David Moyes | West Ham in talks with him for managerial job

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/37235209

Just signed a midfielder.

Sunderland have signed Gabon international midfielder Didier Ndong from Lorient for £13.6m (16m euros).

The 22-year-old has signed a five-year deal at the Stadium of Light after 18 months at the French club.

The fee is the highest Sunderland have paid up front for a player.

"I am excited to meet everyone at the club, to see the stadium and of course the fans, who I have heard so many good things about. Today is the most beautiful day of my life," he said.

"Maybe the Sunderland fans don't know me yet, but I promise they will quickly discover that I will give everything for them and the club."

The upfront fee surpasses the £13m Sunderland paid for Asamoah Gyan in 2010, but the deal that brought Steven Fletcher to the club in 2012 included add-ons potentially taking the cost to £14m.

Ndong started his career at Tunisian side CS Sfaxien, playing 40 games, before signing for Lorient in January 2015 and making 46 appearances for the Ligue 1 club.

He has 18 caps for Gabon after making his debut in 2012.

Yeah, I still have Burnley, Bournemouth and Hull as relegation favourites, despite Hull's good start. Sunderland is just the new Coventry, there's always 3 or 4 teams who're worse every season.

that would be my 3 choices as well, much as I'd love Micky Phelan to silence any critics by keeping Hull up against all odds. I think Hull and Burnley haven't invested enough in their squads and Bournemouth as much as they did well last season, I think that they will be found out this season

Moyes says something positive

I need actual proof that this has ever actually happened. And by positive I don't mean a cautiously-optimistic carefully worded response, as I think that is about Moyes limit.

We will do everything in our power to make it difficult for xxxxx. That's positive coming from Moyes.

a midget

no in seriousness, he needs help. Im surprised they didn't pickup someone like Kanu-Robson on a free
He scored 15 in the league and 18 in all comps last year and has pretty much got 10+ in every season of his career. He is the best striker quite easily among the relegation candidates. He already has 2 in 3 this season. If a consistent goalscorer is what they need then surely Kanu-Robson who has scored more than 5 goals only once in his career is not what they need. Sure he only got 3 in the Championship last season, what on earth suggests he'd offer consistent goalscoring in the PL?

Defoe is almost 34. You cannot rely on a 34-year old to deliver you goals all season long unless he is Zlatan.

He was 33 last season and did it and is still doing it at the start of this season. He had his second best league record last season, he isn't just turning to shit this season. Even at 34 Defoe is still miles better than the other relegation strikers or anyone Sunderland could hope of bringing in. For a relegation candidate Defoe is a Zlatan. Someone like Robson-Kanu sure as shit isn't the solution.

You can without coc, cl, fa cup and only league. Not if they go far at any other comp though, although it's not likely
Yep with Smug Dave in charge I would not expect them to do much in cup competitions. Players will simply let him down, otherwise his genius would win both cups easily.

Dithering Dave probably couldn't find anyone he has worked with earlier.

Sunderland fans going ape.

Loads saying he's after putting pressure on himself with this window.....Heard that before somewhere
He never changes  I can genuinely see them being the lowest scoring side this season.

Nah none of this is Moyes fault, it was all Ellis Short's doing. Just like it was Wodowards fault and Kenwright at Everton letting him down every year for 11 years.

Failed to get M'Vila and just failed to get another goalkeeper.
Everyone keeps blaming the boards but it has happened at each club he has been at...

Is that the same washed up striker who just had the second best goalscoring season of his career?

So he's relying on a 34 year old washed up striker for goals.

Should be fun.

If Defoe stays fit and can deal with all the matches (which might be unlikely), they they should be fine. I still think Defoe could play for a top 4 side, he's still very good and scores lots of goals

There's a reason he's playing for Sunderland.

And it's not uncommon for old players to suddenly have an unusually good season before tapering off completely. Park 10/11 comes to mind.

Defoe isn't washed up. He's scored like 16 goals last season.

I suppose he could play Januzaj as a striker. He did decent there for us and even bagged himself a goal or two from what I recall before getting (stupidly) loaned out to Dortmund.

Defoe has been alternating between decent and shit season for ages now, and he doesn't have an exactly stellar injury record.

Tbf to Moyes, strikers, especially for relegation battling teams, is a tough market, but not getting at least some bodies in is irresponsible. He'll have to count on one striker being fit and firing (somewhat) all the way to January.

Dithering Dave. When Everton fans warned us, we laughed it off as sour grapes. This guy is woeful in the morning transfer market.

It could work out well for us, Janujaz may get some minutes playing more centrally, score some goals, and get his confidence back.

Disgusted with M'Vila thinking Moyes was going to sign him. He needs to conduct extensive scouting for 2-3 years and evaluate the player before making a move, like any truly top tier manager (and Moyes belongs to the VERY top tier of managers) would have done.

Trouble is, he gets a striker and he doesn't perform, they could still get relegated and he'd not be able to blame the players. If he keeps squad more or less in tact he can keep the 'I'm a great, truly great manager but the players are just too crap and they don't even deserve to look at me' narrative which he has been doing since he joined Sunderland.

This shows that Moyes have no knowledge of any other player apart from the usual easy prey "Ex club"

A good manager worth his salt would have watched many games, having build up a vast amount of knowledge all these years, but 20 years in top flight and Donald Love, Januzaj, Mcnair, Osman as the only candidate he named. It's like he knows nothing apart from the team he managed before. dress it up as you like but many lesser teams have done well unearthing gems from Championship / South America instead of going the easy way out of collecting rejects.

I agree that relying on an aging striker and not getting anyone else in is foolish from Moyes, but calling Defoe 'washed up' is very harsh.

He scored 18 goals in 33 games last season, and has 2 goals in 3 games thus far this season...

He's a brilliant natural striker imo, and his instinct and ability to find room seems to've actually improved somehow (hard work, good genes etc).

And he's still 33, everyone keeps saying 34.
