In that alternate reality it would depend who we replaced him with. He's a fantastic keeper but I'm not sure that someone like Begovic would have been such a massive drop off - he certainly would have handled corners and crosses better.
If a player wants to leave the club can't do a whole lot about it. A lengthy contract ensures you get a decent fee but if he's unhappy and wants to go somewhere else, you pretty much have to sell. You can't force him to sign a long contract. At best you can maybe persuade them to stay another year (e.g. Ronaldo).
De Gea leaving is perfectly understandable. Reverse the situation: a world class English goalkeeper, born in Manchester, is playing for Real Madrid. His girlfriend, family and friends are all back home. Man Utd (let's assume it's the United under Fergie that was winning trophies) come knocking and want him to be their number 1 for the next 10 years. Easy decision really.
The easiest one he'll ever make, tbf. This talk of "He'll regret it" is all a bit David Brent lying in bed in a Comfort Inn.
He's got great powers of prediction regarding De Gea.
That's all I'm saying, perhaps a contract with more money and a minimum fee release clause would have been sensible. Something reasonable like £40m -£50m. It absolutely sickens me that Real are going to get one of the best young keepers in the world for such a steal.
The fee doesn't really make a difference. Unless it hurts your pride to see him go for something less than 30-40 mil. We really don't need the money.
It's always been noticeable to me that David routinely said that the fans and the club appreciate him, but rarely if ever that he loved it at United. He's simply someone who keeps his own counsel (which is fine), and I think we might've been naive to expect that such a calm, pragmatic person would get overly-sentimental about our club or attached to it.
Let's not be bitter lads, he has given us a couple of great years and I am thankful for that. This could have been handled better but in the end better players have left us in the past and we have moved on.

isn't that a bit of an old argument against DDG - can't remember him flapping this season. On your suggestion of Begovic, definitely my preferred option too.

If we'd done that I predict we'd of been outside the top four this season. It was absolutely the right decision. He's gained us a lot of points.

What is the expected transfer fee?
The only thing leaving a slightly bitter taste in my mouth (if he goes) is that he hardly acknowledged the fans when he was taken off in his last game - even Falcao did that
I'm not even annoyed by his silence like some others here. What's he supposed to do if after announcing he wants to go to Real, the deal breaks down and he sees out his last year? He's been quite rightly advised to say nothing and wait for a resolution. The most decent thing he's done is made sure it got done early.

Luckily LVG has somewhat prepared for this by signing Valdes.

The real question indeed. The king of all transfer muppets certainly cannot be satisfied with announcing Valdes as a replacement, and leave it at that.
Which is what tells me that he is still undecided. It would have fueled speculation horribly if he did anything like that.
Such a shame it looks like Madrid have got their man again. It might have been a tough decision for De Gea but his silence speaks volumes and it's quite obvious now that he has just been waiting for Real to offer enough to close the deal. What sucks is that at the end of the day, we are in no way getting a fair fee for him. When Ronaldo wanted to go he signed the new deal to ensure we got a world record fee for a such a special player and just waited one more season, would that really be too much to ask of De Gea at his age when the club has helped him develop in to one of the best in his position?
Now in my opinion De Gea is in the top three keepers in the world at the moment so to lose him for £25m or so is a joke that unfortunately isn't at all amusing for us fans. Oh well, thanks for everything Dave, I think he will regret the move and soon realise how horrible the fans can be when he makes a few mistakes but never mind. The one thing that made me think we might keep him was the fact he was an Atletico boy and might not want to go to their arch rivals but apparently that's not an issue. I think DDG has done the right thing by staying quiet, it's strange that people hated Ronaldo for going public but don't like the fact that DDG has remained silent through all this. In the end I think as much as LVG would want us to believe otherwise the club have known for a while that he will leave this summer and frankly a lot of the fans have also known for months once it became clear that there is no contract being signed
Exactly. What about when we shat ourselves whenever the opposition team had a corner or just them bearing down on goal? For almost 2 seasons he was absolutely shaky. Sir Alex, Eric Steele and the fans supported him throughout. The least he could have done would be to sign a new contract and let us have a decent fee for him. I am very cynical about his reasons being family, girlfriend etc. I believe he always wanted to go to Madrid (which is fine) and just waited to see what happened with Casillas. If you look at it objectively, he did everything to make this transfer to Madrid as easy as possible for Madrid. When you think Madrid would never have supported him if he started as badly as he did with us, and he thinks it's ok to do everything to make their job easier....... this really pisses me off.
In any case, with this Barca side around, he will not be winning anything.

I think Begovic is more dominant aerially than DDG, am I wrong?
De Gea had a 100% catch rate this season. Not a single fumble.
I still believe we won't miss him as much if we have anything about us in the next transfer window. Losing a keeper shouldn't be too problematic for a club like United. Having a goalkeeper be the player of the season is problematic. A striker or midfielder ideally should be player of the year. If we sort our defence out for next season and have a decent, not even a world class keeper, we will fine imo.

Exactly. When the rumors came up that Real wanted him really badly and in the following months there was no new contract signed with us, we all knew what would be happening. There might have been the small hope that qualifying for the CL would convince him to stay but I never really felt we had much of a chance in this battle. On top of that I can understand his decision. He has the chance to move back to the city he grew up in and be close to family and friends again and on top of that play for one of the biggest and richest clubs in the world. Who wouldn't take that offer, even if he might earn a few thousand less per week.

Although it is somewhat understandable, this 'all his family and girlfriend are in Madrid' thing is way over-weighted. He is a 24-year old guy. Loads of people that age sacrifice family/social life to pursue a career a long way from their home town. Indeed, there is a whole contingent of South Americans footballers playing in Europe. Maybe he just thinks his long-term goals are more likely to be fulfilled as part of a circus act.
Im not sure on Valdes in the PL - I think teams would just target him by swinging crosses in constantly.
