At least it's getting resolved early. Gives us time to sort out a new goalkeeper (or stick with Valdes :nervous:). Cech please!

Big blow though. No way would we have finished fourth without De Gea. This could destabilise our whole defence and make next season a real struggle :(

Not a surprise. Hope we bring a replacement in quickly.

I really hate Madrid now. I used to dislike them after Ronaldo, but the past few weeks have proved to me they're an awful bunch of cnuts.

They're a horrible club. Ridiculously spoiled fanbase that physically attack their own 'underperforming' players and are run on government money. What I'd give to see their empire collapse one day..

While I’m sure it’s not De Gea’s main reason for leaving, the fact that he’s often had to compensate for a fairly poor defence this season will hardly have enticed him to stay.
Being in net and saving shots is what he's there for, Cheesy. ffs man.

It makes no sense the reason he wants to go is because he's had to do his job.

Also, you could add that it's been our defence that has made him the keeper he is today.

Goodluck winning anything in Spain with Barcelona playing the way they do and CR7 with about 1-2 years left at the top.
It might make sense for him personally but generally I'd call it a bad career move

It’s probably not too bad a move for him. As much as Real Madrid can be a volatile club, it’s arguably not as difficult as a GK as we’ve seen with Casillas once you’ve got yourself established.

While we’re hoping that we’re on the up again, he probably is still likely to have a greater chance of success there, and he’ll be getting more money, in a country that’s his home and is probably a more enjoyable place for someone who’s incredibly rich to live.

As disappointing as it is to see him go, and to see Real Madrid take another one of our top talents, it’s probably a fairly sensible career move for him.

Phew! Glad i put my bet on for him to go to Madrid this morning instead of leaving it till now. Easiest £20 I'll ever make!

Think he's going to be in for a surprise at that circus. Best of luck to him though, can't possibly fault him for wanting to go back to madrid, and he could have made much more of a deal about it than he did.

Losing de Gea won't be an issue for us, it's the defence that needs sorting out

Join the club. Before i joined this forum, i had an idea that Real Madrid was the second team of United fans. I think i got that wrong.

True. Although it must be a tad frustrating for him when he’s in front of a defence who’s incredibly inferior to him, and he’s having to bail out.

As I said, it’s hardly the main reason he’ll be going, but it’s hardly something that was going to sway his mind in the opposite direction either.

Replace him for his country yes. Not Real Madrid

Atletico developed him, gave him games as a teenager and let him go join United to follow his dreams. Im not sure but I think he's said before that he cried when he left them.

He's very unlikely to disrespect Atletico and their fans to join their great local rivals and he definitely wont do it when Atletico Madrid are just as good an option like they are now. He'd have to be a very special type of person to do that. As I said before 9 players have ever played for both Madrid teams and few of them could be desribed as top players like De Gea, few were academy products, few were in the last 10 years...

Its like us signing Joe Hart after he has a spell playing for Valencia. It wouldnt happen and if it did, it would cause outrage

I don't know pal, think you might be over complicating it. I think he'll be a Real player by the end of the month.

4 seasons? We won the league and lost a league title on goal difference in two of those seasons.

If we had a more experienced keeper in that first season, we could've edged that one as well. After all we only lost it on goal difference. What a waste of time and effort.

Been inevitable for a while i suppose.. Just hope we get Cech..

He'd want rocks in his fecking head not to be worried about the state of the squad in the next few years. I can't see this squad - without proper, structured, considered investment - winning a league or a CL in that time.

Indeed.

We're quite frankly terrible at selling players to be honest.

I suppose money is no object to us - I mean, we £10 million in the grand scheme of Manchester United is nothing... but yeah, I suppose the FM'er in me wants those numbers to look big

What's prompted all the assumptions that it's done?
Ian Ladyman and a few others say it's likely to be done. He would have signed already if he was staying, and I trust Ladyman in relation to this...
That and I'm being a pessimistic git this morning.

It's probably just us trolling him. Just when it's time for us to sign our end of the deal, we tell him to feck off cnut face. Then van Gaal and Woodward suplex him through the table. WWE style.

Disapointing but no longer upset, happened a while ago and we have every reason to believe as a team we will be stronger come end of the window

Could we swap Benzema for him? Get Cech and Valdes to compete for the spot and have Benzema score a feckton. Back to the "You score 2, we'll score 3" tradition.

:(

We should make him fight Fellaini in a Hell in a Cell match, but tell Fellaini to make sure not to break any bones or joints. Just the face. Once he's fugly, Madrid won't want him anymore. And he can join Jones, Di Maria and Fellaini in their own little corner of the dressing room.

His leaving makes perfect sense, for him. Why would anyone be surprised? Why would anyone be surprised if ANY of our players went to Madrid?

Sorting of central defence & centre midfield has needed doing & looks like being addressed this window. This will take much of the weight off whoever is our GK next season. Do this & he's no massive loss.

Seems as If Jamie Carragher had it right all along:

Victor Valdes is a very good signing for Man Utd. Be interesting to see how much De Gea eventually costs Real Madrid though.

How long before we start putting 'can't sign for Madrid unless you have over 4 years on your contract' clauses into new players contracts. Start with Depay.

Cannot believe we have left ourselves in such a weak bargaining position, we should have sold him last year if it looked like he was pining for Spain - at the very least doubled his money and locked him down. If he had another 3 years on his contract I think we could demand approximately £50m for him, as it stands we're going to get mugged and sell him for £20m. As others have said, we need to learn from this and keep talented guys in contracts. I can see exactly the same thing happening with Ander in a few years.

he had plenty of time in his career to be both a United and Madrid legend. have fun in Madrid, David. enjoy losing to Barca!

All out for Cech then is our best option. Don't want Lloris anywhere near us, he's average as they come. Can't get Cech try sign another young keeper ala De Gea.

Best of luck to the lad though, he's ben quality here and we haven't performed well enough these past 2 years to keep him.

He's been avoiding a new contract for two years ( I've read on here). Sold him last year? We'd not have finished top four IMO.

feck off, I'd rather we had him for this season than get more money last season. Whats the point in that?

Thanks for the last 4 years Dave! Don't let the Madrid fans ruin your Lambo, will you?

Sounds bitter, but I hope he has a shocker at Madrid. I absolutely adored him at United and to be fair, I understand why he'd want to go back home to his girlfriend and family - but he's annoyed the shit out of me with this silence. I know many would say "not saying anything shows respect", but I'd prefer if he just had some bollocks and just said that he wanted to go home.

I'm bitter towards Madrid in general so I tend to want Madrid to do badly anyway, so him doing badly comes hand in hand with that. We'll see how the Madrid fans react to his errors.

He's an outstanding keeper and it'll be strange not seeing him in goal next season, but he isn't irreplaceable like Ronaldo was.
