I'm not sure how he was supposed to get two hands on a swerving shot. May be a touch around the corner was the minimum he could have achieved.

Being off the line narrows angles.

The first was 5 yards to his side and he reacted really slowly. You don't close angles down from a free kick into the box, that's when your one on one with no defenders to help. I was a keeper for many years, not at a great level. Trust me he will be extremely disappointed with both goals. On a positive his handling from crosses and distribution looks very good. Early days but that will not have helped his confidence and that's half the battle at a club like utd.

Reacted slow for the second goal, not at fault for the first.

On the plus, he's plucked 2 crosses from the air with great authority and he's showed some cracking distribution

my thoughts really. First goal the cross was inch perfect and the second was close enough to get a hand to it. I expected a bit of nerves and a few mistakes though so not surprised.

Let's hope he can pull off a few decent saves this half and put the first behind him.

He looks to short to be one of the best ... He's like reina ... Just won't get to some shots simple as. Shhh well.

Casillas is shorter and was one of the best for years. He should have stopped the 2nd, even Barthez could have reached for that

The font City use for their Player Names is hideous. It's like its printed on by a type writer.

Lack of reach wasn't the problem his complete failure to move his feet was. Really poor goalkeeping.

Mistakes are bound to happen, better now than later, it's how he copes with those mistakes that counts!

i know this is not a major trophy or competition but hopefully this is the first winner's medal of many to come for de gea. he recovers well during the second half and made 2 good saves. he will get better with experience.

Made a couple of good solid saves in the second half, and his distribution is excellent.

Think the second goal took him by surprise, he looked so sure in stopping the ball and then bam in the net. He will learn from it.

Really should have done better with that shot. The stats say he conceded the most from range in La Liga last season, so that's one area we must improve him on.

Otherwise he was given a tough test today and came out with some credit. He looks such a quality all round keeper with brilliant distribution, and he isn't the finished article yet. We should believe in him.

Edwin was one of the best ever goalkeepers yet even he was caught out by Messi's shot in the CL Final, so there's no way I'm criticising a young goalie on his debut.

Nothing to suggest he won't be class. The Dkezo type goal could happen to any keeper (and has happened to the best of them).

Second one was definitely a mistake. He was back-peddling far too much, and when the shot came in all his momentum was going backwards and he couldn't move his feet properly to make up for the late swerve. If he'd been on his toes he would've been able to get across to it.

No big deal though, I'm sure he'll make the odd mistake in his first few games (and to a lesser extent for the first couple of years) through inexperience and nerves. As long as he quickly cuts them out to an acceptable level.

How many times has he played with Rio and Vidic during preseason? SAF always does this to new signings. Though he knows his starting 11, he does some odd pairings in preseason and just throw the guys he had in mind in games that can have some pressure.
He will be alright, but the pains will be there. He is fecking good at Penalties though, so was hoping to see him vs City

At the end of the day they were both the kind of mistake that young keepers are prone to make. The first was a decision making error, it's something he'll pick up as he gains experience.

The second was him failing to get his body behind the shot, again something that historically he's had a problem with and that we'll coach into him I'm sure.

It wasn't disastrous.

I thought he looked impressive in the second half. Prepare for the vultures to label him a flop though.

He doesn't just hoof the ball upfield - he always aims for one of our players.

i thought he played well. his defense didn't do him any favors in the first half and that shot from dzeko would have paralyzed anyone.

I think he should've done better with the first goal, but I can't really blame him for Dzeko's one.

Had a good second half and recovered well. Better he gets his mistakes out of his system here than in a bigger game. Well done David.

I thought that, overall, he did all right. You can see the potential's there and given the expert guidance he'll get at United, this lad will be mustard. Eric Steele has been really clever in discussing De Gea's shortcomings even before he put on the shirt for the first time as it served to remove a lot of the pressure on the boy and also to level the expectations of the fans who wanted a new VDS. However, I wouldn't mind betting that Lindegaard starts against the Albion next week. The Charity Shield is one thing; 3 points away is another.

Didn't take long for this thread to blow up again. Yes, he could've done better perhaps. I was sitting on my hands waiting for him to make a save or two.

I too thought it would've been interesting, but feck me...when Nani scored I went insane.

I don't blame him at all for the first goal. The second goal was certainly saveable but it was swinging all over the shop and there would be nowhere near as big a deal made of it were that a more experienced keeper. He looked confident on collecting corners and his distribution was very impressive. Also made two excellent reflex saves in the second half, this wasn't a disaster but not a blinder either. 6/10.

Maybe he should have come to punch the ball on the first goal.

Maybe he should have been quicker to the second goal.

It is certain that his defenders should have dealt with both and were more at fault for both goals.

If it were Van Der Sar who had let in these two goals in the same fashion (and it DID happen on occasion), then everyone would have been blaming the defenders not the keeper. Until De Gea has earned some confidence from the fans, I have a feeling the fans will be circling ready to pounce on any signs of weakness.
