David Moyes | West Ham in talks with him for managerial job

Wonderful day. I remember the news started to come through on the bank holiday Monday. What a relief, what a day.

Man I remember this day so clearly. It was a couple days before an exam I had. I was at home, supposed to spend the entire day studying, but the news about the rumors broke around when I woke up, and I was too excited for a good while after that to focus on my work. I just keep re-checking various sources to see if it had happened yet

The day that Moyes got the axe is up there in my top 10 moments as United fan for sure. It just seemed like we were doomed to years of him, with the way he spoke, combined with the massive amount of support he still seemed to have from large parts of the fanbase.

Not sure where i would rank it if at all. But it was definitely a great day and a big relief, despite sacking him being the obvious thing to do. I didn't think United would actually have the balls to do it, luckily Ed Woodward ignored all the nonsense and pulled the trigger.

And then after liberation day we got lvg

Its like being freed from a German pow camp to be handed over to the japs

I think this is the most remarkable thing that ever happened in English football. It goes far further than Ali Dia. How he managed to trick his way into the finest room in England is something that I will always respect him for. Taking a piss by showing up in work out clothes on official days, reading that leadership book on the plane, bidding on Fabregas as if we were Everton etc. And what about panic buying Fellaini on our last day. How can you do that without being embarrassed with yourself? Really showing your contact net there. I can imagine what the conversation must have been like in the board room.

- So David, we're short of time here, do you have any players you'd like to add?
- What about Fabregas?
- Barca didn't reply
- What? It must have been a week ago I asked them. And Thiago, nothing on him?
- You have asked them about Thiago??
- Yes, £5m up front.
- You may NOT contact a club without talking to the board! David, is there any player you'd like to add?!
- Ehh what's the price limit? £15-18m?
- Let's leave those discussions to the people in charge of that, just give us your targets!
- Eeeh I haven't got anyone in mind really. I'm still in the process of analyzing the team, finding the correct balance.
- David, we need to find a transfer target.
- Ok, I see. Just let me make a phone call. I know some people who owe me a couple of favors ;)

The scars he left in this club can be irreversible. The most obvious one is we're still paying him for that 6 year contract.

Moyes always tries to imply he inherited a club in decline fro youth system all the way to first team. Time has proved him very wrong and teh one young player he had a stiffy over in Januzaj has been struggling greatly at bottom of the table club.

Here's a handy XI we could have fielded today mostly of players Moyes didn't rate, fancy or see potential in apart from De Gea and Carrick

-----------------De Gea-----------------
Valencia----Smalling---M.Keane---Ashley Young
----------Jones---Carrick--------
Rashford----Lingard/Kagawa-------Zaha
---------------Chicharito-----------------

Moyes never rated Valencia or Young?

I don't think we are - it was widely reported that this "6 year contract" he likes to bleat on about was on the condition of him qualfying for us for the Champions League every season - if he failed to do that then the club could sack him for compensation equal to one season rather than the whole remainder of his contract. That is why we had to wait for that Everton game before axing him, as that was the game when it became impossible to qualify and thus the clause came into play. Have you seen anything different to that?

To be fair, LVG was a coach with a good enough track record, coming off the back of exceeding expectations with Netherlands at the world cup. There was definitely reason enough to get excited. Of course, how it ended up going was a different matter altogether, but that's more or less been the story of the last 3 years, so much excitement and promise, never fully being lived up to.

Seriously? You got a source for that?

Also, is it true that LvG vetoed Kroos?

I'm just doing calculations. He's signed a 6 year contract. Don't understand why you bring LvG into this.

I have not heard anything about his contract more than it was a pretty long one. Reports here and there are no facts. Regardless of that it's just a fecking detail. He destroyed the club, why make excuses?

That's exactly the point. Moyes was constantly leaking stuff to the press after results weren't going his way that he was shocked at how in decline the club was and how he'd have to rebuild it from bottom to top starting with the youth system. In other words he was just trying to cover his own ass for being miles out of his depth

I'll be honest I wasn't particularly enamoured with how the dutch played apart from one freak result against Spain. They were very dull too

After putting up with dreary bollocks for 11 months Van Gaal wasn't too bad in comparison, on and off the pitch. Granted the football was boring but CL qualification, an FA cup win and some great results against the top sides were more than Moyes would have done.

I look back on it as our lesson that you don't go from title winners, to shite, to title winners again.

There's a stop gap of mediocrity and that was our two years under LVG (with an FA Cup to sweeten it a bit).

I'll always find it highly ironic that David Moyes shares a birthday with the late Johan Cruyff.

Except he was right about the youth system as can be seen from us doing a complete overhaul since. I don't know how you can conclude from simply Rashford that his criticism of the youth system was invalid.

Dont see what you mean. They're both very similar if you think about it. Johan Cruyff is an influencial figure in the football landscape, won trophies his whole career, Ball'on Dor winner 3 times, won the European Cup as both player and manager and considered one of the greatest players to ever play the game

And David Moyes played football as well.

What specifically was he right about in your opinion?
