Not if you're confident of him signing the contract or if the deal is close to being done.

Nonsense. I think the club is confident, if you listen to the journos with inside information talking about how happy he is at the club, how happy his family is with him being out of the intense Spanish spotlight and how confident he is that United will have an even more superstudded cast in the coming years, it's just standard negotiations and Real's name being in the mix is classic Mendes. just look at how he used United's link in Ronnies latest contract despite Ronaldo having the biggest profile in world football.

He'll sign another contract, it'll make him the highest paid goalkeeper in the world, whether he sees it out is another question.

We put our faith in him now its time he does the same for us, probably the biggest signing we can make for the next seasons ahead

I was never considering he will leave, but lately I'm starting to worry. LVG went from "I don't hink there is a problem" with "Everything is possible in football".

What's the point of spending 150m one summer, if you lose your best player the next?

What do you mean, I am sure we are not trying to get rid of him or offering him a poor deal. It's up to De Gea if he wants to stay or go, and ultimately there is only so much we can do about it.

This is what happens when you don't show you can challenge for the title 2 years in a row. De Gea won't be the only one if we don't start to turn things around next season

If he leaves, we'll sign another good GK and get on with it. People acting like it will be the end of the world, we have lost far better players in the past. Maybe it's time for us to reconsider our transfer policy and focus on players that are not of Iberian and South American origin. Keeping De Gea will also say a lot about whether Manchester United have the ability to keep their best players. It should be a thing of pride for the club because selling a player you'd like to keep is the definition of a selling club.
Finding goalkeepers with as much potential and as young as De Gea is an incredibly hard thing to do and at the moment the closest thing to that is Curtois who we will not get.

Not now please. I've been on the fence on this one. We cant let him go. I dont see him finishing his career here though, but I'd take another 5 years please.

Lloris surely cost more than that?

He did: £11.9m including add-ons (assuming these are all paid, which seems likely).

It makes me wonder if the other GK prices quoted in that table also exclude add-ons. Excluding add-ons in player fees has always struck me as a dodgy practice.

Brilliant video.

This was my view initially. I still hope you're right.

Naturally I'm hoping he stays but as so often I'm afraid the lure (money) of Real Madrid will be irrestable, even for an Altetico lad like our Dave.
I highly doubt Madrid will pay him more than we'd stump up.

Totally agreed.

Why? Real has constantly out bid out anyone in terms of wages bar Barcelona maybe. We might be able to pay the same amount for wages as they do but are we willing?
Ed Woodward and what he said about stopping the best players going to Spain and wanting the best players at United. It seems to be a different ball game at the club since Gill left. We want to keep DDG and I can't see wages being the problem.

As every day passes I get more pessimistic about this situation.
Will be gutting to lose him as good as his at such a young age for a goalkeeper.
Maybe he's waiting to see if we get back into CL before committing to a new long term deal. Who knows eh

Seems almost inevitable that he'll be leaving in the summer:(

Perhaps I'm naive but I don't think it'll come down to money.

De Gea index updated in the OP with a slight drop compared to last week, although the Yes camp did drop below 70% during the week.

The false (?) news that he had signed a contract this week firmed the index a little, but the damage had already been done.

Nervous times, but I'm still standing firm.

Thats why I said wages won't be a problem. Think we'd be willing to pay him almost anything and can't see Madrid topping that. We'll see but I still think he'll sign and thats based on nothing other than reports about him loving it here.

I've changed back so now it's exactly 70-30.

Well my point was that from DDG's point of view it won't come down to money. I have no doubts we'll chuck the kitchen sink at him to try to persuade him to stay/protect his transfer value.

I hope you've been keeping notes so we can see a graph when this is all over

Don't even care if he leaves any more, I just want an adequate world class keeper as his his replacement. I'm talking Cech or Lloris, not Valdes.

David I know your gf is fine but man get her to move to Manchester! Put your foot down David. You're Athletico. Here it's great because you get to be a top goalkeeper AND you get more touches of the ball then an average midfielder. At Madrid (hints in the first three letters), you won't see much of the ball and worse still, there are already better divers then you at the club. feck them. Just sign the contract man

So who is available to be his replacement, then?

If he really wants to go then that will be that...and it seems like that's the way it's going. It's never a good sign when van Gaal is 'hoping he will stay' on a fortnightly basis.

Presumably he would feel he has more chance of success at Real than he would at United, and it's a chance to go back to Madrid. The draw of playing with Ronaldo, Bale, Rodriguez, a fairly solid back four and a manager who almost guarantees semi-finals in the CL every year.

Hopefully the cycle continues where his former club steps it up a bit after he leaves. Despite the great form and point saving displays over the last 3 seasons, I don't think he's completely irreplaceable. Improving defensively will sort us out just as much as keeping De Gea. Ideally we'd be doing both, but I'd feel fairly confident if the back four improves and we grab ourselves a fairly solid keeper to replace him. I like Valdes and always thought he was vastly underrated, but I'd prefer it to be a position which was held down by someone going right into their best years. I'm not sure Valdes will stick around for too long (at any club) unless he's winning something.

If you're going to leave though, get us a decent fee Dave.

Hopefully we will sign him to a new contract with a £50m release clause. Otherwise Real may just wait another year and get him on a free.

I am increasingly convinced that he will leave. Never a good sign when your first choice player has 17 months left on his deal and Real Madrid are monitoring him.

always thought he could leave if Real step up. The signing of Valdes always was suspicious to me. Now he still hasnt signed, which is sad. I guess he is as good as gone
