I personally think his confidence is shot. He has always seemed mentally weak, but he’s never been in the firing line as much as he is now, even in the days where he couldn’t catch a ball from a corner.

Yeah, I always thought he was treated harshly by Spain. But in hindsight, he just never had the confidence to play for Spain (higher standards than United over the last decade). And now, we're finally starting to look better overall, and his lack of confidence is coming to the fore again.

I stopped blaming De Gea for the blunders, the awful passing, the complete lack of strength and command around his box. Known issues for years yet he still gets picked. Players still pass to him and then end up getting hospital passes or have to transition to defense immediately because he can't pass. I would love to get a breakdown from David about some of his mistakes. He’s had a few like the one last night where it seems like he gets down late and misjudges where the ball is even though it’s moving slowly.

He's not entirely responsible, but he's played a key role in unravelling what was a positive season.

There are absolutely some referees who, rightly or wrongly, wouldn't have blown the whistle after that. Equally, I am not 100% certain that VAR would have overturned it had they decided not to give a foul. You don't want to be leaving it up to the referee/VAR to make the "right" call when you don't have to. Even if it was a foul by Antonio, it's still much better if your goalkeeper can take charge of that situation by just claiming the ball.

Yeah, this. Just be stronger, don't give the ref a decision to make. Don't make the opposition think you are soft as feck where they then target you every time. It's past that point now and everyone knows what De Gea is and isn't. Not like he could start shit talking on pens now for example, it wouldn't have any impact. Everyone knows he is weak in the air, so teams will always put him under extra pressure and they just pick on his weakness.

Just do what Fabianski did and clear the whole lot out. I also remember Henderson doing this early on and people actually called him wreckless for it. I think he cleaned out one of his players in the process.

We've got to the point where every time a loopy ball drops into our six yard box there's basically zero expectation that our keeper will do what 99% of top goalkeepers would do and catch the ball above the strikers head. It was the same shit against Villa just two games ago, when people tried to blame Sabitzer for not giving him enough protection. We're basically completely reliant on the ref to give us a soft free-kick or De Gea maybe getting a weak fist to the ball (which often lands in a dangerous area anyway). It's a shocking state of affairs and a huge handicap for the team.

Indeed, nothing will happen. We don't have a capable backup keeper. I'm not sure if Butland is good enough. Ten Hag obviously doesn't rate him as a starter even after all those De Gea howlers. We had a few good number two's in the past: Romero, Kuszczak, Van der Gouw, even Lindegaard.

Remember that Arsenal game last season? He thought he was fouled so he just rolled around on the ground while play was going and their player volleyed it into an empty goal. fecking disgraceful thing to do as a goalkeeper, inexcusable. The goalkeeper doing it is a disgrace, and he does it regularly.

Also he had his cowardly moment in the top 4 chase where he pulled out of claiming the ball I'm a 50/50 vs Chelsea in 18/19 and it costed us top 4. A serially soft as feck goalkeeper.
