Don't get this whole I'd rather let him leave on a free transfer rather then get a lower fee type attitude. If the player doesn't want to be here, you're not going to play him when available because he's not focussed, surely it's best just to let him go even if you only get £12-15m.

I don't even want him to stay, why keep a player against his wish? Let him join Real and have players who wants to play for United instead.

Madrid spunk millions on players every summer, on players they don't need and sometimes on players they sold and buy back again but they won't pony up for one of the best GK's in the world.

Enjoy your year on the bench Dave, a whole situation that could have been avoided with a gentleman's agreement.

I don't think these pundits understand why we are not selling De Gea. I don't think it's about trying to convince him to stay at the club, it's about that we will only sell at our own valuation.

If De Gea is going to be pussyfooting around, I am very sure the club and the fans will not care at all if he spends the entire time with the reserves. The problem is that we have not actually gotten a replacement yet.

Although I would generally be in favor of this, it would create an adverse affect on the club going forward. Agents who run football would tell their players to avoid us.

We should just sell him and buy a replacement soon. Don't want this dragging on and affecting our season.

I think we have a small chance of getting DDG to stay. That must be the only reason why Ed and LVG are handling the situation in this manner. It is a gamble for sure but given how strong DDG has been for us, it might be worth the gamble. We would have sold him long time ago if there was absolutely no chance for us to keep him.

We need get what we value him at, we have been a soft touch at selling players for years and Ed and LVG are finally taking measures to change that. It's simple, Madrid pay up or De Gea commits himself to the club, that's the only way forward in this situation now.

If we bench him on principle and lose out on a few players down the line who are influenced that much by their agents then I don't want them at the club anyway. Move for football and historical reasons, not for agents vendetta's.

Idealised and unrealistic. Transfers are all about timing and players decisions change. You have to make the player feel like he's wanted despite the contract situation.

How would tying them into a contract not make the player feel wanted? And if he's determined to run the contract down or refuses to renew, where's the incentive to make him feel wanted?

Real Madrid paid £20m for Kroos in the last year of his contract. They are not going to overpay for somebody in the last year of his contract.

We can be a soft touch or what. But fact is the current record fee for a goalkeeper is £33m. Neuer in his last year cost Bayern £18m. We are looking at £25m at best.

Glad to hear he actually wanted to play. Still think it's LvG assuming he can't be fully focused, don't see what could have gone on in training to judge his focus.

Huh? LvG also said that they all agreed it was best he didn't play and that they tried to focus his mind. DDG agreed it's best he didn't play even though he wanted too

Not expecting record numbers but I very much doubt we will sell him for less than what we paid, last year of contract or not.

If the figure is the rumoured £25 million then its totally reasonable and not an overpay, if Madrid won't pay it then so be it.

Does he still get his loyalty bonus for this?

Tell you what, if he hasn't got the right mentality to play in goal for us, I can't wait till it goes south at Madrid. Famously very forgiving and supportive over there of course. I'm sure he's got what it takes to play for the most demanding club on the planet.

I thought he said joint decision between him and his staff, not a decision joint with De Gea.

Who knows what the hell LvG means half the time lol

There's more to football than money. I've been around football to know even if they offered some players double the money, they wouldn't sign a contract.

I think that's my point. If we're offering DDG(which we probably were) 4x times his current wage and he didn't/wouldn't sign the contract, why do we need to make him feel wanted as you said before.

This goes back to my original point: offer them a contract, if they won't sign it as you say what's the point in running it down to the situation we're in with DDG?

If they won't sign and don't want to be there then don't have them in the club.

Lol true. But he specifically named David when he spoke of joint decision which is why I understood it as such

I actually think that there is a bit of building going on here by VanGaal.

I would not be surprised if he sits down with DDG and lays it out and says listen we have always wanted you to stay and Real have turned your head but they have not shown that they really want you. "We love you I love you you shall stay" and low and behold the extension is signed.

Yes I know I'm being hopeful but I'm being optimistic here.

We dont need the money. This is not about money. Its about which is the bigger club. And we are simply that.

But there's another part of the equation you're missing, and that's Mendes. Who knows what he's doing behind the scenes.

next 2 games villa and newcastle, not giant hitters. Time some footballers took some of their own medicine, 2nd september if still here he will suddenly be a bit more focused
That's true, but I can't help but worry that a howler from Romero is going to cost us at some point, and with an all important CL qualifier coming up I just hope it won't come at the worst time possible.

But you're right, we should be strong enough to cope without De Gea inn all our matches up until september rolls around.

Going to be an intense few weeks I think. If Madrid send an actual decent offer through then I think he is gone. If they don't then he'll resume playing after the window I guess. All depends how badly Madrid think they need him for this season.
