Is tapping up not a thing anymore? They should be fined for it.

We're not going to get "the price we want" because Real know they don't have to pay a penny if they wait less than a year. He's not going to sign a contract because he doesn't want to be here because he's been tapped up (however you want to put it that's whats happened. There have been stories of "interest" from Madrid all along - and he was never unhappy before that interest began). So the two scenarios that are likely? Deadline day deal where we get a terrible price for the best young keeper in the world (I can see something like £21m); or he walks next summer for free. That would be an even bigger disaster because we'd get nothing for him AND we'll get nothing for him this year because he won't play as he won't be "focused" enough to.

What a shambles.

We really dont need the money Madrid are offering..seeing as we have hardly spent a thing this window too...He is leaving either way, I have made peace with it..the club will learn from this when it comes to new contracts, and he will perform if he stays..or he will get benched..Suarez, Modric, Scneiderlin and Ronaldo are just a few of the players that wanted to move, didnt and still played..they are professional

The Euros next summer is a big boost for us in this regard.

I agree that most top footballers are professional.
However, DDG did have a shambolic game in pre-season, where he was almost scared to make a save. Once that game happened, I think he never played for MUFC since and LVG has stated since that game, that DDG is mentally not right to playf or MUFC.
Is DDG truly a professional? I'm genuinely questioning this now.

We're not saying no to a transfer fee to bench him for a year as punishment, why do people think this? De Gea will be benched as long as the transfer window is open, once it closes he knows he'll be here for another year and that he will have to play at his best to come in contention for the NT, where he's still not a regular under del Bosque. Right now in his mind he's still hoping for a move, and that distracts a player and would also leave us in a peculiar situation if he did play but left on the last day meaning we'd have to bed in a new keeper within a week.

We're showing our muscle here and I'm fine with how the club is dealing with it, we will not be lowballed for our best player.

I'm not sure its that simple as saying "oh I'm staying right? Guess I'll actually try now". I'm sure he's trying his best right now to be as professional as he can be - but motivation is a strange beast.

LVG has repeated this many times but no one seems to want to listen, come Sept 2 , if he is still here, then he is back in contention

He overcame moving to a foreign country at a young age, suffering at the hands of the press after some early mistakes, and went on to become one of the top 3 players in his position in the world. So, yes, I'd say he is professional enough.

Playing for Spain at a major tournament is motivation enough, especially as there is actually a chance of winning things with them.

Schneiderlin, Suarez are just two examples of players who were denied a move at first, played their best season at their current club and still got their move a year later. It's not a guarantee de Gea won't be focussed, if he isn't he'll be benched but I'm sure that he wants to play if he stays this year. Every footballer does and he won't come back in straight away, he will have to fight for his place in training/under 21 matches first to convince van Gaal and Hoek.

Actually he's never said that
David de Gea could play for Manchester United again, according to Louis van Gaal, though it will not be until next month. The goalkeeper is widely expected to join Real Madrid before then, with the clubs still haggling over a fee, but if no deal is agreed Van Gaal says the player could return for United for the rest of the season.

“Of course he could,” Van Gaal said. “If he is still here on 1 September we will look again, but he cannot play before that because as a goalkeeper you need the highest concentration, and it is difficult when you are in a position like David. We saw in pre-season his focus was not quite there and we made the decision on Wednesday not to play him.”

That is from the Guardian, if you think Im possibly making this up..I rest my case, let people believe what they want to believe..

Can someone explain how when West Brom and Everton refuse to sell Berahino and Stones, respectively, they're widely lauded for their stance but when we refused to sell De Gea apparently we're a shambles and should have got it sorted out sooner (quite how we're supposed to sort it out until the transfer window closeses is anyones guess).

Maybe people are panicking that we're going to lose DDG on a free and neither West Brom or Everton have that concern?

And Stones has continued to play, Berahino played a few games. Whereas we've got one of the best keepers in the world who isn't even being considered for selection at this point. There's a difference between this and West Brom and Everton scenarios.

But mostly, it's because it's United and media love to shit on us. We've had almost as much stick as Chelsea this season while our results have been positive and Chelsea's have been anything but.

Does anyone think the reception he gets if/when he plays for us could change his mind?

I expect he'll get a huge applause. It's been reported the support he got last season nearly swayed his decision but obviously didn't. If he sees the fans still love him after everything, it might have an effect.

Not a chance imo and why he needs to see that they still love him when he knew that they love him on the first place, that did not stop him not to sign a new contract.

We simply can't let him go now, we'd be stuck with Romero as #1 or the Ajax chump. Lets just get one more good season from De Gea and get one of the German keepers next summer.

Can't believe people are turning on him. He has a right not to sign a contract, and to not put in a transfer request. It is also United's right to hold him to his contract or sell them for a price they find acceptable. No one is doing anything wrong. If LVG believes DDG is not in the right frame of mind, it is also a good stance not to play him. I doubt DDG is saying he does not want to play, or thinks he is not in the right frame of mind.

I can't believe RM will offer what United want so I hope United accept he is going for free. Getting past a few CL games after the group stages will more than make up for the loss.

Pretty sure come Wednesday, DDG will be fully focused on Euro championships and will be challenging for first 11.

I hope United hold true until Wednesday.

You're actually quite right, it's a strange situation.

United are quite within their rights to not want to sell for less than their asking price.
De Gea is quite within his rights to want to leave amicably and not force a transfer through with a request.
Real are quite within their rights to bid what they see as a sensible offer with it in mind that they can have him for free next season.

Considering how close la liga was last season and is likely to be again, having De Gea would probably make the difference. Not paying the asking price could turn out to be a poor decision by Real Madrid.

Giving in to Madrid now, and possibly lowering the price which is being reported, will make us look like complete amateurs and a small time club. We need to stand firm. If Madrid won't pay what he's worth, then they can feck off and wait to get him on a free next season. It would be worth it for us to get him for another season. He was the difference for us last year.

Will be good to finally see an end to this. Hope he fails miserably. He's been very good for us over the last two years and has been very professional in his approach to all this, but I just can't wish a player well that leaves us to join Madrid. He'll be a huge success though, Spain's number one for the next decade.

Because we're United and ABU is still very strong.

This isnt aginst you or anything but i think he might struggle at madrid.

De gea's best moments have come under times of great intensity where he can make double or treble reflex saves. It's a totally different kettle of fish IMO to have to play against the spanish teams who come up against madrid and are damn adamant to finish there one and only chance off.

Kind of agree. We are also quite forgiving here, and when DDG had his darkest moments we were supportive and very forgiving. The circus he's joining is the complete opposite. He's emotional fragile IMO and LVG knows this. Many a top player will continue to play at a high level even though they want to leave but DDG can't. If we are honest, when the speculation started again the back end of the season, so did his mistakes....

£29m is decent. It's just stupid that it dragged on for so long with no hope of a top class replacement.

What's the purpose of selling him now after we held out for so long.

Madrid finally paying up. I was all for letting him leave for free next season when the offers were in the range of £15m-£20m. But even we have to consider an offer of £30m for a goalkeeper in the final year of his contract and intent not on renewing. All we need to do now is throw all of this (and if needed, more) at Spurs for Lloris and carry on with our season.

Yeah but you think Spurs would let Lloris go?
And what if we buy Cilessen instead of Lloris?

Let's just see how it goes. Hope you're right and he gets sold back to Atletico with his tails between his legs in a couple of seasons.
