, but two top-class finishes - we don't have that in our arsenal any more. Martial would have fallen over and broken his ear, or pulled a muscle in his toe

Are you saying City struggle to score goals? They have Alvarez, Foden, Silva and Grealish all able to chip in with decent amount of goals each, and even Rodri score some goals. They've just bought Doku too.

There is not a chance Liverpool can compete with City this year.

You are overrating their team a lot, City doesn't have any problems scoring goals, they won league title without a CF already.

DIaz has scored 4,4,2 league goals for Liverpool. He has scored more than 10 league goals twice in his career, once in Portugal and other time in Colombian league.
Jota has scored 9,15,7,1 league goals for Liverpool. Scored more than 10 league goals 3 times in his career, once in PL, Once in Championship and once in Portugal league.

Salah is just awesome, he will score or assist lot of goals and will carry their attack, Nunez is just a mystery player, Nunez scored vs Newcastle and he is proving to be good scorer this season? He might well be and might go on to score 30+ league goals but at this point he has scored in 1 out of 3 league games (tbf to him he was a sub in all games).

Arsenal have the second best attack after City in the league.
 
It was two very good finishes, which is pretty much what he was lacking last year. It bodes well for him, if he can get his confidence up a bit. Still need to see if he can consistently finish like that, and if he can be effective against deeper sides, but he will be a good option to have in many situations for Liverpool.

Newcastle should have comfortably won that game, they weren't ruthless enough and paid the price. They were controlling the game until a defensive mistake and then fell apart.

Liverpool never failed to surprise me.. when you expect them to win, they lose, when you expect them to lose, they win.
 
Still think he reminds me of a young Cavani who was an extremely erratic finisher at times but a nightmare for defenders with his movement and physical qualities. Just keeps getting on the end of things, will be some comedy moments but also goals and make the opposition work.

Fundamentally dissimilar player evnthough Klopp is using him in Divock's old role.
Liverpool paid £85m because thes ridiculous amount of shooting chance he's capable of getting himself into.
Divock didn't have that in him.

ETH would do well to show the Geordie v Dipper match at Carrington and install in the players that losing a man doesn’t mean you have to capitulate.
Away from home against a team like Newcastle with their support, you can’t deny it it was a great performance by the dippers and one we should learn from.
 
Think he's looked really good in pre season so don't get why Klopp has him as 5th choice. Reckon he could have a stormer of a season.

He will always have detractors scrutinising every failed touch he makes, but he has goals in him.
 
I read yesterday that Liverpool offered Nunez to Atletico in exchange for Joao Felix this summer, if true Klopp cant rate him very highly.
 
Cocked up two one-on-ones last night but, on top of his usual bull in a china shop gig, he managed two very tidy assists. Starting to look like an actual football player.

Averaging 1.5 G+A per 90 minutes.

And his overall game has really stepped up. Doing a lot of good work besides getting on the end of chances.

Having him and Salah on the pitch together is looking like a great dynamic so far.

He'll always have a donkey touch in him here and there, but so did Suarez and he got by anyway.

Coaching. Liverpool’s ability to buy players and advance their careers is in direct contrast to what we’ve seen at United for the past decade. There is the odd dud at Liverpool, but they’re the exception.

The race to call Núñez a flop was peak ‘banter-era’ fandom. It was as hysterical as it was inaccurate. He’s a genuine talent playing under a world class manager.
 
Nunez wasn't as bad last season as it might have seemed and he isn't as good this season as it may seem.

His style means that he has periods in which he looks like a world beater and periods in which he looks like a donkey. The narrative that the donkey-ish periods are mostly behind him is premature. Imo, he will revert to type in some highly important games, especially in the 2nd half of the season. Time will tell.

He is not even a standard starter for you, so I would say it's nowhere near proper season, but Klopp can get a lot qualities even from such a weird and inconsistent player.

Agree. He has elite level of athleticism. You would expect him to closer to Haaland, but he still seems very erratic to be that deadly. His explosiveness means that he can't be contained, so he can't be useless forever especially playing a side that can create chances, opening through chaos like Klopp Liverpool. S even currently he's not a player Klopp would start, or leave on the pitch full 90 minutes all the time.

In this situation Núñez isn’t relied upon to always be the game-changer - which he has already been this season.

He’s being used really well by Klopp. Rotated in and out of the team - just like the other forwards apart from Salah who is too good to rotate.

Great summary, I would say that Bielsa really had an impact on him too. He’s clear developed under him in a lot of details. I credit Bielsa a lot for his development in all-round game.

Per 90 stats have always been a stupid way to assess players who mainly feature as subs.

Callum Wilson has a 1.49 G+A per 90 in just about the same number of minutes as Darwin in the Prem this season, though Darwin's total includes more assists than Wilson.

Imagine getting a tune out of a player they bought for 80M directly after scoring 34 goals in 2841 minutes the season before. He might even become a regular starter for them soon. The coaching at Liverpool is unbelievable....

7 in all competitions and 4 of those were the winning goal. He seems to score at the right time and has turned into a super sub under Klopp but I expect him to start being a regular starter at some point. Klopp is making all the right moves with this guy.

He got more total goals last season than any United striker, and he'll do the same this season. For all the slagging off of this lad, the reality is that he'd probably have been a good signing for United.
