Derby County Vs Manchester United

07.01.09 | tribalfootball.com
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson hopes to give a debut to Fabio da Silva in tonight's Carling Cup semi against Derby.

Fabio, the 19-year-old twin of new first-choice right back Rafael, may get a chance tonight after missing much of the season through Injury.

Ferguson said: "I am awaiting his return with great interest because Rafael has made a tremendous impact.

"They are identical twins - I can't tell them apart, expect that one is married and wears a ring! It will be exciting to find out if their football ability is identical. There is every chance that it is because Fabio captained Brazil at each youth level."

So official.

I'm going tonight :D

Is there a good chance of Anderson starting? I'm thinking of putting a bet on him scoring.

I defended Gaz at CB.

Then he actually played there and now I would rather he not, ever again.

I think Fletcher will play because I think Carrick and Scholes will start vs Chelsea.

Fergie will probably do one of his weird 'guess the formation' teams.

Park ---- Fletcher -- Gibson -- Anderson

Well if Manucho doesn't play today then he never will.

If we have a good cushion for the home leg then he'll probably play then.

I reckon bench tonight, Home leg starter.

Does anyone know what the official squad for tonights game is? The BBC think they know but we need confirmation. This will let us know if Fabio, Manucho, etc even have a chance of being involved tonight.

Oh, so Fabio and Welbeck can start today but Manucho needs a cushion and then he might play at home? Well he must be crap.

I never said Fabio should start.

yeah it seems that way about Manucho though. I don't think Fergie has much confidence in him, which is natural since we haven't seen much of him.

Thats what I mean, if he cant start in a League Cup match against a Championship side then he never will.
Its not like he is a defender which I could understand if we didn't risk him. He is a striker its not that much of a risk!

If you could back up your suggestion with a reason, yes.

Fair enough.

Welbeck has performed much better than Manucho all season and is one of the most promising youngsters at the club.

Fabio has been absolutely superb for our reserves and there's every chance he can take to first-team football as quickly as his bro.

Manucho has been very hit and miss for our reserves, is clearly taking a while to adapt and is behind both Welbeck and Tevez (who got 4 goals in the last round and is un-droppable) in the pecking order up front.

All of which means that Fabio and Welbeck and Fabio have a good shout of a game tonight but Manucho will only feature from the bench, if at all.

Now it's your turn to give a reason. How does any of the above mean that Manucho is "crap" or that if he doesn't play tonight he "never will"?

Thats what I mean, if he cant start in a League Cup match against a Championship side then he never will.

I don't know why anyone expected him to play much this season anyway. He's effectively our 5th choice striker and even then I think even then Fergie would rather play Giggs as a second striker than play Manucho. Not really sure what's going on there.

I'd be happy to see him come on if we're comfortable tonight, I don't want him starting because I have no clue about his ability, apart from a few clips from the AFCON and a cameo appearance against Stoke where he kind of ran around a bit, he could be completely unsuited to our game for all we know.

However I'm happy to see him come on if we're cruising in either leg so we can get a proper look at him.

I know they're twins but come on :smirk:

Indeed. Certainly after the Blackburn game. That's just how i see us lining up though, not what i would pick myself.

It's too much of a risk playing Vida with Rio injured and the Chelsea game at the weekend so its either stick O'Shea in the middle with Evans and find someone to play at LB but i'd rather we didn't do that because i want O'Shea to continue playing LB so he's in good form there for the Chelsea game.

Evra will be back for the Chelsea game, his suspension is now up. The man is back
I think tonight we could see the twins at RB & LB with Nev and Evans in the centre.

Quality.

I hadn't realised this! :D:D:D:D:D

In which case stick Sheasy in the middle with Evans and Goggs at LB and go all out attack on their asses

You suggested "hasn't got a fecking clue" be my tag line based on these two quotes:

Well if Manucho doesn't play today then he never will.

and
Oh, so Fabio and Welbeck can start today but Manucho needs a cushion and then he might play at home? Well he must be crap.

Carling Cup games are considered ideal matches to test unproven players lacking match fitness like Manucho specialy when they are against Championship sides.

Playing a striker isnt considered a risk when you know you have the second leg at home to make up if your team cant score.
What is important is not to concede.(Fabio)

Yes Welbeck has performed much better than Manucho all season and is one of the most promising youngsters at the club, so we dont have to find out if he is any good do we?

And yes Fabio has been absolutely superb for our reserves and there's every chance he can take to first-team football as quickly as his bro. But one doesn't risk playing an unproven defender at an away game it is much safer to play him at home on the second leg were there is less of a risk.

Don't take it too seriously.

Welbeck's earned his right to a game. Manucho hasn't. Simple really. Try telling Welbeck he has to sit the game out because we somehow need to use this game to work out if Manucho is any good.

The "haven't got a fecking clue" bit comes in when you hysterically tried to claim that Manucho not playing tonight was somehow the end of his United career.

Not sure if Fabio will start to be honest. I agree it's a bit of a risk. Of course, whether or not Fabio starts has naff all to do with whether Manucho is crap or not.

Thats a bit of an exaggeration.

According to the beeb Fabio isn't included in the squad.

That could well be the one, I reckon. Enough changes to mix things up from Southampton, plenty getting an opportunity, players like Neville and Nani getting much needed back-to-back starts and still with one eye on the Chelsea game at the weekend.

Did you close your eyes and just pick positions

Manucho on the wing, Fletcher as a DM, Giggs is too far over right. Plus it's Goggs anyway.

Anderson Luís de Abreu Oliveira will score tonight. Blistering run from midfield and a one-two with Carlitos...into the box, bang...goodnight Vienna!
