It rather provides a reasonable rebuttal to the suggestion that a hypothetical Germany win wasn’t a foregone conclusion, should have we pretended that they got through the group stage and saved this World Cup final from being partly contested by one of the Championship level quality sides waiting to be fed to Belgium or France like lambs to the slaughter.

Christ. England fans have had nothing to be happy about for the last decade or so, been absolutely trash and have been realistic in knowing we are shite. The one time we get a bit of luck in a tournament and ride on it and everyone else gets their knickers in a twist. Germany won the last world cup ffs, we've waited 30 years for a bloody semi final.

Thought from the warm up games they'd have a good shot - the self defeating "why always us" attitude that plagues half of England didn't seem present in this new generation of players - they're just going out there and playing like the good bunch of players they are. You shouldn't be surprised. It's just attitude. The reason Germany always won because they knew they would. The reason England didn't was because they knew they wouldn't.
I think Belgium are the only real threat - if France beat them then England win the World Cup.

Oh I agree, it's more in terms of the approach to the game. You know they have the potential to click even if they're off, so you cant be complacent against them or be anything other then fully on form. Against Sweden, England had bits of sloppiness and bad finishes but they were still beyond comfortable. That's what I mean. Sweden and Russia fully deserve their place, but the potential of performance for them will still have you dominating against them, while it's not the case against the other 2.
I never thought I'd see the day when England were a more progressive, forward thinking team than Man Utd, the confidence in posession and the movement and pressing of this England side is great to watch and whatever happens from this point they've done really well.

France or Belgium would comfortably beat England in 90 minutes. I really don't think the English defense can handle either team's attack. The winner of France-Belgium is taking the WC IMO (edge to France) I think it will be France-Croatia in the final.
