Do we have any Atleti fans here? Just interested to know how he'll be received by their fans next season? Will he be booed, yeah?

I really like DDG, but I won't be hugely disappointed to see him go. He's probably the best shot stopper in the world, are very good at everything else. But I prefer my goalkeepers to have more presence and make the lives of their central defenders more predictable. VdS was the perfect example of that at United - not the quickest reactions, but always in the right place at the right time. De Gea still dithers occasionally and that means that the CBs in front of him don't always know he's going to do. Give me a steady eddy over a show-stopper, any day. It's why I'm such a huge detractor of Neuer on this forum.

I just hope Valdes isn't our number 1 next season. Cech is who I'd like.

In my opinion if he does leave he will go down in my estimation for the way the whole thing has been handled. I have no problem with him wanting to go back to Spain but after we took a chance on him at 19 and made him into the player he is now to hold us to ransom strikes me as being ungrateful and unnecessary. If he wanted to go he should have spoken to the club, signed a 2 year extension and agreed a decent minimum fee release clause (somewhere around £40m) to make sure that we at least get some good compensation for him going. Ronaldo handled it perfectly and he is quite rightly still revered by Utd fans.

Yeah, but De Gea is only 24 right now, VDS was 34 when he came here. It's depressing whatever way you look at it.

@ottosec look bud, you are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine. Everyone knew that Ronaldo would end up back in Madrid some day, much like everyone expected De Gea to one day head back to Spain, however the difference between how the two have handled the situation is night and day. Ronaldo treated the club and the supporters with respect. If you read Sir Alex Ferguson's autobiography you will see as much.
ferguson TOLD him he was going nowhere for a year due to how classless Madrid were. If Ronaldo had his way he wouldn't have been with us for that last season

As ottosec said:

Where is this "Ronaldo signed a new deal so we can get more money" bullshit coming from? He signed a new contract 2,5 years before leaving and he certainly didn't sign it so that the club can get more money.

Also, there can't be any comparition with him and DDG:

- one wants to leave to play in his home town, where his friends, family and long term girlfriend live for a club that has more money, more glamour and a team much better than ours at this time

- the other wanted to leave from a club that was probably the best in the world at that time, that was playing in a league that was giving at least 3 semifinalist every year in the CL, had won 3 pl titles on the throat and made 2 consecutive CL finals to a club that was in Barca's shadow in the league and that failed to get past the last 16th in CL for quite a few years.

Also, DDG has handled the situation better than Ronaldo did by not dropping all those hints he was leaving for months beforehand. It's weird that people are criticizing DDG for saying nothing when actually saying "I want to leave for Madrid" would usually be seen as an unprofessional move.

It is certainly gonna suck watching him be brilliant for Madrid over the next decade or so though. :(

To be honest it sounds like you are the ungrateful one. Manchester United didn't pluck him out of obscurity in the Uzbek third division. He started every game for Atletico and won the Europa League at 19 years old. What should he be grateful for? He's been a great player and you wouldn't be back in the top 4 without him. The club knew he wanted to leave months ahead and had time to bring in other keepers. He hasn't made any slavery comments. Now he wants to join a bigger club with a better chance of trophies in his hometown and be near his family.

Your are right but I will be bitter none the less, he is joining a club who won 5 leagues, 3 CL and 2 Cups in 17 years. Seeking success there, isn't a good argument.

This is spot on. It's not like Clichy, Nasri etc leaving bigger clubs, which would be embarrassing. Can't blame him for wanting to go back to his home city where his family is etc.

I don't think anyone disagrees with his reasons for leaving, but if it's true that he's lead the club to believe he'd extend depending on CL qualification and then only stayed silent, that would be a bit unprofessional. The club and the fans have every right to be disappointed in him in that case.

But I do agree the anger and revisionism is over the top. Now if he pulls a Fabregas and ends up at City in a few years...

you're just making stuff up now to be mad at him. United knew he might not sign hence brought Valdes in

Agree with this. People act like DDG owes Manchester United something. It was a mutually beneficial partnership for both sides. Would it be nice if he professed his love for us and never wanted to play anywhere else? Sure. But in this modern age of football, that's extremely rare and unlikely. He did his best while here and that's all you could ask of any player. He was our POTY 2 years running and the single biggest reason why we're back in the Champions League. I understand why fans would be upset but if this happened at any other club, it'd be perfectly reasonable to us why he'd want to go back home.

Yup, Cech would be an ideal replacement for DDG.

DDG has handled this very well imo and not come out in the press with anything at all. I like that its all being handled in house.

It will be a shame if he goes, but instead of being annoyed with him, we should be annoyed that it has come to the last year of his contract in the first place. That f*ck up will probably cost us £20m in transfer fees.

If we get Bale or Varane coming the other way it won't be completely disastrous.

I still fail to understand posts about the club being at fault for the contract coming to the last year.
If he was offered a hefty contract and it seems he will reject it how is then club at fault for the whole situation?

One thing is certain... i will never buy any Edurne albums if de Gea leaves! I will not even look at her youtube "music" videos!!!!

The chances of him staying would be significantly bigger if we had something better to offer than Moyes and keeping average flood of players. He's almost the Ronaldo of goalkeeping. He deserve PSG style contract plus reassurance that he's being in a club that will win trophies.

Series of bad decisions from our officials already undermined our position in Europe. I don't know how to explain it better... If you still cannot understand then I'm sorry but I can't help you. We've ended on 7th position once and we only managed to achieve 4th this season... You can clearly see that there can be some doubts about being supposedly the biggest club in the world and Dave with his agent have a full right to check their options for the future.

I still hope the team will be repaired and built into a football juggernaut that will compete again and our goalkeeper will see it but it may be too late for that as well.

What is the PSG style contract and I'm sure we assured him we will strengthen for the upcoming year and as I said he was offered a hefty contract I'm sure.
We were 7th but this year we finished 4th and we're on our way back.

DDG>club for you it seems.

If you can't take critique at the club that's barely my problem. Standards of the club depends also on officials, believe it or not.

If you only can write about the bad stuff and only criticize the club that's barely my problem.
Also I didnt come to you with 'my problem' or whatever for you to write "f you still cannot understand then I'm sorry but I can't help you" and "that's barely my problem" and that kind of things.

Well he probably refused to sign last year which is why it ran into his final year.

I actually reckon he will be put on bench at Madrid as they refuse to bench Casillas yet.

Yet you still write stuff like 'I still fail to understand'.

Could be. I still got hope he's in the phase of checking his options. Casillas will be 35 in May... still not an age to retire if you look at other legends like Buffon & VDS.

It isn't.

The only thing the club has done wrong is allow our team to decline to a point where we're not competing for trophies atm as if we were we'd have a better chance of keeping a hold of a player like DDG.

Beyond that neither the club nor the player has done anything wrong in this situation. This is just the way things have gone.

Well I agree.
Its not that the club just let the contract down and all of a sudden offered him a contract when they saw its going close to one year till the end.

It took him years to properly replace him. He had to be nurtured. Was basically the most talented keeper in the world when bought. United can't do that again. Buy another keeper that isn't the finished article as soon as the previous one has just come good.
Im not saying they will do that but there are good keepers out there Cech,Lloris,Leno to name a few who are more than capable of doing a job for us in goal.

Where the club is at fault is giving Mendes his own way too often.

I also reckon he'll be benched for the first handful of matches. However, I'd imagine that as soon as he gets his chance, he'll take it and be the new number one. The only thing I might be underestimating is that Benitez will need to get into the good books - and the easiest way to do this is to probably appease Iker and co.

And a club that likes to punish managers that are successful by sacking them, I was just looking over those champions league winners, it really is a circus.

In 1997 - 98 Jupp Heynckes won the champions league in his first season in charge, for this fantastic success Real Madrid sacked him.

It took the club a while to find their next winner, Gus Hiddink didn't last long nor did John Toshack but they found Vincente del Bosque who also won the champions league in his first season before winning La Liga in his second season, the champions league again in his third season and then his second La Liga championship in his fourth season. For this fantastic success over four seasons Real Madrid sacked him, Florentino Perez told BBC "Del Bosque was showing signs of exhaustion. I want to be sincere about this – it was our belief that he was not the right coach for the future." Real Madrid replaced him with the mighty Carlos Queiroz who didn't perform very well, probably Perez just wanted to troll United.

Ancelotti also managed to win a champions league in his two seasons. Benitez likes to take notes, let him write that he will be sacked if he doesn't win trophies and he will be sacked if he does win trophies.

Because then we will have an unhappy goalkeeper who will leave on a free next season.
What and getting £25m for him is okay? That's only a c£5m profit, it'd be worth keeping him for another season.
